Avarice is an action roleplaying game created in two weeks for the 2009 Game Chill Competition. The contest's theme of Opposing Forces is represented by the forces of Magic and Technology in the world of Arvera, where the scattered remains of an ancient civilization have left the people with an abundance of both but an understanding of neither. The game's projected playtime is around two to three hours, but it was designed to have a considerable amount of replayability.

What is it about?

Avarice is the story of an arrogant sorcerer, Vandeli, who is searching for something, and he will do whatever it takes to to find it. Drawn into his affairs is a girl named Lexi, a savvy young scavenger who seems to bring trouble with her wherever she goes.

Game Features

-The Seraph Shooting System by Anaryu, for unique real-time combat.
-A very wide variety of attacks and abilities including melee weapons, firearms, magical spells, and traps.
-Enemies that can detect your presence by both sight and by sound. Or, catch an enemy off guard for extra damage!
-Supports both mouse and keyboard play.

-Two playable characters with unique weapons, abilities, and talents.

-Customizable Character Talents : Use your earned experience to improve your characters' ability to attack, use items, activate objects, or overcome obstacles such as locked doors.

-Nonlinear Story and Gameplay: Explore the dungeons of the world in whatever order you wish, depending on your actions certain story sequences may be different.

-Variable Difficulty Levels to suit any level of challenge. At higher difficulty, some enemies even gain new attack patterns.

-Randomly generated treasure and loot. Find a huge variety of weapons, armor, spells, accessories and more!

-Two possible endings.

Inglorious Glory

Most people have probably noticed by now, but Avarice is back on RMN after a brief hiatus.

It's been over a year since this game was completed, but it is still very much a product of its very short development cycle. There are a number of graphical glitches throughout the game, the occasional typo (my typing skills are the stuff of legends) and certainly still some balance issues. I would have liked to have fixed some of these issues, but no longer have access to RMVX. I had never used VX before this project, so, due to the two week development cycle of the Game Chill Competition, I did all of my work for this using only the 30 day VX trial! So unfortunately these issues are likely to remain.

Though the game is kind of old news around here, Avarice still manages to get bursts of activity from time to time. It was mentioned in last year's Hyper magazine article, and both YDS and Deckiller have done a "Let's Try" for the game. YDS' videos are unfortunately no longer available, but Deckiller's can be viewed here.

What amazes me is that this was made in two weeks... and is free. There are commercial RM titles out there that took more than a year to make and they're ghastly. Yup, definitely amazing <3

I have only 1 complain, I played the whole game on insane and had little to no difficulty until the last fight, then I forced to set the difficulty to easy and still died multiple times.

also there seems to be a targeting bug, sometimes enemy hit me before the projectile reach me, sometimes enemy hit me behind a wall, but overall it was a lot of fun :)
Hey Solitayre/Anaryu/Krissana, played this and really enjoyed it (factoring the battle system in maybe more than Aetherion, though I'm still really looking forward to the expanded edition of that game). Makes me wonder what you guys could do if you were to make something outside of a contest, considering it only took two weeks for something as awesome as this.

Something like this is in progress with Aetherion. It's been a long time in the works and gone through a lot of revisions because we're not doing it in RPG Maker and we're learning a lot of new things as we work on it. More news on that hopefully soon.

Avarice was a lot of fun to make, glad you enjoyed it.

Doing something outside contests is tougher - no strict timelines and more time means we want to actually polish things instead of just make an idea a 'demo reality' like this previous games.

1.i have no idea what triggered this but while i was in the town that starts with a K which is the 1st town after you meet the mage
my healthbar,mp bar and skill icon in the bottom right have disappeared
i loaded a earlier save just to check and i could not find anything in the settings which could of did this

2.able to go past the guard even tho they say you cant go any further(tho you cant go into the next area anyway

he says whats supposed to be thing but misspelled

That's supposed to happen. Not a glitch. It should return when you leave town again.

I don't remember if that's supposed to happen or not.

I'm not surprised there are grammar or typographical issues in the game. It was made in two weeks and I was a legendarily bad typist back then. (I still am, but not quite as bad.)

phew this is a good game going to do a teaser play up until the the mage joins your party if not the 1st town after i finish the game :3

Edit-finished the game the ending choice is really cool but i atm dont think winning with lexi is possible due to the cd on healing items and the 3 hits at most death

Hm, did I post the script version for this live for people to use? I usually only do that on request.

One thing I don't do is support these systems since they're made just for the game, I like to spend my time making new games instead of supporting a system that I didn't really publish, so you'll need to figure it out or add it yourself, sorry!

Medium length ARPG. Game was good for the most part: mapping, writing, battling, whatever. I died to each of the bosses at least once but managed to beat them after a few additional tries. Then comes the final boss(es).

The final boss (both of them) are total BS. The projectiles they fire have insanely high DPS (e.g. 100 dmg per projectile when you have 500 Max HP, and they fire about 20 of these within 2 seconds). And the worst thing of all, it's bugged. The projectiles dont even need to touch you to do damage, in fact sometimes they damage you as soon as they spawn, regardless of where you are. Sometimes projectiles also do damage to you when they hit a wall or despawn for any reason. I usually die immediately when this starts to happen, which makes the boss impossible to beat.

Now I'm not the most skilled player I admit, but the problem is the messed up scripts, whatever it was. I would try more if it was fair, but in this case it isnt. You cant dodge or anything because the projectiles hit you as soon as they disappear elsewhere or worse, as soon as they spawn, even if you are nowhere near them. I didn't see this problem anywhere else in the game. As it is, I'm gonna quit and I understand the developers arent able to fix it because it's just too old.

EDIT: Beat one of the bosses but my crap stopped recording for some reason. Too bad, I'm never trying that again. Basically you have to get them stuck on the single pillar in the area. Its extremely difficult, you must stand at the perfect spot for them to be stuck there. And it doesnt even work for the other boss, they just shoot rockets that immediately hit you without even touching you. Total BS.

Sorry you had a bad time! Yeah, this game was developed in two weeks and we definitely didn't have time to extensively test the final boss(es), nor did we manage to work all of the kinks out of the shooting system. I think it would benefit a lot from 'mercy invincibility' (being immune to damage for a few frames after getting hit; think Mario) which we unfortunately didn't think to include at the time.
