Does anyone here remember Xenosofts mapping contests, the ones JKB and Faroz used to enter and kick ass in. GWs hay day I guess. Some amazing entries were coming out of those contest, I was just wondering if we could try something similar?

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

I'm totally into this however I was never a person who had any influence so I couldn't do anything about it.

You know, I don't think you really need to ask for permission to run a small event like this. Just open a thread and have at it. If people want to sign up they will.
Sounds an easy way to gather achievements and makerscore. o/

Will the map size be restricted to 320x240 pixels or is it more a "map structure" contest with huge maps being allowed?
I think it shouldn't be limited to a single screenshot as it would hardly give idea of the functionality of the map. If I may also suggest, limit the "contest" to one tileset, so it focuses more to map designing abilities, than image manipulation skills.

Agreed with stonebro. Part of level design is presentation. Not practicing presentation - of which image manipulation is a part - is just turning this into e-dickery and less of a public experience with game design.

EDIT: God dammit I should just do those events kentona wanted me to do

Why not just have a set theme instead. That way we can have the flexibility of using what graphics we like but still be sort of similar. I vote a type of dungeon or town or just something simple that everyone can interpret differently.

Can this be done in an editor that isn't passé? XP or VX (get the trial if you don't own one) would let people experiment with 32x32 tiles in the modern era.
I'm not really too excited about XP or VX's visual mapping capability so far, though. The best XP map is about on par with say...a barely above average 2K3 map. The tools for XP/VX maps to look stellar, I just haven't seen.

craze is my favourite militant homosexual RMVX user

obviously we would need a stipulation to say it must be an app and not just screenshots. no mocking it up in photoshop

I don't get this. Pretty much the only differences between 2k3 mapping and XP mapping are that XP has 3 layers instead of 2, and that XP allows you to place any tile on any level. VX is a different story, obviously, but I don't see how you could say 2k3 mapping is better than XP.

(Unless there is some major difference between XP and 2k3 mapping I don't know about?)
