SPHERETERNITY: FALLEN ANGELS
Posts
Okay everyone! My team and I are working on a game inspired by the Star Ocean series called SpherEternity: Fallen Angels. Its a large sci-fi/fantasy RPG adventure...possibly going to be spanning 60-70+ hours. The graphicks are 2.5D, with sprite characters on prerendered 3D backdrops. The style resembles Star Ocean 2 heavily with original spins on designs and animation qualities.
PLOT
The plotline revolves around Kayci Arpegglo, a top fighter pilot in the Origenesis Federation army combating those opoosing the planetary union. Orion, an anti-federation faction, has reared its ugly head...the federation has been warring them for years. Finally Kayci's best friend and captain of her fleet, Ignitious Adam, gets word that Orion has indeed enacted a form of truce. Kayci and a few other pilots are dispatched to go ver details when something happens and Kayci's ship gets pulled back 3.5 billion years into the past and crash lands on a planet there, called Nohde, that in Kayci's original time, had already been destroyed by mysterious means.
After landing, Kayci comes in contact with Nohdain scholar, Indecelio. By form of happenstance and a bit of effort, Indecelio accompanies Kayci in a quest to return her to her original time. Not only does Kayci have to deal with the circumstances around her time/space displacement, but she quickly learns that Nohde, who is the governing planet of the galaxy in this time, is having problems of its own as one peaceful allies turn their backs and start warfare against the Nohdain Defenders Unit army. Along the way more allies are recruited, and what was a simple story about finding a way back becomes much more complex and dire...as the whole universe in every time-frame is threatened by a larger force...requiring the help of the fallen celestials...

Concept criticisms: Sounds totally over the top and unfeasible as an indie game project. I seriously doubt you will finish this, team or not. It reminds me of the first game I was involved with in the gamingw community.
It's far too vast. Scale it back a lot if you want a prayer of a chance at finishing it.
The story is also pretty meh. I always hated how you got stuck on fantasy planets in a game that could otherwise be something like a cool scifi adventure.
Screenshot criticisms: The 3D city looks garish and I couldn't imagine looking at it for prolonged periods of time in a game, much less with 2D sprites walking over it. The faceset mouth animations are annoying, and the blink is a few clicks too slow. The animation test is better animated, but you need to hold longer on the dramatics.
On the other hand, 2D sprites look pretty decent, though a bit plain.

Fantasy planets? Eh... what, my dear, are you talking about? Nohde is far from a 'fantasy planet' or whatever that means...Do you evenknow what you're talking about?
With 1,200 people going to be buying so far (yes, we have a fanbase), I think the company will be finishing this game. I barely have said much about the story, so how do you judge?
Ceridan's 3D models have recieved praises even from more experienced developers...so can't really see what you mean there. Thanks for complimenting my sprites though! I think Razzu is ace at 2D animation; she's pretty much professional, though I guess this type of thing just isn't your style in which case, you don't HAVE to buy it. We've got plenty others buying (1200 is a nice number...calculate 30$ into that and see what profits we make!) so it won't hurt us any.
I really have to question what you know about game making...sorry.

Oh boy, here we go!
I'll skip the bits on the story since I honestly don't care.
Considering you will be working on the game pretty much...forever, your budget will probably exceed the value of 1,200 sales. =)
Also, it just sounds lame.
The designs are fine; the renders are ugly.
No, she's not. Really, really not. It has nothing to do with 'style'. I am in an animation school, and half the people in my Sophomore class produce better quality stuff than what I have seen here.
I am sure you will make more money selling lemonade, or like, getting a $10/hour job for a year. Especially after you count all the people you need to pay with that money, and if you actually budget your workload and time like a company does(what do I pay myself for an hour? That sort of stuff).
I have a question. How many people do you have animating? You mentioned one person, so I assume one. Is there more?
You said you want 2 hours of animation.
Do you know how long it to takes to produce an animated feature? And how many people? And with great levels of both skill and experience? And how much money? Well over the amount you'll make for the game, I promise you.
This is why I think of this as a project that won't get anywhere. Totally overambitious and overwrought. Grand ideas that would be much better executed with knowledge of one's own limitations.
Basically?
You have no idea what you're getting into. Stop getting self-righteous on me because I called you on it.

Even I couldnt pass up something is overboard.
So can I assume then that this will be made purely on your teams free time? If so, This will take LITERALLY FOREVER. Also, can you be sure that you'll even have 1200 buyers? Finally; $30?! I question how well it'll sell at that price.
I'll give you a chance to do more with this before I go crazy with this.
I really have to question what YOU know about game making...No apologies.

I barely have said much about the story, so how do you judge?I'm tempted to call bull on this. You have a forum with 77 members, and I'm just dying to know where these other 1123 fans are, and we haven't even taken into account whether or not they're actually going to buy it.

* Relationship levels allow players to build up or tear down bonds between characters of their choice. Its bad enough dealing with positive values, but you want to do negative values as well?
* Unleash your battle fury with a barrage of special skills and untamed co-op attacks.I wouldn't even consider this a noteworthy feature, as skills are almost mandatory.
* Shift the battles in your favour with ten angelic powers, each carrying their own specialties.Yaaaaay for broken powers.
* A completely original score inspired by Matoi Sakuraba is composed by the talented burstknuckle.Care to sample some of his work?
* A pack of compelling mini-games and sideqests will keep you begging for more.like what kind of minigames?
* The epic storyline unfolds over extended length of gameplay, where many twists and plot turns will keep you on the edge of your seat.Isn't that what a good story suppose to have?
* Stunning visuals both in 2D and 3D with over 2 hours of anime cutscene footage abound. The anime cutscene is going to be the first thing cut. I'm willing to wager money on that.
* Lots more.If you guys finish it.

Haha, I love when people put 'features' in their adverts. Out of all the times that's happened I've seen like two things that are actually features.
1.100 endings? Ha.
2.I'd consider this fairly normal, unless it was around 70-90 like Suikoden for example.
3.I honestly don't care for these, as you can write completely believable relations into the story as is.
4.Not a feature.
5.Kind of not a feature/usless/broken, maybe you'll do this right, I don't know.
6.Give us samples.
7.I'd like to know what these mingames and sidequests are generally like.
8.Every good game has a story. So not a feature.
9.2.5D isn't really my style, but I don't mind, I think it would look horrid to be honest. And yeah, like Neo Prime said, good luck with the anime, cause it aint happening.
Lennon out.
EDIT: Oh yeah and why bother making the first bit of the story sci-fi if you just go back in time anyways? To me thats just being a jerk, or being too unimaginative to make sci-fi work, or both.

I have to agree with what Karsuman and NEO Prime have said. Your expectations are set way too high. I won't judge you by your claim to have 1200 people waiting to buy the game, but the story really isn't anything close to something we haven't seen before. Although, it's basically all thrown together into one plot. You're in space! War is raging! Call upon a power long forgotten! Time Travel! Find a way back home!
I also can't judge based on art because I'm not an expert in that category.
One thing that really shot out at me is the 100+ endings. Don't.. do that. Especially if you're boasting 60+ hours of gameplay. No one anywhere ever will (or could) play your game for 6000+ hours for every ending. That would take you playing through the game for 250 days straight through with no sleep, no job, nothing. Not even bowel functions. One of the greatest mistakes people make all the time is boasting everything there game is going to be, and a few weeks later the game is canceled because the game had way too high of expectations.
Really, this is what you need to grasp. If you continue to work on your game despite our criticisms, then more power to you and good luck, but seriously, almost everyone here that posts is incredibly intelligent and you'd be wise to just admit that it's too great of an ambition. But hey, if you want to go on, then go for it.
We've all been there before, where we try to make something that will be the greatest RPG ever and everyone will love all the super cool features, but we all realized how far we'd really get. Very few have the kind of determination, time, resources, and ability to make a truly exceptional game. Just think about whether or not it really is too much.
I really hope the 6000+ hours really catches your attention because that's just a simple way to show how crazy it is.
This community is also very open and brutally honest. If you can't take harsh (very realistic) criticisms, then I suggest going somewhere else, but this kind of criticism is very rare and very helpful which is why this community is so incredible. Sure it sucks to hear, but it's always for the best.
...6000+ hours!

I blame the OP since when Karusman posted some legitimate feedback their response was pretty much "well I got 1300 people who will buy the game and professionals who like it so screw you

You can't post shit like that on the Internet and expect not get called out on it
Hey, everyone just jumped on the bandwagon after I posted! I didn't mean to start a HOLY CRUSADE against the guygirl.
Also, Neok, we get new people all the time.
Also, Neok, we get new people all the time.
Here is a question; how long has this been in development for? As in, how much actual finished assets, coding and audio tracks do you have for the game?
Also, here's a protip: 1200 people saying they will buy an indie project at $30 doesn't necessarily translate into 1200 people ACTUALLY following through with that promise. Personally I think the price would be too high, particularly since you are nowhere near finished with some of your quite outlandish claims. Indie games of large scale usually go for $15-20, with regular offers on that price too to spark interest.

Agreed with WIP.
Also, I don't think it's really very helpful to have the mentality of OH LOOK WE NEED TO ANNIHILATE THIS OVERACHIEVING PROJECT. I mean, honestly, the creator was a little bit silly to call out Karsuman for "not knowing anything," but what's with the onslaught of negativity? Quality is a relative thing... there are a whole lot of people on this site who absolutely detested Aveyond, for example, but there's no denying that it had its fans and sold reasonably well. Save the tidal waves of criticism for games that actually deserve it.
