Violator!

I have all the maps I'll need for a while. Maybe they could use some sprucing up, but I can leave those concerns for later. I'm not touching the skill database. So, the things I get to work on now are enemies, and dialog? Exactly! Even now, I'm preparing to set up the fight with Matsuda and Tomika, and generally getting the opening sequence into the game before players get whisked off to become Kazuto.

The hope is that the demo will be up to the Proving Cave (or whatever I'm actually going to call it). I figure it just being the Matsuda/Tomika fight would be dumb, and not particularly representative of what the game could offer. How soon will it be before it's ready to be tested, or whatever? I'm going to approximate a week, but, we'll see how things fall into place. I'll certainly make a post when things are ready! Maybe a status as well for a bit more visibility. I dunno. I get the particular impression this game is very much under-the-radar since there's much better games out there. Not to mention how long this page has been dead.

Hrm. The test battle I just did against Master Tomika seemed a bit tight for my liking. The base-stats he was "looking at" didn't accommodate for equipment bonuses either. Let's try toning down his difficulty level by a step, and see how that goes.


*Edit: Okay, stepping down the difficulty and ignoring equipment bonuses was the thing to do. Though, I'm noticing how big the bonuses are with the higher-level stuff. The damage output the boss had isn't where it was "supposed to" be, but, considering that there isn't a separate stat for magic defense in this engine, I really don't want to increase his INT all that much.

So, it's high-time to figure out what's up with this stupid cave. The ideas floating in my head seem to center around a vague-to-none importance in regards to the cave's value at the offset of the task. However, the happenings there would prove Kazuto's use to the Jade Order. Still need to figure out what's going to happen there, though.

Whatever I decide to do, I'm kinda thinking the context of being sent to the Dragon Fist might seem a bit familiar to players of Arbiters From Another World. Not that this is a bad thing, though!

Aside: I am strongly considering having Okiku, Star Apprentice references into this game. Not direct ones, though.

*Edit: Weird. I gave this some a test-runs, and the first line of the game keeps displaying after moving to Kazuto in Jade HQ. I have no idea why it does that, and it's annoying me that it does it.

Well, at least the game functions the way I expect it to otherwise. Small blessings, I suppose.

There's still a few things I'd like to do before a release, though. Mostly, this involves inserting non-essential NPCs, but, there is still that bug in the opening sequence the I mentioned in the last post. I have a theory about how to get rid of the bug (it involves activating self-switches), but, I'm still not sure why it's displaying the first line of text from the previous map's parallel-process-with-no-trigger to begin with. I'm sure this doesn't happen in VX Ace!

In any event, I'm delineating both the NPCs and the bug-squishing tasks for tomorrow, thought it might be a tad tight. I don't want to promise a release by tomorrow, but, the day after is a definite possibility. I'd still be releasing a demo earlier than I expected, so, hopefully, the feedback that I'll get (I am getting feedback, right? Right?) will point me to issues I need to fix.

Though, I must admit, I'm a tad worried about the length of the demo. I worry that it's too short, and won't leave any impressions. I dunno. I guess I'll see what the playerbase has to say about it, when that time comes.

I am highly tempted to just bring out what I've got, get whatever feedback I can get, and use that feedback for the best demo I can muster within the time that's left for the event.
