A call for hellspawn! (beta testers)

I'm ramping up for a full release of Hellion and am considering having a beta testing phase just before release looking primarily for balancing issues (and bugs, of course). Hellion's stat and skill growth are wildly variable, not to mention the random loot generation system, and there is no way I could test it all. Even with testers it's impossible.

In any event, I am hoping to find Mysterious Wanderers willing to play test the game. If there are no takers, I will probably opt for an open beta (but I don't really want to do that (but given the lack of activity in the Blogs, it might happen)).

Sweet. I was beginning to wonder if anyone read the blogs.

I'll add you two as testers and upload something right away. It'll be a work-in-progress, playable until the end of Floor 9 (the Caverns). I'm currently playing through as a Rogue and am halfway through floor 8 (so floor 9 is completely untested).

You shouldn't need RTP installed (but if you have problems, let me know).

Also, if you guys play this game, can you tell me:
- what class you were
- any time you die
- why you quit testing

What I'm looking for is feedback on:
- balancing!
- errors
- story cohesion, delivery and general plot points
- balancing
- fun factor

Also, I encountered a strange issue wherein my hero's stats were like 100 points higher than they could possibly be. I was around floor 5 or 6 when I noticed it, but never found the cause. If you notice that your hero seems to be extremely overpowered, let me know.
Well, I got most of the way through the 1st level tonight.

Died A LOT against the pixie mage guarding reia's father.
then I bought Summon Vine and the next level vine spell.
I also used the Cantrops I got from a chest. (INCERDIBLY useful!)

I am also irked by the fact that I can't pickpocket Drakees.
With level 3 pickpocketing I'm hardly surprised though. :P



A final note: I think every who plays this game will have a second data as a rogue. Why?

Because a weak player character can be offset by party members; (and rogues ain't that weak, either,) but poor skill growth is stuck as poor skill growth. Perhaps have NPC's that can train you in a skill/ sell you a skill increase item/ a permanent bonus to skill points on level up, etc.
Though the kensai's battle skillset kicks ass, It's still not enough to make me play as one.
The opposite is true for the rogues battle skillset. Nothing particularly memorable.


I guess there's a reason for the polar opposites, but if a player wants to be a powerhouse, they have to sacrifice their OOBS.
Not fun for people like me who like statmaxing.
The feeling of going "watch this" and stealing someone's clothes right off of them is extremely satisfying.


In fact, you should put that in the game.
If you pickpocket someone and have a maxed out pickpocket stat, the persons sprite should change to a man in boxers/woman in nightgown. And their clothes would just be in your inventory as a trophy.

Admit it. That would be awesome. :P

Anyway, I hope I wasn't too harsh.
it's just that since the rouge gets SEVEN skill points, and it only costs one to upgrade the useful skills, it almost makes me sad that I decided to play as an Animagus.
(Which can't use Summon Vine or BeWerewolf on level one, BTW. Perhaps give them EXACTLY 15 mp so they can at least use a morph/summon ONCE. If they can get it on level one, they should be able to use it on level 1, right?)
Oh and, don't worry, I'm gonna play the **** outta this game. It's a like playing DQM2 all over again. :)

FROM TESTERS
-Skeletons + King on world map (oops!)
-world map far too strong
x-door blocking caverns in town
-Enemies too weak? kensai crushes most in 1 hit
-battles a little on the easy side
-Mara is far to weak physically -> constantly dies
-Cristo can't equip swords
-MP potions are pathetically cheap
x-Bosses were disappointing -> need to redesign/rebuild
-cross-class skills are next to impossible to keep up.
- +10 persuade isn't that great -> most useful things require higher persuade
-Persuade in general is under utilized
-Mindfreak feels like it completely fails in all things Skill related
-wouldn't mind seeing an NPC that can reset skill points OR a trainer that can increase skill points/specific skills
-flashbacks are cryptic
-psyblasts do Stun -> not mentioned anywhere, and INCREDIBLY effective (even on bosses)
-Slow lasts too long, always hits
-Haste/Slow/Focus tree is backwards in terms of effectiveness
-Haste + Slow + Stun almost every attack makes battles a joke -> make them single target, or remove one of them entirely
-INT stat does nothing!
-Gold is trivial
-Bizon Stampede is too strong (80-100 damage)
-7 Sacrifices event switch is broken - battle doesn't turn off!
-Boulder puzzles can be cheated by opening menus -> same with enemies. Disable them in the Pit?
-When Mara joins party, Lars levels up (should be Mara)
-Opening Skills menu kills Mara (!)
-Floor of Darkness encompasses all floors
-There's an impassable tile next to the chest containing the Magic Key at the top of Zaldach tower
-The crazy man in the graveyard has a *!*\ appear in his text
-The switch that opens floor 10 can be hit multiple times.
-able to unequip The Cursed Maul
-Cursed items didn't seem to have any negative effects
-Do away with the Confirm question when leaving menus
-Titles for hirelings should be unique
-The Butcher fight kept giving me the message "The Butcher's armor has cleansed him!". I have no idea what it was talking about.

-Exploration is fun and rewarding, battles are useless. They have little reward compared to the gold pots and aren't interesting enough yet. Let's hope this improves later on.
-Oh look. I just got four pieces of equipment in this room. OH LOOK, MY PARTY CAN ONLY EQUIP ONE OF THEM.
-Having Small Medals in front of my healing herbs is annoying as Hell.
-Cursor doesn't fit on Rasp's symbol.
-You can 'run' in the skill/ability menus. :<
-If you're running when you drop down the well and press as you are falling, you can walk on all tiles and the player stops animating.
-I can walk all over town, too!
-The problem with the ability/skill menus are that you can reset rock puzzles and move enemies farther away from you with them. I'm being an honest tester, but perhaps think about forcing them to only be used in town?
-I've been keeping Forage the same as my actual level but I still suck at it. :<
-Why would you get Bone Armor when Turn Undead is better/cheaper?
-When you bash the wall in the left part of the second level (to get into the disco library), if you take damage it says that the damage source is a lock.

FROM DESIGNERS
-the random weapon/armor from Taloon should cost 1000 X Current Floor, not just 1000
-Inn is really cheap...
-Gold is really easy to get (25,000+ for Rogue at end demo)
-For persuade, perhaps things like shops and Taloon and the like could have scaling difficulty, increasing the deeper you go in the pit (instead of the static Persuade requirement assignment as it is now). That way low Persuade points are more useful AND there is impetus to increase it later on.
