OOBS

A common complaint from my beta testers was that OOBS (outside-of-battle skills) were underpowered with no real way of improving them - especially cross-class skills. I realize now that I didn't really think that one through too well.

So, the goal is to provide the player with a way of improving their OOBS. I have 5 ideas:

1. Have an OOBS trainer in the village that will permanently increase particular skills for a price

2. Have Hirelings give you a boost in certain OOBS when they are in your party
For example, Lars the Brute would give a bonus to Bash.

3. Increase the available skill points on levelups

4. Have more quests where the reward is a boost to OOBS

5. Have equipable (or consumable) items that can boost OOBS

What do you guys think?

I like the idea of 1, 2 and 4, personally.
For 2, what would be better:

a) Having the hireling give a bonus to your skill (like, +5 to Bash)

b) Having the hireling have a set level in a skill, and if greater than yours, use theirs (ie, Lars has a Bash rating of 15. If you have <15, then the game uses Lars's rating of 15 for the effective Bash rating)

I agree completely with Karsuman. I also think that it should be a set bonus - think of it as co-operation or mentoring. Both you AND Lars would bash the door; both you AND Allanon would work on deciphering parts of the tablet; you would pick the lock while rogueman would give tips.

OOBies
I like ideas 1, 2, 4, and 5.

I'd like to see #1 more than anything else, and as for #5 I'd say only take consumables and make them as rare as seeds are currently.

As for your question on #2 I prefer method A, since a boost in a certain OOB would make me think about taking other characters, but having another party member absolutely excel in a skill I was terrible at would more or less force me to take them along. Though depending on the implementation I could see B working too (such as having other characters progress in their OOB skill as they level).
I like four and five.

You could just make it to where the amount of skill points earned each level increments enough so that the player can keep the ones they want to use at high enough levels. There's no reason to make it possible for the player to be able to take advantage of all of the skills (tinkering with different class/skill setups, where hath thy gone?) and end up making the chosen class not matter much as far as OOBS goes.
Well, I already violated that principle somewhat by including hirelings - some classes are just better warriors, yet you can boost yourself by grabbing certain hirelings.

Hirelings with better OOBies!
I like #2 and #5, since there's an opportunity cost for it.

#1 seems like a bad idea, otherwise, you can choose a non-OOB class and get top-notch OOB skills for some extra work, making some classes pretty underwhelming - would you allow the Rogue to pay money to become as good at hand to hand as the fighter, summon ghosts, or heal?

#3 and #4 might be nice if you feel people need more points in general, although I'd be leery of doing #4 too much, or it would become much like #1.
I have implemented #1, as follows:

There is a new NPC named HIggins Obsmeister in the basement of the school. He is an aging treasure hunter who is a bit daft, but earnest. He will teach you 4 things:

1. Increases available Ability Points by 2 for a price (starting at 2500 gold, and doubling each time it is done)
2. Trains you in your weakest skill (+15 bonus!) after you reach a certain depth in the Pit
3. Trains you in your cross-class skills (+5 bonus) after you reach a certain level
4. Trains you in 5 skills ONE TIME ONLY, depending on if you are good or evil, with a bonus equal to YOUR_LEVEL / 3 + 1

I have implemented #2, as follows:

Cristo Healer N/A
Lars Brute Bash +8
Jet Solo Thief Lockpick +5, Disarm +5, Hide +5, Pickpocket +5
Mara Mage Decipher +10
Sylar Pyromancer N/A
Julliet Illusioninst Detection +9
Allanon Druid Forage +3
Thom Bard Persuade +7
Birgette Warrior N/A
Chow-Yun Monk N/A

I did not do #3, #4 or #5, but I will be doing #4. I just have to make another quest later on in the Pit.
