So who's up for this

I was thinking about this sites closure and decided that the most important thing about RMN for me was how it consistently got me up off my ass to actually make and release games. Whether for Action 52 or Shinan's contest or the various seasonal gamemaking contests I pretty consistently had a blast in trying to put together and release something under a deadline while also seeing what the other cool_dudes taking part would come up with. I think even beyond forumchats and recieving crits etc this kind of activity was what attracted me most to the site and was actually what made me join in the first place! And I thought it would be a fitting farewell kinda to use the forums closure as yet another excuse to hunker down and be productive.

So yeah if anyone is interested the aim is to release a full game before the forum implodes. This gives you a month!! to get something out. so you have until april 2.

If anyone's interested in judging what gets released etc then we can make an actual contest out of this sucker. It's not an official contest or whatever. You can use any engine or materials etc so 'go ape' as they say.

Themes are optional but in case you need one I would suggest: RAD DOGS

remember: "forums are temporary... finished games are forever" - dark_nietzsche_666

The Site Isn't Closing Down
...however the the sentiment of completing games is a good one. Working against a deadline with other chaps in a "last gasp" game drive whilst sharing crits and encouragement is something worth doing, I believe.

So I am making an official event out of this sucker.

Rules
* Complete a game by April 2nd 16th
* Use a gameprofile download as your entry
* It doesn't have to be a new game - you can take one of your existing projects and finish it off

Theme
* RAD DOGS
* Theme is optional

Minutiae
* We don't have judges or a contest or anything, but if you want to be a judge let me know and I can add you!
* Participants who submit a completed game will get a nifty Rad Dog achievement (makerscore!!)

Just uploaded a video with some progress. Been doing some mapping and lots of graphics. I think I'll sprite Yagami and do the eventing for the battle next. I can everyone fight him and still have my awesome scene.

Guess it's time to finish my crap up Xp
So, we have just less than 3 weeks left to go before the game drive is over. I think it is time for a spotcheck! There's a few things I think we should cover: what did you start with, where are you now and where do you hope to be by Friday?

1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
2. Progress report
3. Set your goals for this week

Feel free to post screenshots or link to your gameprofile. (If you do have enough to report, you could even make a blog post :o )

For me...
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
I started Generica: The Next Generation back in late 2009, and I intended it to be another short project that I'd finish in, oh, about 2-3 months. That didn't happen. I did build a framework for it, plotted out the story and created the database, but I just didn't sit down and finish!

2. Progress report
I was about 1/3rd done the project (in terms of plot progression) when I started the game drive. I have managed to push through the wall that was holding me back (mapping the tree levels - very tedious).

3. Set your goals for this week
I plan on finishing up the middle third of the game, so that by end of the week I will be 2/3rds done.
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
Started the project from scratch for this event, so it simply didn't exist before the event.

2. Progress report
basically, I've gone from nothing to this:

a functional side scroller shooter with one complete level until now. Though functional it could still use help in form of testing

3. Set your goals for this week
Goal for the week would have to be to finish level 2. If I can keep up the pace, despite all the other non rm related stuff I have to do, it'll have 4 levels by the end
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
I had the idea of translating the game, but I had barely started it. Well, the game was ready anyway.

2. Progress report
It's finished, I only need testing right now.

3. Set your goals for this week
Release the final download. :D
1. i didnt have a project until this got rebooted

2. i wrote a physics script that can make a dog accelerate and take off like a tiny plane and am disproportionately pumped about this. also learned lots of unity stuff.

3. add more dogphysick
also i can make the dog urinate via particle systems when you hold a button down. this is surefire contender for "best cbs" misao

1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
The game was virtually abandoned for a couple of months until I saw this contest. Then I was like, 'sure, why not?' :D

2. Progress report
I've been spending most of my time doing a lot of outlining in a Word file. It's full of character motivations and skill tables. I've also organized the game's database with lots of placeholders. I'm pretty much done with the menu:

3. Set your goals for this week
- Fix a bugged cutscene where the player disappears after it
- Do a couple more maps
- Take screens, quit being a coward, and plop up a gamepage

Those are cute faceset edits Melkino!

But you know, Marche is the main character in FFTA. The name is not common enough for this not to be weird.
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
started this completely from scratch

2. Progress report
RAD DOG's graphics are done and all his movements and actions are working. he has enemies but they don't have any AI yet so they're essentially just punchbags. got a couple of music pieces done which you might've heard

3. Set your goals for this week
get some enemy AI sorted, finish off the music

I never played that game, but I think I'll change her name anyway. :x The sprite that went with the face had rabbit ears, so I felt like going with a loose allusion to the March Hare. Thanks for letting me know :)

1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
0% actually built and a handful of drawings.
2. Progress report
through a wild turn of events, we might actually be using VX to make the colony. blasphemy, i know. i'd rather making all the systems and shit i have planned take a couple of days/weeks than 3 years.
in other news, i have joined forces with a fairly kickin' artist who will be doing some portraits and stuff since this game seriously ain't my drawin' style. shit's going a bit psychedellic.
3. Set your goals for this week
LEARN HOW TO USE VX just enough to get this proverbial ball rolling; shit will snowball from there thanks to a mass of excellent planning.
the biggest roadblock will be TILES. saying goodbye to 2k3 means saying goodbye to 16x16 tiles, and i don't really want to 2x stuff for the '2k3 look,' so that means i will be doing a bunch of custom crap. the good news is it's a short game, so once i have the tiles made for one or two areas, everything else is cut and paste. and since the style already has a lot of caked-on-layers-of-texture, i can cheat the pixeling a bit. not PIXEL ARTIST kosher, but meh.

my goal for the whole event isn't to even have a demo out any more, it's just to put out a rad teaser video and then grind development for a few more weeks after that to actually finish.

1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
Nowhere. I had started writing up an idea before the Game Drive began but scrapped that when I got a better one on the train from London to Manchester this Friday. (that's right it's me J.K. Rowling)

2. Progress report
Made a couple shitty sprites using Charas.ex and am re-using maps from my Action 52 contribution as I am a lazy son-of-a-mother. Also figured out the basic plot but still not completely sure about the battle system. Probably standard jRPG fare except no one uses crazy spells or Limit Breaks or anything.

3. Set your goals for this week
Get the battle system sorted, make a few more maps and re-encode mp3s I'm planning on using.

I'm not very confident about getting this done within the three weeks we have left so at most I'll only be able to get (here comes the lynch mob) a demo ready by the 16th. Ah well.
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
There was no project. I had an idea for a simple story and nothing else.

2. Progress report
- I started working on the game in RPG Maker VX. I actually had all of the maps done, but then I decided to switch to RPG Maker XP. I have re-done most of the maps but I still have to do a few since I decided to make the game a little longer. I still have to go over the currently completed maps to make them better.
- I also finished making the events for the battle system. I just need to fix it a little and then to make it work on all maps.
- I completed a quick character edit for the main character.

3. Set your goals for this week
- Finish all of the maps. (at least a basic version of each)
- Finish setting the battle system so that it works in all of the maps.
- Start the events for the story.
- Create a title image.
- Make a quick video of the battle system.
- Upload better screen shots.

The game itself will probably be done in about two weeks. After that, I will spend the rest of the time improving on parts like adding more detail to the maps and changing some more character graphics.

3. Set your goals for this week
-Get enough for a frikin demo done
-Get more levels done, or at the least planned :|
-Decide whether or not music is that much of a necessity..
-Decide whether or not VA will be needed/desired

2. Progress report
85%

3. Set your goals for this week
Wanna reach 90% until Sunday evening.
Want all the fights to be completed with interface and shit.
Want to finish the final sequence.
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
I was working on the sprite and character concepts and the game concept itself. It was supposed to be a 3 day game.

2. Progress report
I haven't done much except make a walking sprite and a Wij script to help me lessen lag and workload :(
Coolllleeeegggeee

3. Set your goals for this week
I have to review and stuff for final exams, pity :<
I'll try to get some more stuff running though.
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
Well, I initially thought I'd be using a pre-existing map-test project but scrapped that idea on the first day - so I started from zero.

2. Progress report

Not as much as I'd like. I've got most of the town sorted, map-wise. The introduction is complete. A lot of documentation is done - including a bit of loose story-boarding. Graphics are pretty much sorted. Now I just need to do everything else...

3. Set your goals for this week
- Choose one way or another whether I want RPG battles or have it stick to being more action based (think Zelda without monsters - so map interaction and puzzles) I'm leaning more towards battles.
- At least two dungeons of the four done.
- Get all the scripts up and functioning (this ties into the battles too)

1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
I had the project sitting at about 50% completion but had been procrastinating for a long while. :/

2. Progress report
I have completed 3 new major maps and only 4 more remain. Of course after that everything has to be polished and playtested.
The story is already finished, but has to be evented into the cutscenes needed.

3. Set your goals for this week
To finish all the maps, at least. Cutscenes can come later. :)
1. Where were you in your project when you joined the Game Drive?
Started from scratch. Wanted an excuse to make a themed game and try out an ABS in RM2K3.

2. Progress report
Most custom graphics are done, hero sprite, system, title, some char/chipset edits. ABS is working pretty well, have an ammo system, some fancy-ish enemy death effects working. I have 3/4's of a map done (whoops). I've made the bulk of the custom sounds I'll be using (I think...). I am worryingly lacking in music, don't know what to use and fear I may end up trying to make it all myself (which would be cool, but time consuming). Most importantly I've roughly figured out an awesome storyline with a "twist" :D (oh and MORE importantly I have a gamepage up, har har har: http://rpgmaker.net/games/2970/)

3. Set your goals for this week
Finish first "stage" (with BOSS!), start (and hopefully finish) the next one. Do the intro cut-scene. Finalise storyline details. get/make some music.

It's meant to be quite a short game anyway, but getting all the ABS junk to work half decently has took ages and been quite a steep learning curve for me.
