Description

Some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community.

Release Something! Days used to be a regularly occurring events back when the community had a problem with releasing stuff. It was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something.

It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

WHATTA RELEASING?
Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D).

GOTTA HAVE RULES
- To 'Release Something' just upload it straight to this event page. Sign in/up, then hit 'Submit' in the top right corner of the page and browse until you find the file you want to 'Release'. Voila~
- You can release more than one thing, but try to make sure it's something you've been working on at least recently (say, in the last month or so). Keep it relevant!
- Release all through the weekend.
- DO NOT steal the things you see here, if someone wants feedback on a resource or script. I doubt we have to say it, but it's worth saying just in case someone uses the 'but you never said...' shit to justify being a fuckwit.
- To give feedback, use @username and then hide tags (depending on length and amount of feedbacks in post. So, for example:

@Liberty
[hide]this page is pretty awesome but hey, I think you need to work on your logo making abilities because holy shit giiiiirl[/hide]

GOTTA GET GOODIES
There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. One per person.
Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts most!

Just to re-iterate: You are releasing something :ANYTHING: that you have done on your project over the last month or two. It can be a screenshot, a face image, planned dialogue, a script snippit, a resource, a demo (if you have one on hand) or a video of a system or anything like that. It does not have to be something that you whip up over this weekend - in fact, it's HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you NOT do that! Just dump something in! Or a few somethings!

@LorSquirrel-Feedback Response
Yes, it has to do with the story, and thank you very much.

Right. With this, that should cover everyone who submitted something. To give your poor scrolling fingers a rest, I'm just gonna link to my past feedback posts:

@pianotm:
Holy crap dude these sound awesome! The first three tracks kinda sound the same due to the same tempo and constant cymbol keeping the beat. What program do you use? I've always wanted to dive back into music composition, but I'm not sure where best to start.

@Zephire98:
Yep. That's a characterset. Did you spite that yourself? If so, well done!

@karins_soulkeeper:

That's a really nifty script! It works just fine with the default menu, but I wonder how well it would synergize with common menu systems like Yanfly's? Either way, this is pretty cool!

@Zeig:
Well... that was a thing. Of all the things I thought I was going to give feedback on, this was not one of them. I cleared about six levels before I beat a box and there was no clear state, so I'm gonna assume that's the end. I'm honestly not sure what to even give talk about. I can draw a few conclusions to the title and the content, but... yeah.

Why did you choose this maker of out all the other ones out there? I don't like what was put in the readme file about planting folders on my hard drive without me knowing, but I go to my Temp folder and there's no folder , but there's no AckGame folder. So now I'm gonna have to do a search to find out where it is.

@dinkledaberry:
This looks interesting! I'm liking how the theme for battles is arresting them instead of defeating them. That's got some real potential! Is this the Old School Modern resource pack? The colors looks pretty familiar. If so, then do they have facesets? Because the generator facesets look pretty out of place when viewed next to the tiles.

@AubreyTheBard:
Since you're doing stuff way beyond my field, can I ask why you decided to stick with 2k3 and such a (from my POV) complex method of coding for an RM game? Why not move up to Ace, MV or even XP?

@Frogge:
I'll admit I had a bit of a hard time following your concept. It's tic tac toe with some added competitive mechanics, right? Well, there's no harm in such a game, so if you have the time, I say go for it.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at for these last two image. I think the third image is powerups for the tic tac toe game. Is the second image map layouts for another game?

@Donut:
This would be a lot easier to talk about if I knew what exactly you were testing. As it is, this looks like a comprehensive style clash demonstration, to be honest. The backgrounds don't fit at all with anything else going on in the gif, there's a pokemon that talks to another thing but it turns out to be humans, and then there's a 1st person dungeon crawling segment. What is going on in this gif?

@CYBERLOUS:
I'm liking what you got here. The character art is pretty cute, and the music has a very distinct sci-fi feel to it. I like them! My only real concern is the screenshot you posted. The white tiles need to be darkened, because the character's shirt blends in perfectly with the ground, and you really don't want that.

@Aces:
I really like what your custom art does to give the game a more unique look. But then I see screens like the Stealth System one or the faceset generator and wonder how badly those graphics are going to clash. Are these all in the same game? I know that art is a time consuming process, but I'd recommend drawing images of story-vital characters and remove the faceset generated ones, as that's gonna look really bad together.

@BerryRMN:
Cooking with the devil, huh? I can get behind that. Is this supposed to be a public cooking show? The layout itself doesn't seem like anything I've seen in a home. Make sure you shift click the carpets so that they don't look like a T in that third pic, though.

@pooperflooper:
I have yet to perfect the art of making chairs pushed up into a table look natural. So, assuming there's no graphical bugs when you walk near them, kudos to you for pulling it off! I'm really liking the black and white tint you've got going on here, and I'm interested in seeing where you go with it. Check the outlines on some objects though, since some tiles, like the fridge have a much more solid outline than others do, and you want to be consistent. I would know this since I have that same issue myself.

@Punkitt:
Woah. That looks really cool! I like the minimalist aspect you've got going on here. The only thing I recommend is checking the shadows on some of the geometry, as the shadows for those objects feel like they should be longer than they are, like in the Better Weird Geometry pic. Good job with eveything else, though. I'm not sure how to feel about that thing standing in the water wanting to fit in. It makes me feel nervous!

@Thunder176:
I'd use some other tiles on either side of the altar for image 3, as that's not what ceiling tiles are used for. If you're going to have characters swim like in image 4, I'd definitely take the time to make a characterset for swimming.

@kr0x:

Trippy. Those characters look like they belong in a horror game, so I hope that's what you're going for. The first set looks a bit too much like Slenderman to not draw some unfair comparisons, so I'd add a little more detail to him to make him stand out more. That last one, on the other hand, looks like the polar opposite! Is this for the same project? Either way, I like the cartoony look to them, but it is a bit of an eyestrain to look at. Maybe lower the saturation a bit so it's not a haymaker of color to the eyes?

And it's done. That's feedback for everyone who submitted something for this event. Thanks to everyone showing off their WIPs for this event! It was awesome seeing all these, and I can't wait for the next one!!!
@Kylaila: You sure you got everyone? I don't think I saw your feedback for UPRC, J-Man or me :(

And thanks to those who provided feedback to my submission! I will reply to feedback that I've missed in this post later :)

@Red_Nova Thank you! I always love getting a reaction like that. I worry, because I hear all the problems my music has and think everybody's going to hear them. Actually, I'm using a free program right now called MuseScore. I've been ultimately preferring it because of how much it reminds me of Cakewalk. It has a few annoying things it does, though, still it's the best freeware available.
@eplipswich I very certainly did. I was talking about the project you are on mainly on terms of stery design and the many possibilities it opens - and that it irks me that it can be a very mixed message.

UPRC was rather pretty and straightforward in their locations. I really liked the vines on rocks, and the many races present. solid mapping, but really not a trailer to further comment on, just .. mapping.

.. I must've missed something compiling them o.O or worse deleted something I wrote down?!
J-man answered me. I was talking about how it's a mix of cheesy lovely jrpg tropes and a few twists here and there. plus that the green-haired girl stands out due to missing outline of sprite and different portrait style ...

it's night now, tho, I really feel tired.

EDIT: Found it. Missed it compiling it seems, all three in one post.
Added at the bottom of my compilation. Sorry about that!

Best Free music program? Will have to check this out. I use LMMS and nothing has come close to that yet, though it has a couple severe flaws. ):

And I've never heard of LMMS, so now I'll have to check that out.
Man, I'll be so glad to see this event over and done with, no longer flooding my Notifications list into oblivion.

Meanwhile, thank you InfectionFiles, luiishu535, Kylaila, and Liberty. You guys/gals helped me make a few corrections :)
And Addit, I'm figuring early-2017. Gotta be honest with myself. It's a long game.

@Red_Nova, The screenshots were taken from development build, so there a few things to take care. My artist is working on the face sets (although slower than me programming).
@Kylaila, About Age Of Knights, I was messing around with VX Ace Lite (before I got the full version) so a lot of things were messy. I may re-work it on the full version (once I finish Immortal Sins). About the guns in medieval, technically speaking, it takes elements from post Byzantine medieval times to 1821 (where muskets were developed. Although I need to find better fitting sound effects for these.

Thank you for your feedback.

Okay, I see the thing. LMMS is a mixer. I need a controller and I don't have one. I use MuseScore specifically because it's a notation program.
Okay, before this place closes its shop, my replies to feedback:

@Red_Nova:
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I think just "Kindergarten" might sound better, and I'll look to improve the quality of the translation as well. Still improving my translation every day :)

@Kylaila:
Wow, I'm amazed just how much you've thought about based only on that video! Thanks for those thoughts! Yeah, you definitely have an inkling of what this game is about, and I would love to hear your thoughts about the whole story if you ever get to play and finish the game! Glad that you have a good first impression of this game!

Okay, so once again, thanks to everyone who provided feedback to my submission! The feedback has certainly been helpful, and I have already made some adjustments to further improve the quality :)

Alloe me to answer some of that with some content from a blog post from the previous volume:
Another thing is that im interested in playing with MANY engines, not just the common stuff you see around here (RM, SMBX, Unity3D, ect). Some engines though can be... a pain to work with however. I don't wish to be thought of as a quitter (unless the engine outright sucks to the point of being unusable, or is just unusable to begin with). If an Engine is lame or just crap but something I can still work with, it's a safe bet that it will be used to make a volume of Zeigfried's Depression, and I know there's no shortage of miserable things in my head to slip in.

I would also like to note that while I will be making a slightly revised version of the game so it can meet standards a bit better, its a safe bet that I'll be moving on from volume 2 after that, and also that I don't expect people to playthrough more than once. When I get around to getting a gamepage up, what volume 2 is about will be better explained.

I honestly don't know what you mean by controller haha. LMMS has soundfont support + an alright piani roll so I'm good to go off just by that. I just wish you could export songs without it ruining the quality. (I can go past that by recording it on audacity)
And... done!

Congratulations, all who took part, and great job to all those who gave feedback! It's always appreciated and helping each other out with our projects is an awesome thing to do, even when there isn't an event for it.

Thank you everyone for making this RS! a huge success!

I'll be handing out the badges in the next day or two.

Yay! Time to celebrate! Drinks are on me!
Ooh, this just went by so fast! Next time we do this, I'll try to join earlier so that it's easier to keep up with giving other entrants feedback.

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback! I got a really good idea of what I need to improve of what I have and I'll keep working on it! Maybe I'll release a gamepage when I finish with Bound.
Hehe... I like how my entry was *the* main obstacle for people without vxa from getting the last badge >:3

@Kylaila> Database? A-Anyway, thanks!

@Red_Nova> Well... so long as the help window is on the top of the layout (and the other windows' Y-values are based on its height), the script *should* work out as intended.

Speaking of that, do you mind if I use this script i my project?
If you don't mind it being terribly limited, then go ahead!

Since you're doing stuff way beyond my field, can I ask why you decided to stick with 2k3 and such a (from my POV) complex method of coding for an RM game? Why not move up to Ace, MV or even XP?

Wonderful question! :D The main reason has simply been the amount of stuff I would have to redo if I were to try and port my project to a different maker. Systems would have to be rewritten in Ruby script, sprites would have to be redrawn (and since I'm not much of an artist, the lower resolution of 2K3 actually is a good thing for me in a way), etc. Believe me, I've seriously considered it several times, especially when I ran into technical hurdles of 2K3 that seemed at first insurmountable. I also like the side-view battle system of 2K3, and the fact that the newer makers don't allow variable referencing ANNOYS ME GREATLY! I guess they sorta don't need it since most of the devs proficient enough to need that level of technique would resort to Ruby scripting which is all-around more powerful, but again, I didn't want to have to reinvent all my systems.

Since discovering DynRPG, though, I've had a second big reason: 2K3 with DynRPG is more powerful than any other maker. Even with Ruby scripting, the other makers have limitations. A C++ program, however, is essentially only limited by what the system it's running on is capable of. With DynRPG, you can write plugins to enable file reading and writing, 3D rendering, even network and Internet communications. You could, in theory, create an MMORPG that runs in 2K3 using DynRPG. Not something I'm going to attempt, but it illustrates the potential. ;) I'm pretty sure that DynRPG plugins also run faster than equivalent scripted systems in the newer makers would, too.

You might also wonder why I don't just make the whole game from scratch in C++ if I'm proficient enough to do this much. Well, possibly I could, but there are a lot of things I'd still have to study up on, and it would be a ton of work. It's amazing how much work goes into such simple things as tile-based movement, input management, game save/loads, animations, menu systems, controlling game flow between different modes, etc. etc. etc. DynRPG allows me to use 2K3 as a front-end for the parts that it does well for the needs of my game, and create whatever background systems I want to handle the rest.

Sorry for spamming up the thread, but it felt good to explain that to somebody. X)
