"It takes a 12 step program, hypnosis, a sex change, and the whole damn starwars series to break you away."
- Tyrannos

"Sore Losers" is a cyberpunk RPG set in a modern, dystopian world. The gameplay is largely traditional, but shakes things up with interactive mini-game sequences, optional missions and a deeply immersive setting, all of which serve to break up the common roleplaying grind.

The Setting:

The game is set within the nation of Ferusia, with most gameplay taking place in "Ferusia City", the nation's capital. The nation is a totalitarian state led by a single-party Government, but despite this the general populace of Ferusia are happy with their leaders. The Government's efforts to advance technology and science, whilst at the same time irradicating the distractions of religion and beauracracy, have resulting in the nation becoming the most technologically advanced in the world. The Ferusian military is also incredibly advanced compared to the militaries of other nations, and is the only one on the planet with modern firearms and artillery as well as the only military to have access to the more powerful weapons of war; these weapons include inter-continental, nuclear and biological missiles. The military also acts as a Police Force in most Ferusian cities and towns, a factor that the Government believes deters many from committing crimes every single day. Despite all this power, the country is no longer expansive having already taken control of most of its own continent, but it does has active interests in overseas resources. For instance, the recent discovery of an interesting mineral named Ferustine (named after the country by the research group that discovered it) has led to the stationing of many research groups overseas, all protected by a contingent of the Ferusian Military.

Despite the large majority of people being happy with Ferusian life, and despite the power of the Ferusian military, there are still those who believe a democratic state to be the only way a country should be run. They want more control over how the Government is run and want the Government to be more accountable to its citizens, especially when it comes to what the rebels believe are dangerous genetic and mechanic experiments being run by the Government. Without any solid proof, however, the rebels are fighting a losing battle and are gradually being weeded out by the Ferusian Military. Ferusian convicts also believe they are being treated unfairly; sentenced to life within the "slums" of Ferusia City (an area of the city designed specifcally to contain criminals), petty thieves and fraudsters are placed alongside murderers and rapists in a daily fight to survive.

In the middle of it all are Markus and David, two criminals who have accepted their wrongs and simply go about their lives in the slums. Working for a mercenary leader named Jade, they carry out various jobs for those with enough money to pay, and they're about to set out on their latest; one that will drag them into a conflict they don't understand and don't care to be a part of...

Blarb:

Thanks everyone, especially to anyone who helped throughout this.

So, after basically five years of restarting many different projects under the same sort of title, I've finally got one of them finished. I'm actually kind of amazed with myself because, to be honest, I didn't think this would ever happen; I have a massive tendency to get dragged down into remaking early sections of my games or trying to make their storylines more "epic" than they need to be and that usually puts me off track and leads to be abandonning what I have created.

Well, not this time!

This time I decided not to bother with making an "epic". I decided to put my perfectionism to one side and, instead of trying to recreate the overwhelming pretence that is most RM role-playing games, I decided to make a down-to-earth, fun-to-play game that isn't just a space-bashing romp through fantasy locales with bells attatched. And although I think the dystopian, cyberpunk setting I've created is a realistically gritty vision of life as a condemned criminal, and although I think the locales and non-playable characters are some of the best out there, and although I am quite proud of how the story comes together, none of these are what this game is about.

Instead, Sore Losers is only intended to be a fun to play game for the ten or so hours you'll be playing through it. I hope you'll all come out thinking that I've managed to achieve that.

Features Include:

Over 10 hours of gameplay.
A broad synthesis system that allows you to create and upgrade unique weapons.
Dozens of optional quests to complete, all kept track of by a "To Do List" system.
An Active Encounter System (AES) that removes the need for random encounters.
Inventive Lockpicking and Computer Hacking minigames.
More quotable NPCs than you can shake a stick at.

Screenshots:

Post the game in RMN website with a "production status" and copy that text over there to the game details :)
This game looks pretty cool, too bad I'm pretty much done with RM2k now ... Hopefully someone else will give it a try and give feedback
Looks alright and the to do list looks pretty cool. If i find some time today i'll download your game.
So downloading when I get home (cyberpunk <3).

I'm not a huge fan of the generated facesets, but I suppose you have to do what you have to do. They won't destroy the game (for me).

You'll have problems downloading since the game is still in development... In fact, it is quite a way from being complete :) I'm more interested in whipping up some interest right now.
I love the look of this game. It's something I would play if it was finished and lengthy. One problem though - CHANGE THOSE FACESETS! They're hideous.
Those are Charas Project facesets, right? It might be advisable to change them to even the sprite of the character. Seriously, something needs to be done about Alexis.

What Astonishingly Big Losers you have there, Griever. Seriously, this looks really good, I will check this out when that is possible to do, until then, more makey, less hypey.

I already did this, actually (using the sprite as the faceset). Way to read my mind. I just left the facesets in the post for the sake of it.

I'm going to try and finish up a small, gameplay demo for next weekend (at the latest). It'll probably be about an hour of actual gameplay, but there'll be a lot to do on the side.

Update:

I added a short demo to my game's page here (http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/823/). It doesn't cover a lot of gameplay in an advancing the storyline sense, but in terms of short side-quests and places to explore there is quite a lot included.

Still, this is more of a gameplay test really. I basically want to see what people think of the game's features before I get too far into the game to change them, and also to see if people find strange ways to "break" everything in site. Enjoy, I guess.

Nobody has anything to say..?
Well, stop double-posting is generally a good idea. I'm downloading and trying it out, so I'll write down my thoughts later.

Maybe, but when I can see that the demo has been downloaded 20+ times without a single comment it is slightly irking. :)

New Update Stuff...:

New Character Biography:

Locke:

Age
Twenty Seven

Weapon of choice
Martial Arts (Fists).

Other usable weapons
Two-Handed Swords, Ferusian Military Rifles.

Biography:
Locke is a mercenary who specialises in obtaining data for whoever wants it. He is one of the few mercenaries in the slums who was actually born there, as the slums have only just been in place long enough for second-generation slumrats to come through to age. He is a highly-skilled martial artist, but understands his fists aren't the best weapon in all situations and has learnt to use a few other forms of weaponry too. His martial arts skills focus around dealing out status effects to the target to debilitate them before he uses his raw strength to take them out of the fight.

New System Description:

Synthesis System:

Synthesis is the best way to quickly upgrade your weapons. Random junk scattered around the Slums can be used by wepaonsmiths to upgrade your current weapons into superior weapons.

Release Something Day V:

Not really anything to do with updating, but I am going to try and get a new demo out for the Release Something Day. And by try I mean I WILL, although the length of the demo might not be quite what I want it to be.

Update:

After the feedback from the Release Something! demo I've been working on changing a bunch of things. It's going to put a dent into my forwards progress, but I consider it important to get things just right before carrying on. Most of the fixes are minor improvements, but some of them are me attempting to patch up the more serious issues some people have had with the demo. For instance, I am re-writing a bunch of the dialogue to try and give out a bigger distinction between Markus' and David's characters and I am also trying to make Locke seem as ambitious as he really is.

Feel free to suggest more things you think I should be working on harder if you've played the demo. Below is the list of things I am working on/have already worked on since the demo was released; please take these things into consideration if you download the demo past this point.

  • Added two new cutscenes, one after Locke joins the party and one after the Scott Building "job" in an attempt to flesh out the characters a bit. Both additions let the player look into each characters history/aspirations more if they choose to do so.
  • Reduced the HP of the monsters in the game, although their other stats remain the same and so their difficulty should still be similar (only in shorter bursts).
  • Greatly reduced the HP of the drone that chases you in the Running Minigame to make failing the minigame easier to swallow.
  • Repositioned some of the obstacles in the Running Minigame to make it slightly easier as it was apparently too hard.
  • Changed the shops so that they will now buy items off the player as well as selling items to the player. This just makes earning money slightly easier and saves me making missions for collecting scrap all the time.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed the enemies to attack you whilst deciding whether or not to lockpick.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed enemies to attack you straight after running away from a battle with them.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed enemies to attack you whilst using the menu.

A CHALLENGER APPEARS!

Benji:

Age
Seventeen

Weapon of choice
Chained-Rifle

Other usable weapons
None

Biography:
Benji is a young, brash "junker" who has an obsession with infamy. He was placed in the slums at a young age for playing a prank on his school teachers. Although not a criminal offence in itself, this was a prank that left several injured and some needing psychiatric therapy. Unfortunately for some, although not for Benji himself, being in the slums has taken his already slightly strange sense of humour and twisted it into something a little darker, meaning that he spends a lot of his time commiting acts that leave those who hear about them scratching their heads. Needless to say, he hasn't achieved infamy yet.

Chris:

Age
Twenty One

Weapon of choice
Chained-Rifle

Other usable weapons
None

Biography:
Chris is also a "junker" and can usually be found tagging along with Benji. Despite this, Chris is hardly a prank-loving person and doesn't really care for infamy. Instead, he tags along with Benji because he knows it is easy to steer the pranks towards events that are going to hurt the government, a government he appears to resent. Chris is generally a reserved person and usually only speaks when it is something useful or inciteful, but he will speak in place of Benji when he feels his partner has stepped out of line. Because of his reserved nature, no one really knows why he is in the slums, and most people simply assume he is a second-generation slum dweller...

Also...

I've updated the original post to reflect the fact that this is no longer a game idea or a game in the early stages of development. The main systems in this game are pretty much complete and all that remains is for me to finish making maps, puzzles and cutscenes. Of course, there is still a lot of those to do so I'm by no means near to completion, I just thought changing the blarb up there would be a good idea.

Y'know I keep seeing this but I haven't clicked on it.

Looks like a lot of work has gone into it! I'll be honest though, it doesn't look like my cup of tea, buuuuut I've been wrong with RM games many times before. So why not? Expect a review when I'm finished, I'm in a writing mode!

-Also Chris looks like Super Saiyan 4 Goku =P

So that's where the hair is from...

I just picked the biggest, black coloured hair I could find in the CharasProject generator. I probably should've hovered over it to see where it was from, to be honest, but since I thought it looked good I didn't bother. Oh well.

(Yeah, I make my charsets using a generator, bite me...)
