Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

Oh GODS. This is a huge wall. My apologies for any eye damage you get because of this wall of text. XD

IoL, though I'm afraid I kinda rage-quit that one after the plant boss... well, I'm going to have to nerf that one.

Yeah, I don't blame you. I was kinda expecting that to happen. Unless you're able to figure out the boss' gimmick really quick and start pushing hard from the get go, it's insane.

Until recently I hated this guy most of all, matter of fact.

For the record, I really feel bad about having to nerf some of these games to get past the bosses and beat them. It feels really bad to have to do so and I wince every time I do it, because I know that it's terrible, but for an LJ I can't justify either cutting out whole battles (because there might be lessons in there somewhere), nor having 12 episodes of me trying to get lucky enough to get past a boss. Which is why I edited only superficial things like percentage of hits and the stats a little more evenly.

Hey, I don't mind anymore. I mean, you need to get though the game to judge it, right? You have my Royal Permission to haxx the game as much as you need to to get to the end, alright?

Even using skills and abusing them I seem to be getting slaughtered and I really think that even on easy mode the bosses would be too hard. Especially one that is made up of three plants that all damage, protect each other, stun, deal huge damage, poison, revives the one that's killed, ups defence, heals all the damage you do in one turn and deals full-party attacks.

It's just too much all at once, especially when you're stuck with just 6 attacks each character and some don't do any damage. I mean, what good is the one that lowers enemy evasion? And if you get constantly stunned so that you die before you can use Wilders' special combo...

Yeah, maybe I hit the player with too much at once there with little warm up. There ARE ways of dealing with every single thing he does to the point where you can take him out with all level 2 with starting gear only needing to revive one person...But there just isn't that much leeway if you goof something up.

It doesn't help that VX Ace's battle text scrolls by REALLY fast, and enemies don't do their little pre-attack animations from XP anymore (which would have been useful for showing when a skill counts as magic/mouth usage), so some important stuff can be easily missed. I've since gone back and made the Cover thing a LOT more explicit, though. I've gotten a LOT of complaints about it already. x_x

Depending on how much time and remaining resources I have, I'm also planning on adding optional bosses that will more slowly introduce stuff to the player so they aren't massacred by Singing Green and his giant wall of gimmicks.

Oh and the skill that lowers evasion is there just to do a little something more than a normal attack (basic skills are usually better than normal attacks). It's not always useful, but I tend to prefer it over obfuscate. Enemies when I play have this odd tendency to evade my attacks anytime I REALLY need them to hit. >_>

Yeah, there's just a little bit too much and no leeway for doing the wrong attack or just plain bad luck. You can say I'm bitching but I guess I expect a little more lenience in accidentally doing something wrong. Even on hard mode. Oh god, Rhyme's game is gonna slaughter me, isn't it? >.<;

As I said, you're judging, you have limited time and videos, etc. So I don't mind the hacking now that I realize you have good reason to.

And yeah, I don't know if you're the intended audience for that difficulty at all. It's more intended for people who REALLY want a challenge and find most RPGs to be too easy. I have a few friends like that, and they enjoyed the game, minus a few problems that I'm rectifying (or have already).

That said, I'm planning on renaming and re-balancing the other difficulties to make them more JRPG and less Puzzles-of-death. Not everyone is looking for that level of hard.

I don't remember being told I could regen it in DD or IoL, but I might have been distracted at the time (or accidentally pressed the button). Perhaps highlighting it if it were mentioned would be a neat idea, so it stands out in text? (There's a lot of information text in DD)

I mentioned it VERY briefly. I'm not surprised you missed it. It also doesn't help that by default, VXAce only displays TP cost or MP cost, and not both if the skill uses both. Once I have the full version, that's the first script I'm putting in, right form the get-go. There's no excuse for that not being in the default engine.

Also, I was playing Illusions of Loyalty earlier today just for fun and giggles and OMG I got a Spellblade sword or something! I could have swore this game didn't have any item drops. Or at least I never got anything cool that I would have noticed. And now that I have already beaten the game, I get a better sword than the one I had before... Such is my luck. xP

Yeah...I basically threw a few dropped items in at the last dungeon at the last second. I think I left the drop rate a little too low for them, even if the new sword IS pretty damn good.

I've since gone back and given everyone proper drops now.
It probably doesn't help that I'm playing the contest only versions of the games - that meaning that as soon as the deadline was past I downloaded each game. I'm a stickler for that, though I do allow patches for things like if the game is broken due to missing files or one-line event fixes... or really slow music. >.< (FYI, keep it upbeat next time, oki?~)

I imagine a lot of those watching the vids are rolling their eyes and thinking "Geez, I already fixed that. No need to point it out a thousand times. Gawd."
XD

Oh, and please don't take my rage quit in the next video hard. It was just really frustrating at the time that I'd gotten Singing Bitch down a lot of health only to have it heal it all, then finally defeated one of it's friends... only to have them revived. >.<;
I was under the impression that I wasn't allowed to make any updates once the judging started. I'm sitting on a huge load of fixes, waiting until it's legal to make a full update again.

Oh and I replaced the main combat music. Found something much better.
XD

I usually only take game fixers (as in, fixing a game that dies straight out whether it be a broken event or missing files. Think Rew house, though we never did get a fix for it :/ ) and only during the first few hours after. Sometimes it's hard to catch all the bugs on a deadline and I know that people do tend to update their entries during the time when waiting for the other judges to download - timezones and such make it hard for everyone to get the exact same copy but we do try.

Hence why I allowed that quick fix for the random encounters you added~ Dun worry, if I can get past this plant boss... >.<;

Oh by the way, just so you know, if you've gotten the main plant trying to do the revival song, you've just tipped the scales and victory is in reach. Lock it down, and the win is yours.

Actually, I'm fighting the guy right now and my gosh...0_o Either I somehow unbalanced things recently with my fixes and stuff and didn't realize it, or I wasn't fighting the guy properly before. I'm absolutely murdering the !@#$er at level 5. Yeah, yeah, I have the best armor you can buy, but still...I think it's TOO easy for hard mode now...

I'll need someone else to test my new balancing before the next update... >_>
Maybe I'm just too close to the project now...

Edit: Yeah, something's not right. I didn't even need a single item. No one hit critical HP even once. I pretty much got by with defensive orders and the occasional medicinal herbs to cure poison... 0_o I need another tester to make sure it's not just me knowing my own game so well that I can utterly wreck it.

I mean, seriously, I added all these cool new buff items and stuff, and I haven't even thought of touching them yet...XD
(Except I got stunned and died. By the time I got him down to reviving he had full health (500+ heal) and I had two characters down. :< )

Also, keep in mind that you know all the kinks. You're supposed to be able to murder the fuckers: you made them, you know their patterns. We players don't so multiply the difficulty by 5 and you have the boss we're facing - as you'll see with the current video which has been uploaded.

You know, after seeing you fight that thing, I think I can see why you had such a hard time...

I think I'm going to put an NPC or something somewhere to give a hint. Because I guess the magic bullet for this fight that makes things a lot easier isn't as obvious as I thought it was. >_> Yeah, I'll put a hint.

@Liberty: You're almost there.
Ahahah just watched your LJ on Kampong, I was Rofling when you 'predicted' the left door ending just before it happened xD
Almost done, keep it up =D (nervous thinking soon it's my turn to be judged 0.0)
Hello Liberty :D
First of all, thank you for playing the game, your opinion is always good to hear :p.
Sooooo... About the game, the grammar has some mistakes because I'm from Portugal.
I think I'm just a little rusty on the writing haha
I also wanted to implement a guard around the town, but I did teh game in 3 days so...
Not to give any excuses, I'm new to VX ace but well, in 3 days I tried the best I could :p
The piano bug, I don't know what happened, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. In general I agree with you and it was sooo cool when you guessed the ending haha!
I thought about doing a remake in the full version of VX Ace, maybe some other time.
The history was simple but also Silent Hill'ish :p. But thank you for that, I was expecting you to play it for some time now.

Started playing Subterranian Starfield.

Huh. Reminds me of Etrian Odyssey. Freakin' love that series, even though it takes me a year per game. XD The little pictures that pop up when you enter each new screen is a really nifty effect. I like.

Of course, I hopped onto Sadist mode, thinking "Can't be THAT much harder than my game...can it?".

:P I expect I'll be regretting that decision eventually. So far, though, it's not that bad. *expects that the developer is laughing, waiting for my sweet tears of frustration.*
BTW, thanks for let's playing Kampong. I couldn't get through more than 5 minutes, because I am Le Chicken. XD

I also had the exact same thought process as you at the ending. It was uncanny. XD
Played a bit more of Starfield before going to bed...
Archeia_Nessiah, Rhyme...YOU PEOPLE ARE CRUEL. Far crueler than me! :o

Also...Dat first boss...DAT FIRST BOSS...0_0 I have one VERY strong word to describe my feelings towards it. ".......Meep! ._."

I made a pretty controversial first choice of equipment, but honestly, I think that thing is worth it. Really saves the pain if I'm poisoned and wanna walk it off.

They don't understand us Aegix! (Or maybe it's because they do that they made us suffer like this xD)

When one of my party members died and I was thinking 'ok I just need to get a res item or some--whaaatt?? where'd he go??' xD

I played with a serious feeling of guilt throughout the rest of the game XD, I believe I even started all over again once because of it xD

(I really enjoyed it though gj guys ^^)
I'm considering restarting starfield on normal. I don't feel like grinding a ton, and I can't seem to find a way around the first boss's poisoning...*shrug* I'll see.

Also, after talking with a friend and trying out my plant boss again while avoiding doing some of the things that make it easier (and dying really quick and painfully)...

I think I know what I'll do. Renaming the modes for one thing, adding in game boss hints on easy and normal, and making some of the gimmicks softer for the non-hard modes. Oh, and making those EXP charms also boost your stats by a lot. But hard mode is staying as is. I'm just gonna give the player proper warnings that it'll eat their babies if they're not hardcore.
