UNDERRATED RPG MAKER GAMES

The intention of this thread is not to name the best RPG Maker games ever made, but instead point out the best RPG Maker games you don't think anyone else has ever heard of. There's a lot of crap out there on the internet, but buried under the dozens of generic and repetitive RPGs are a handful of games worth playing that, unfortunately, no-one has ever heard of. A handful of games to get started:

Wildcard
Probably the best RTP game ever made. It makes up for its apparent lack of ambition with some fun minigames, a magic system that encourages experimentation, fun gameplay and a total lack of pretentiousness.

The Flashbulb Madness
Has some absolutely ridiculous custom systems and a sense of humor. Otherwise more of a curiosity than anything else.

Shadows of Evil: Wings of Time
A generic-looking but very classy RPG that is also really difficult. Has recently been released in a Deluxe edition which looks promising but in the first five minutes has only served to highlight the original's mediocre writing and story. But since the original was pretty good it should definitely be worth playing.

Asspear

As underrated as this topic is, from the looks of it.

I'll try and give the first game a shot. The other two don't interest me much.
Kinetic Cipher anyone?

ALSO:

Wildcard is very good.
Cyber Factor is underrated in my opinion. It has a lot of neat ideas, and is solidly designed. By solidly designed, I mean I dont want to F12 in the middle of the demo due to some ridiculous design choices. Its also interesting enough to keep my attention.
I second Cyber Factor, its one of the few games that actually realizes that it's an rm2k3 game and works with it rather than making a CBS or something.

RMN's supervillain, and enjoying it

The Sword and the Fish. :<
I love The Sword and the Fish.

The game seemed like it was a pretty big hit when it first came out, though.
I'd like to also put forth the Onyx games as underrated.

The graphics and map design are pretty terrible, but both games have a very interesting cast of characters and solid gameplay. Onyx 2 is a lot better than Onyx 1, but since both games tie together you might want to start with Onyx 1 instead.

Off the top of my head? Shadow's Reach, A Home Far Away, Cyberfactor, Light Prism, Universal Language, and Frozen World. They're probably some more, but I can't think of them.

What is Light Prism? I've heard of all the others, but...

Also I have two more for the list.

Everlong
A very long Final-Fantasy-esque RPG that has been remade many, many times. It started out as a fangame, evolved into a pretty decent game for RPG Maker 2000 and then became one of the best games available for RPG Maker 2003. Its story is pretty generic, but the gameplay is incredibly consistent and there's a very neat skill system that's reminiscent of Naufragar: Crimson's, except a whole lot more useful. Also there are neat gimmicks in every dungeon and a lot of sidequests.

cRaZy_gUy's Journey
Quirkyness is pretty much the name of the game here. A lot of the humor is borrowed from other movies, etc., but on the upside there are a lot of crazy custom systems and stuff. For example, you can raise a Blob in a never-really explained Monster simulator, challenge everybody in the first couple of towns to a strangely strategic game of Paper-Scissors-Stone, etc. It's also a much more consistent game than, say, The Sword and the Fish (which is probably a better humor game anyway)

Everlong isn't really underrated as I hear a lot of people know and like that game. Just isn't that well known here or in some other places.

I think some people are underrated as game creators but can't really think of any underrated games as it's all really opinion based. I think your mostly thinking of lesser known games more so then the quality of said games mentioned.
Aurora Wing is criminally underrated.

I always believed games such as "Channel Changer" and "Total Chaos" deserved some love.

Check it out in the "Rare Games" topic at GW.

I think it's more forgotten than underrated. Didn't it get a lot of attention when it first came out?

I think a great RM game is Lurking Under Life which you can find on RRR. Hardly anyone outside of RRR knows of it but they should as it is by far the scariest horror game I've EVER played, even over non RM ones.

Seconded. My only problem with Aurora Wing is that the game allows the player to save every turn - and, in fact, some missions *rely* on having you reload a lot, especially the final battles. Your hit rate against Valar's flames is so ridiculously low that you have to reload quite a bit, and when fighting the Lath Mediator on Hard, "Random" type healing items are so unpredictable that success heavily depends on reloading a lot.

Other than that, a truly great game. Very good character system, very good maps, very good items, very good custom abilities, very good nearly everything.

Cyber Factor for sure, I tried to get it some love in the Misaos but no luck. Shadow's Reach is also a fantasic demo and I've been waiting a new release for some time. Second Reality: Reflections, for all it's faults still deserves love.

Strangely enough, TC is really popular on foreign websites.

Maybe they think that Lindsay Lohan is a made up person.

Actually even the criticism here is quite heartening - this is the first time I've seen anyone else say they played on Hard, much less beat the game that way!

The earliest versions only allowed saves at the beginning of the turn, but this was basically unsupportable with the length of time turns took. In RM2k this didn't leave a lot of options, unfortunately. If I ever came back to AW or used the mechanics again I would make this a delete-on-load quicksave.
Hm. MAGE. It´s not really THAT thing, buy, hey, it featured the simplest CMS & CBS out there. IT´s really worth playing too, because.. i dunno. i feel simpathy for that game. Anybody knows the author?
