Awesome Custom Art Is Awesome

So, I've started working on this game again as you all probably know by now. The game's coming along really well and I'd like to think people want to see it finished but... that's not really what this blog's about.
What this blog is about is some awesome custom art my friend James did for the project. Working from a single 16-bit sprite and this drunken instruction, "Dude, just draw whatever you want!", he managed to turn out this portrait of Riot Grrrl's main character, Cheska...

... and it is basically amazing!
So, yeah, I'm pretty freakin' happy with it. Maybe I can coerce him into drawing more stuff with the promise of more beer (as I definitely owe him a couple of pints after this)!

This is basically the way I felt when booble started helping me out. Seeing your characters out of their regular sprite appearance is really motivating.

As a fellow artist, I could nitpick this to hell over its mistakes, but there's plenty more out there much worse.

i would like to see your art, actually. if you think this piece of art has mistakes, lmao. oh yes, i'm sure the only mistake is it's not "anime".
i really like the art. it's hard to not appreciate physical pieces done in pencil/colored without it being thrown through photoshop.
corfaisus, was the knock really necessary? it's not like f-g is the artist, and it's not like this is an art thread either.

You don't have to be a master of a craft in order to find flaws in a work. Also, that's pretty damn anime.

I don't think it looks that anime-influenced... but I've seen a lot more of James' work than you guy's have/can so I kinda know that he doesn't draw that way.
I'd have to ask to be sure, but I think it is coloured pencil. The image is scanned, which has added to the texture a bit; I actually like how it's turned out as a result! I'll probably see him tomorrow, so I can ask then.

I dunno. I've always been unhappy with the way the cutscenes look in-game as I always wanted to include something more like the cutscenes in Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis. Unfortunately, I doubt James has the time to produce a bunch of stills for me and I definitely don't have the talent to do it myself.

I think a mixture of hand-drawn pencil-coloured pieces and your block-colour style would make for a really, really interesting looking game. Would be awesome if you could get a few more done.

So, this is definitely a coloured pencil piece. I thought it was, just had to make sure.
EDIT:
@NicoB: My original plan was to have optional characters join you for certain levels based on your actions. However, I may scrap that and just have Cheska as the only character. I haven't really decided yet, it kinda depends on how easy it is for me to stick new characters into the storyline*.
*Implying I can write stories!
