Ara Fell Greenlight Campaign

Today, Ara Fell's Greenlight campaign officially begins.

It has been a hell of a couple of weeks.

I went from wondering if there was any way to get anyone to care about Ara Fell when I started this, to receiving offers from multiple publishers, to being encouraged by several friends and testers to go it alone and post it to Greenlight, thinking the campaign could be successful.

After agonizing over this, I've decided I'm finally going to do it.

So here I am, and here it is. After all this,

Ara Fell has been submitted to Steam Greenlight.

For those of you who know me, or have followed Ara Fell since its "Remastered" announcement, you know what a gut-wrenching experience this has been for me. I've failed at every game I've tried to make, and have done so spectacularly. Not this time. Ara Fell is weeks away from completion. I am not running out of steam like I did on previous games. I am not losing my motivation. I am not burnt out.

I have dumped hundreds of hours, and I know this sounds melodramatic, but my heart and soul into this as well. Ara Fell was the first thing I ever tried to make that I loved. Not because it was good (or not, as the case may be). No, it was just something I loved to make.

And now, finally, finally, I can see it end. I can close this god damn, gaping hole that's been festering inside me for the ten years since I started it.

Help me get this thing Greenlit. Go vote yes, and tell your friends or anyone else you think might care, if you want to see it succeed. I need all the help I can get, and every "yes, I'd buy it" helps.

Thank you so much, everyone. I've received so much support and well-wishes and love from everyone on this project, and I don't think I ever would have made it this far without it. It would mean the world to me if you could help me get the rest of the way.

Just finished logging in to Steam for the first time in two years and gave it a “Yes” for you, good buddy.

Good luck. Hopefully it manages to get enough support in order for it to get officially greenlit.
Thanks, Addit. Your original review of Ara Fell is actually one of the reasons I was inclined to come back and do this, so you've been more help to me than you know.

Hopefully you'll feel more or less the same way after you've had a chance to play the new version.
Voted yes. Good luck!
Good for you, Badluck. I know what its like putting heart and soul into a project, even if it does take years to complete. =)

Oh really? Ha! Now I’m actually happy that I went along with the whole thing and played it again and reviewed it for the site. Booyah!

And something tells me from all the new screenshots and that new trailer that you posted up that I’m going to like it a LOT more than I already do right now. :)
Wow yeah, I'm excited you opted for the self-publishing route. :) I think this is probably the best direction the project could have taken.

I hope that's true. Now, let's see if it works...

I must say I have not had the chance to play Ara Fell yet, but I just put in a yes vote for you on Steam! I too know what it's like to hold a dream for at least a decade, so the vote's for your dedication and spirit.

The game looks great and I promise I'll play it when I get some free time.

Good luck with your campaign!
Wait a moment! How is it possible to release it to Steam if you are using Refmap Ressources?
Unless you have the approval of the Refmap creator to use these ressources in a commercial game you are bound to get a lawsuit aren't you?
Someone on RPG Atelier tried several ways to contact the Refmap creator Mackie7 (with several email-adresses) but didn't get an answer...
(in this thread)
Unless they explicitly changed the terms of using their graphics (and I'm fairly certain they haven't), REFMAP resources are free to use in commercial projects, as well as modifying them.

Their old official site specifically said all you had to do was give them credit, and not sell the graphics themselves, and they were otherwise free to use.
Yeah, REFMAP stuff is definitely free to use in commercial games as long as you give proper credit.

Congratulations on getting greenlit! I've played the original a little bit and am curious to see how the game's evolved after all these years.
Well, I'll put it like this.

Having gone back and played through the original, I was actually kind of embarrassed by it. I started fixing this game up back in May. After working on it damn near full time since then, I'm proud of it now.

Obviously, my assessment of it is going to be a little biased, but regardless, it's a hell of a lot better than it was.
That sounds awesome! I didn't play much (I only reached the first boss in the cave) and one of the main cons with it IMO was how slow the pacing felt (maybe laid-back is a better word? It did feel slow though and I didn't really know what was going on in the plot.).
I remember getting lost/stuck since I couldn't figure out what to do in the town to move forward the plot and the battles felt a bit unbalanced. I remember the battles being slow, while fighting really easy enemies (mostly mashing attack IIRC)...until you face off against the boss. I'm usually pretty good at these kinds of games, but I just couldn't beat it. I felt like I had to grind more in order to beat it, which turned me off since I hadn't played the game far enough to be fully invested in it.
All in all though, what I mainly saw was potential and creativity. It felt like a labor of love.

Well, enough about the original, it's time for me to try out the real deal! I'll try to come back with some feedback after I've played it.
Good luck BadLuck (lol). I really love Ara Fell, one of the best RPG Maker games I ever played and a source of inspiration for my projects in RM2K3.
