THE BEST MODERN RPG MAKER GAMES?

Posts

Pages: first 123 next last
There are always "What are your favorite RPG Maker games?" topics. This is similar, but more about recommendations. I want to play a good game, but it has to be GOOD. And it can't be insanely difficult, eitherâ€"I don't like grindfests or anything boring. That means mechanic or battle-based games. I want somethin with story and setting.

So what games out there are the best, these days? I'm up to date (For the most part) when it comes to good RMXP/VX games (of which there are very very very few), but this place is more about the older makers, right? When I think about ABL or even stuff like Legion Saga or Jay's Journey, I feel goodâ€"like those games had a real special place. Something that feels RPGMaker-y without feeling like an RPG Maker game, if that makes sense.

It's been a while since I got enjoyment from a game like that. What's big and new and what would be fun to play?

Hero's Realm, Exit Fate, Sore Losers.
If I may...
The most recent ones, you say?
Well, here are the ones I'm currently playing:
- Hero's Realm (this game made me put all the other ones in stand-by...)
http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/82/
- Lost Legacy (a gem that would deserve more recognition!)
http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/930/
- Balmung Cycle (another gem, but this one is well known! lol)
You will find the link in the "featured games" topic, I think.
I was obliged to stop Legend of Illarion just because I suck at speed trials and minigames requiring swiftness, but it's a great game too.
You can also play "Demon Legacy", "A Home Far away" (if you are good at speed trials and non-puzzle minigames...), "Phantasy Star III2K", and others I can't remember right now.
The above are all traditional RPGs, (matter of personal taste, sorry) and only RPGM2K3 games, because my comp lags when I try XP or VX. ::)
All have that special touch that make a game to be unique.

Edit:
Oh, and all those games are complete. Not that the demos are bad (they are often excellent!) but it's too frustrating to stop the game in the middle of the story.

He doesn't want to play Geondun (no story/setting) or Legionwood (I disagree with your review).

Everything Turns Grey probably not a great suggestion either, then.

EtG has a setting!

Also, man, Phantasy Star III2k was a Lysgame, right? I need to play that again.

Story and setting.

I suppose Max would say EtG has a story, but I'd disagree (so far).
Ghosts of Aliens, bitchez.

Starless Umbra. Although it's still old the games is still being released after so many years. Ascendence is something to look forward to. Gens 2(Which can be found at Gaming World as Chris hasn't made a game page yet :'() and the others have already been menti- USG almost forgot about that.

Ascendence is really a prime example of a modern RM2k3 game, I think. Also Hero's Realm was also mentioned, which is simple but really fun to play!

Also I'm currently playing through Forever's End. Though the author has addressed most of the issues it still shows a surprising amount of potential, I feel.
Onyx 2 has a very strong story and setting. It's more in line with Shin Megami Tensei than Final Fantasy, which is a nice change from the sea of high-fantasy RPG Maker games.

On the other hand, the map design is pretty terrible, and the game is an almost-direct sequel to Onyx 1. Nether the less, it's a pretty good game.

Also, Exit Fate is excellent.

It's the revamped version, with changes in the battle system and so on. The last update was made...last April!

Epic Dungeon Monster Explore
I third Ascendence.
Epic Dungeon Monster Explore

I don't see how this kind of game is fun at all. All these games where its just wandrin around and fighting aren't fun to me. I want a good setting, characters, and story.

Ascendence looks cool, but there's only a demo released. Most of these only have demos. Is there anything complete?

Oh, cool, I didn't see your edit. Thanks.

Hero's Realm's early FF rips turn me off horriblyâ€"if it's anything like the title and the graphics hint at, it's the kind of old-school game wher you just walk around and kill monsters. Not that it's necessary a bad thing, but that style of game bores the hell out of me. Exit Fate isn't RPGMaker enough for me, if that makes sense (and Last Scenario looks too RMXPâ€"and I want something pleasantly 2K/3). It doesn't look like it has the kind of inspirational charm that I'm looking for. Maybe I'm ust really picky, but I plan to sink a good amount of hours into the games.

I'm gonna try my hand at Balmung Cycle, even though the graphics originally threw me off (I've seen those graphics used in a million games). It does look well-made, though. I'll probably do a review or something eventually. Thanks.
