oh i was jk.

the moves are real, although they do it in a way to not do much damage. everything else is fake tho, the "feuds" and the outcomes and such. mankind really took it to the next level in terms of real physical pain, getting body slammed into thumb tacks haha that was around the time i stopped watching. i watched it a lot back in the days of ultimate warrior and the hulkster

that General Hospital stuff was pretty funny. my family got together at thanksgiving and it turned into a huge discussion about soaps. even my uncle was in on it

It's still pretty fake. I just hate seeing a guy pretend to be woozy so the other guy has time to climb the ropes or setup some over the top flashy move. Do they still do the 'referee conveniently knocked out but comes back in time to do the count for the cheater'? I'm well aware that it's all part of the show, and everyone is in on the gag. I only liked wrestling cause as a kid I did think it was real. Wrestlemania 2000 on N64 was the shit.

As an adult I prefer UFC.

you... haven't got the point at all :( besides UFC zzzzz

i liked this thread better when we were cutting promos
As an adult, I still prefer pro wrestling over MMA, especially Lucha (Mexican wrestling) and Puroresu (Japanese wrestling). Preference and all that. I find MMA a little boring, but I still watch some of it. The reason I prefer wrestling is because of its scripted nature and the zaniness of the characters.

Anyway, if TFT wants a rival, he needs to cut a promo on somebody. Pronto. Then, let the banter begin. Maybe start it in a blog, or call the person out in another thread.
I don't think anybody's worthy. Blindmind actually had heart..

ha so what is the point? if the outcome is predetermined, then that's what fake. i like sports where each player/team has an equal chance of being the victor and skill/luck is what determines the outcome. even if the fans of wrestling don't know what will happen, the fact that the wrestlers do is enough to turn me off.

ufc can be boring, very boring. i only watch certain guys;anderson silva, brock lesnar, rampage jackson... ground groping is pretty lame. i try and watch only if i'll be able to fast forward. it's still better than wrestling, to me.

Perfectly fine and acceptable. A lot of times, however, the fans do NOT know what will happen, but the WWE has become incredibly formulaic, but if you want some realistic matches, watch Japanese wrestling like NOAH or NJPW. Lucha is very colorful and acrobatic. It doesn't turn me off at all. The same happens when I watch a film, play a game, or read a book. I enjoy the journey; most of the time I'm not in it for the destination (or the result). They're all scripted, but that doesn't make 'em any less entertaining. I've stopped caring for who wins in wrestling - I just enjoy the matches and banter.

It's still a form of entertainment, though, at least for me.

I'm not gonna argue which is better, because it's a pointless and tired "debate," if you can call it that.

Rampage Jackson does own, though. :D

that's a valid point. books and movies would be where i know its scripted and i enjoy the journey. games are interactive so even though its scripted you still feel like your in control because normally you can lose/die. i see wrestling as a sport though and not strictly entertainment. "the most electrifying man in sports entertainment" haha i like my sports spontaneous. it's just preference, im not trying to say anything about the people who watch it or that they're stupid for enjoying it cause its scripted. i don't actively watch wrestling or ufc anyways. but when it comes down to a sport where guys fight, dbz(lol)>ufc>boxing>american wrestling. i dont know anything about japanese/mexican wrestling and i dont really want to.

i like Hogan Knows Best

idk it just seems to me a bit like watching a film and saying 'but they're not really space marines and they're not really shooting up aliens they're just actors with a script and some props', ignoring what's actually being done because of the staging of it

the real difference is these actors do their own stunts
Boxing is better than all of it.

Also I totally understand the argument you're making but this depends on what kind of entertainment value you derive from wrestling. If you're watching wrestling as if it was a sporting event, then no, it being scripted isn't going to be very interesting to you at all.

yeah i can't imagine people finding out that it's scripted (surprise!) and carrying on watching because they like the showmanship and the athleticism (the good majority of smarks)

p.s. boxing sucks a fat dong

Except the competitiveness, half of the reason why people watch football, American football, baseball, basketball, etc etc is completely thrown out the window when its scripted. I'm not arguing against your other points, but the impression I'm getting from you is that something being scripted and having a predetermined outcome has no deterrent to you at all.

A big reason why people like sports is the competitiveness, seeing who's going to win based on their skill and talent, and seeing their favorite teams and personalities go head to head and seeing who comes out on top based on who's better than the other guy/team at what they do, and not a script.

Would you enjoy football with the exact same fervor if it was scripted? I know you'd still enjoy it, but you can't seriously try to argue that a sport being scripted isn't mutually exclusive with a massive other factor on why people enjoy it.

confusing professional wrestling with sport: the worst mistake you can make. there's a reason the WWF/E started using SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT constantly (and now they've thrown it out completely and gone with LIVE ENTERTAINMENT)

besides which, the hypothetical viewer doesn't know the result. for a mark the result is still "THAT GUY IS AWESOME HE BEAT THE OTHER GUY HE'S THE BEST I'M GONNA BUY A T-SHIRT" and for a smark it's supposed to be "oh that's an interesting way to go that throws x and y part of the angle in an interesting light i wonder what direction they'll go in from here" etc.
Well, that's what I was saying;

If you're watching wrestling as if it was a sporting event, then no, it being scripted isn't going to be very interesting to you at all.

If we can agree to the fact that watching professional wrestling as you would with a sporting event is a mistake, than yes, it is.

Also boxing is pretty awesome. The flaw in it is that unless you're watching two very talented boxers go at it (Manny/Mayweather/Tyson/Hollyfield/etc) than yeah, it's not very fun to watch. It's fun to do though, I boxed for a while when I was in school, and even though I didn't go anywhere with it and I just did it for something to do, it's very fun!

err, right. equally watching, say, football as you would watching film / tv show / theatre is a silly thing to do. ("wow look at the way messi genuinely looks disappointed that he hasn't scored what a great acting performance oh man that grass looks so lifelike it's almost as if it was real turf"). i'm not sure what point you were trying to make there
