Description

Welcome to the seventh installment of the beloved community puzzle game: Befuddle Quest: Advent Children. The advanced engine RPG Maker VX Ace will be the tool of our choice.

OBJECTIVE ::..

The Children of Befuddlement will make a single-map puzzle using RTP OR your own supplied graphics (that mesh with RTP). The prefect kentona will then link the maps into a single project.

For younger children unfamiliar with the Befuddle Quest event, please read the past mission logs, starting here: http://rpgmaker.net/games/1101/

SCHEDULE ::..
Start Date: 07APR2015
Submission Deadline: 30APR2015 @ 00:00 HRS
Projected Release Date: 18SEP2015

STORY ::..
Ten years after Zack saved the world from an alien invasion, the Zachariah family has traveled to the magical country of Landover for a well deserved vacation! Zack, his lovely wife Broomhilda, spunky boy Hans, and headstrong girl Isolde are staying at a rustic old castle named the Sterling Spire, in the care of the old man Hob Roberts.

But while on tour of the ancient place, the clumsy oaf accidently tipped over the dangerous Tangle Box! Suddenly, Zack and Broomhilda are sucked into the magical prison box while simultaneously a devious imp named Orzwelp is released! Cackling with glee, Orzwelp sprints away into the danky old castle.

Now the children Hans and Isolde must solve the riddles of the Sterling Spire before the Tangle Box syphons the life energy of their parents and frees Orzwelp completely and unleashes his terror on Landover! Zack and Broomhilda, meanwhile, must survive in the magical confines of the Tangle Box long enough for their children to break them free...

RULES ::..
  • You must use RMVXAce
  • You can submit as many puzzles as you like
  • Each submission must use only 1 map
  • No Direct designation Transfer Player events - use Designation with variables*
  • No battles or common events or items or pretty much most of the Database
  • No instant Game Overs (restart the puzzle instead)
  • If you aren't using the standard RTP, INCLUDE YOUR RESOURCES

*The default teleport events use the map ID of the project you create the event in, however, since I will be combining various maps from various projects, you will not know beforehand what your map ID will be, and teleport events will break. To get around this, in an autostart event, record the current Map ID in a variable, and then reference that variable when using Transfer Player. It is a little more tedious, but it ensures that your teleport events will work properly.

NOTES ::..
  • The hero's name is Zack (a legacy of RM2k3). The sprite used will be the same as "Rick" from the default heroes in RMVXAce
  • The hero's wife's name is Broomhilda. The sprite used will be the same as "Isabelle" from the default heroes in RMVXAce
  • The hero's eldest boy's name is Hans and is 10 years old. The sprite used will be the boy in the upper left of People1 in RMVXAce
  • The hero's youngest girl's name is Isolde and is 7 years old. The sprite used will be the girl in the upper left of People1 (right next to the boy) in RMVXAce
  • The old caretaker's name is Hob Roberts. The sprite used will be the old bald man in the lower right of People1 in RMVXAce
  • The imp's name is Orzwelp. The sprite used will be the pig man in Monster1 in RMVXAce
  • Feel free to invent story for your puzzle. I will work it into the storyline.
  • You can use any one of the Zachariah characters for puzzles (or pairs - the two parents or the two kids - if that's what you want). Hob Roberts is pretty useless, but you can include him, too.
  • Within the Tangle Box is a magical dimension, where anything can happen!
  • Sterling Spire is an old musty castle, with many nooks, crannies, and winding halls.

SUBMISSIONS ::..
Before the submission deadline, zip or rar up your project, and submit it to the event using the commands in the upper right. Make as many puzzles as you like. Multiple submissions are allowed.

Please include with your submission:
  • The RMVXAce project
  • All non-RTP resources used
  • The coordinates of the ENTRANCE and EXIT points on the map, so that I can link it properly
  • Puzzle name
  • A brief description of the puzzle
  • A detailed walkthrough (in a PM, or a text file in the submission folder)
  • Puzzle difficulty (out of 5)
  • Any explicit instructions, special notes or issues you think I need to know to link the map into the game

Set up the characters in the database as so

so when I import it all together it would be easier!

I will be copying the map from your project to the "master" project. If there is anything else that needs to be copied over, like resources or scripts or terrains or whatnot, you have to let me know.

Go forth children and create!

I have never tried doing a transfer with variable before and I'm having some issues with it. I have taken screen shots of what I have attempted to do to make this work.

The first event is a p process recording the map id.
The second event is me trying to transfer to a certain set of coordinates
in the same map. (My puzzle will have lots of transfers so this is important to figure out.)
The third picture shows where I end up on the map.

Ah. You need to set Variables 2 and 3 to 49 and 10 respectively. What you're doing is naming the variables "49" and "10" but their values are both 0.

You need to use "Control Variables" to change their values. I'll attach screenshots.

Thanks, I feel like a moron for not thinking of that.
What are the odds that Hob Roberts will end up being the villain all along, I wonder? :P

Anyway, I've been playing lots of Zelda 1 lately...

I think you are making a pretty big assumption that I thought that far ahead.

I was thinking more along the lines that someone would add that bit as a part of their own puzzle's story as a twist, but yeah. Also, I'm assuming it's okay to temporarily change one or more of the party members' sprites within our own puzzle?

certainly! I plan on to.
I feel like Orzwelp was a particularly inspired name.
I only just realised what that was about 20 or so minutes ago. >.<;
How goes the befuddling?

I think I am going to resort to a minigame, because I have one floating in the back of my mind for years now and this is a good opportunity to implement it.

It's too bad that the hardest assignment of my whole life had to pop up at this time. It stinks. But I am pretty sure I will still finish something! It won't be absolutely groundbreaking but it'll be something. I simply can't miss out on this.

Pretty much finished my first puzzle and will start working on my second puzzle sometime soon! :D

It's a bit of a bother having to figure out how exactly VX Ace differs from RPG Maker 2003, but I'll manage.
Finished my first puzzle and its fairly bad but I will submit it anyway though hopefully since this is the last week of class I will be able to create something of actual quality by the end of this thing.

Seems interesting.

I would give it a try, but may I use the boat vehicle for my puzzle ?

EDIT: Nevermind, I submitted my puzzle. If there's any problem on it, tell me !

So guys, is there a way to make the automatic "shadows" appear above the "C" tiles when mapping?

Maybe a key combination? :/

As far as I know there isn't. You might be able to edit your own shadow tile if that makes it easier.
