Devil Hunter follows the life of Solian Aventa, a demon slayer. After being betrayed by his woman, and those close to him, he leaves his home land to the northern country of Vivica, where a dark omen looms over head.

This week is going back even further now. I can still remember the earlier versions of this game being showcased in the screenshot topic at Gaming World. The main character Solian was an edited Final Fantasy IV Cecil Dark Knight. This people is a game that was using Rudra before anyone else.. Even predates Balmung Cycle, although admittedly that game made those resources popular, and now we have the pinnacle of Rudra, Forever's End!

There is one reason why I love this game. No it's not because it has an amazing story, not it's custom systems, not the fact that it's actually completed to the length of around 6-8 hours give or take. Nope, it's the fact that this game truly feels like the perfect example of a typical Rpg Maker 2003 game. It doesn't try to be anything but that. The story is nicely paced and entertaining, characters although bland do their roles well. Music is placed in the right areas and the battles aren't too dull.

When you decided to create an rpg in Rm2k3 from now on, try comparing it to this game. If you're game is doing better then anything in this game, that means you're doing something right! I hope you guys all take a look at this game and continue to check in on Looking Back!

Next Time: The Legend of the Philosopher's Stone. In other words, the custom systems game that actually came out!

(One of the original "Good" fan games)

A demo of a fangame. It pretty much epitomizes everything I liked about the FF series and adds my own quasi-historical bend to it, as well as custom graphics for the character sets. The style is fairly unique I think, the settings memorable and the characters have layers of depth. ~ Blitzen

Having "Final Fantasy" in the title of a game doesn't resonate well with many, but I feel Final Fantasy Empires is a true anomaly. Check it out. ~ Dragonheartman

Then Blitzen appears and grants us our wish haha. I'm hoping Lys will appear when I do A Blurred Line Looking Back. That guy can just sense it when something about his game comes up.
I wish Final Fantasy Empires was finished.
i actually think the simplicity of devil hunter's story is what some people should go for. there are a lot of games that try to be really twisty and over complicated with flash backs, plot twists, super important political dialogue, all at the very beggining as if the story has super duper meaning behind it when there's not enough pacing or growth for anyone to really care. i wouldn't mind seeing more devil hunter-type games.
Devil Hunter is by far my favorite rm2k3 game. It was the first rpg maker game I played and loved it to the end. The reason why I got into RPG making in the first place. It's so nice to see it featured on here.
Oh man Final Fantasy Empires. I remember absolutely LOVING that game and wishing the Final Fantasy fangame I had in my head could look half as good. ... yes FF5 style sprites are good to me, shush. :P

And for some reason, I keep confusing Devil Hunter with Demon's Legacy. Might be the palette of the main character in both...

I've secretly always wanted to make a prequel to Devil Hunter.
