Tales of the Reviewer who was not amused.
sunshinesan- 09/29/2010 05:23 PM
Drunken Paladin is one of those games in the RM community that has managed to grab the attention of a number of people few games only dream of having. The praise for this game is strong, not in terms of general consensus, but in terms of the fanbase this game seems to have generated that is filled with zealots that will have none of the criticism that this game actually deserves. How this game managed to form such a strong following is beyond me, for there are major and glaring flaws design-wise, gameplay-wise and writing-wise that seriously hinders me from enjoying this game. Despite all of my initial harsh words about this game, I will say that this is a game of meticulous effort; blood and sweat was put into this project and it shows, though, blood and sweat alone does not warrant any exemption from criticism of its flaws. This game had a lot of effort put into it; it was just that effort is not enough to save it.
First off, I would like to state that this game took me months to complete, and I will try my best to recollect my experiences with it accurately. The reason why it took so long can be summarized by the first paragraph you just read. I have a policy in which I must finish the game before I consider myself adequate enough to review it. It is more or less true that after you traverse though a good bit of a professional game, you can safely say that the quality of it will project throughout the entire project, though in terms of amateur designed RM games, this is not always the case, for a project designer very well can improve in the middle of a project and make the project better and better as time rolls on. This is a burden I carry myself and it has its pros and cons, in this case, the cons definitely weighed more heavily, as this game was consistent in its quality level – quite shoddy.
Design-wise, this game was very inconsistent. An immediate example that I can think of is that at certain points in the game, you can dash, and at certain points in the game, you are forced to crawl-speed walk to traverse through its superfluously decorated and unnecessarily difficult to navigate areas (The mining village took ages to just go from one end to the other, not because of its size, but because of its convoluted passage ways and cliffs). This isn’t on a bases of if you are in a room or not, whether it is in a situation in which running wouldn’t follow proper etiquettes (?) – No, it was completely random, sometimes, you just couldn’t dash for some reason, and other times, you could, and this bugged the hell out of me. This of course, is a design mistake than a design flaw. Word to the wise is – just make the character auto-dash; unless it is something like on a overworld map, in which the scale of distances is altered, auto-dash could mean the difference between a impatient gamer dropping your game or not, and there are a lot of impatient gamers out there.
Speaking of world maps, the world map of this game was ugly. The mapping, i.e. shapes of the islands, where you can and can’t go, was perfectly fine, but it was the selection of the tileset that made it very unpleasant to look at. The world map mixed actual world map tiles with in-town, or rather, when-the-protagonist-is-normal-sized tiles. If there is any way to make tiles from the same tileset clash, this is it. The inconsistency of the sizes of the trees often made it look like a bunch of sequoias randomly spawned amongst a forest of “normal” trees.
The gameplay was boring. There was nothing wrong with it, though I will say that it was on the difficult side, but it was just very generic and lackluster in terms of originality or quirkiness that would otherwise allow battles to intrigue me. You recruit party members as the story progress and each of them has a role, whether it would be healer, caster, status-inflictor, damage-giver, etc. and these characters have their typical helpful skills, with relevant HP and MP count and you go to town with them with the slew of random encounters you will face in this game. When boring battles and difficulty collide, that is when we have a problem. A challenge is only a worthy endeavor when the challenge itself is interesting – picking up spilled toothpicks after I’ve just gotten my nails clipped will never be a fun activity for me no matter how difficult it is.
The biggest problem I had with this game was the game biggest alleged selling point – the writing, or more specifically, the humor. The writing was just not very funny, and often times, was rather contrived and vulgar. Sure, there were a lot of NPCs and even more interactive objects in the game (which is one of the factors that shows intense effort and devotion to detail of the creator) that spewed out original dialogue from the characters, mainly “witty” one-liners from Anebriate, the main character, but none of it is humor, unless you consider two tasteless characters trading crude and unimaginative insults at each other to be funny. I think the entire script of the game can be summarized by, “Fuck you, you horse-shit eating cum bucket filled with turd,” and “No you, you fish-smelling bag of vaginas that fell from the butthole of a bird that was also a bird prostitute!” I’m improvising for a bit, so bear with me. But honestly, this kind of trite and tasteless dialogue will appear every other minute on your screen if you dare to play this game.
None of the characters are interesting, the story was boring, the pacing was repetitive and monotonous, ugh, as you can tell I downright did not like this game. Sorry if this review seemed like the next level of harsh, but after months of arduously trying to inch my way finally to the finish line of this game, it so happened that it was only the bad points of this game that I remember, and they were numerous. I will end this review on a happier side – I’m not saying this game is equivalent to garbage, that space in the trash can is reserved for things like Saint Seiya, but… ugh… this game was just bad… I’m sorry, I’m truly sorry, I can’t end this on a happy note, I tried.

That seems facetious, KA!
Also, I'd like to hear the justification for "this game deserves it's publicity it has achieved." I haven't played the game, but from what I heard it seems rather crass, and that is a turn off for me. The impression I am getting - and this is just my opinion - is that this game appeals rather strongly to the "I'm-a-too-cool-for-school" teenage male crowd with its juvenile vulgarity and drunken escapades, but that same style alienates anyone who is not a crass teenage male.
But that's just what I feel. I haven't actually played it yet.

I kinda miss some of the old school types of misao categories. This game would be a contender for most controversial, due to the love/hate relationship it gets in the community.
With less categories that are for fun, I think it may have lessened voter participation a bit.

Oof, it was expected a review with harsh words, especially one on such a high-profile game, would stir up some controversy.
First of all,
Calunio got the message of my review spot on. I thought that this was a honest and complete piece of work, I just didn't like a majority of it. I consider this to be less harsh than if I were to say that this project didn't have any effort put into it.
On your last sentence, read my response above. EDIT: you seem to have altered your post, I was referring to your statement about how I felt the maker didn't put any effort at all, which is false, because I did my best to fully emphasize that he indeed put a lot of effort into it.
As for why did I mention the fanbase? Because I feel that opinions are relevant in a review for a game, even if they are not mine, and the opinions of the fans of this game clash with mine, so I felt dutiful to at least mention it. Of course, generalization is a bad thing, but I wanted to simplify what I've been "generally" hearing about this game.
Although I am not one to recommend this game, I feel that your criteria is way out of left field. I can see it as a secondary side-effect for not being able to download a game (HD size), but to prioritize game size, especially in this game in age, is pretty absurd. Though everyone has their own opinions, if you feel that an RM game is not worth space, than so be it, but I just don't think it is a very positive mentality in a community like this overall.
A review is constructive if it speaks the truth, at least if it is the truth as the reviewer sees it. Also, I totally disagree with the notion of, "if you can't do any better, keep your mouth shut".

Well, I take this review as "this is a polished game with a lot of hard work put into it, but there's nothing about it that entertains me", which is a reasonable argument for a 2 star review.

I disagreed with this review score fully until the note you decided to end it on. For a 2 star review, you would think few games have done anything worse. I am not sure if a lot of reviewers realize that a 2 star review is seen as among the worst games you can find on this site. Being that I can not justify that as being anywhere near true, I saw this as an attempt to be a corrective review, or a response to the fanbase. Solitayre I think did a better job justifying his score by hitting on some more meaningful game issues.
Then came the one argument I feel anyone can make to say this is a below average game and be fair. You did not enjoy the humor in any way shape or form. Good comedy is different for everyone and one form of art where tastes are so vastly different. I see it as the lone thing that stopped the review from seeming like you wrote your review angry that this game was popular (but I still am not sure due to you mentioning the fanbase). Even then it did not seem like you were fair and your score reflects that of a game where the creator did not even try.
"but in terms of the fanbase this game seems to have generated that is filled with zealots that will have none of the criticism that this game actually deserves." Well, I don't consider myself in this group, because I deconstructed the game a lot in my own review. If beneath it all you really enjoy a game, you can find a ton of flaws and rate it highly. I don't agree with the sentiment that most people who love this game lack the ability to see anything flawed in it.

I was going to download this game and give it a shot to see if I agree or disagree with this review, but then I noticed that the game is over 250 MB, and I canceled the download. I know, I know, "but Corfaisus, MP3s sound excellent and help portray any sort of atmosphere better."
I'm all for making the atmosphere of your scenes as good as they can be, but any game above 130 MB at absolute most is not worth the time. Your game should far below 100 MB anyway. Now, it's not that I'm running out of space on my hard drive or anything, I've still got roughly 274 GB free, but I'm not wasting this much space on a petty RM* game.

@Corfaisus, you can always uninstall the game afterwards. Besides, this game deserves it's publicity it has achieved.
@sunshinesan, Rating the game two stars, although a personal experience and opinion, is not wise. Unless you have a game that is significantly better it's neither worth your time to write a bad review nor ours to read it.
With that being said, let me explain what I call a 'bad review'. This isn't relating to this review or any other specifically. If you complain and add harsh or un-called for comments to your review knowing you haven't or can't do better, that's foolish. Also, all reviews should be positive, constructive criticism not a playground for you to bash the creator's work or the creator himself.
A review is constructive if it speaks the truth, at least if it is the truth as the reviewer sees it. Also, I totally disagree with the notion of, "if you can't do any better, keep your mouth shut".
Uh, yeah, you are definitely allowed to not like a game and explain why you didn't like it in a review even if you have never made any game at all. I have no idea what you are even trying to imply, Carvonica.
I kind of agree with the general gist of this review (as hard to read as it was.) If you don't find this game funny there's not going to be much in it that appeals to you. I already explained my thoughts on this game in pretty great detail though so I'm not going to expound on it here.
I also don't think file size should be much of an issue for a game unless it's north of 500MB or something absurd. You can always delete the game if you don't like it.

Well my edit was to be more fair to how I evaluated your review. I switched me tone to your SCORE reflects that of a game where the creator did not even try. I mean if the game is developed to an extent you can tell the creator put loads of effort into it, I think 2 stars or less is an unworthy score for any such game (unless somehow in the end it reeks of utter incompetence). Likely though, incompetent games aren't the ones you will think a lot of effort went into.

Reviews are made to share your impressions about a game with other people. That's why there no need for you to BE ABLE TO DO BETTER to write a review. That doesn't make the slightest sense. Also, reviews are made to provide the game creator with feedback and criticism. If you only write positive stuff, you'll be missing the point.
You have no idea how crazy you sound right now.
It is not crazy if you believe it to be true. As I previously stated, "With that being said, let me explain what I call a 'bad review'." This is MY opinion and you'll entitled to your own.

I highly doubt a "I'm-too-cool-for-school" teenager would play a RPG game. They'd much prefer the "shoot-em-up" sort of deal.

I really don't want to use extreme examples but they are the best in illustrating my point. No matter how much effort a commoner puts into his attempt to outrun an Olympic track runner, he will never succeed. In this case, "speed" is the variable of interest. When I rate games, "quality" is the variable of interest.

We all know it's your opinion. These posts are all opinions, this review and all the others are opinions. We don't need the disclaimer.
Do you also feel movie reviews are not credible unless the reviewer has made either an independent or mainstream movie themselves? I asked wondering if this opinion stems from some emotional involvement to the community and what we do.
Suneshinesan
I get what you are saying, but aside from the niche humor thing the score seems to exaggerate said incompetence mentioned in your analogy. Drunken Paladin has the skill to stand with the other good game makers, he just didn't make something you enjoyed. I respect that this review is your own.

Yes. It has been proven. People who don't know what they're doing shouldn't do what they do. It's common sense.
unless of course this review is about "Did I like this game or not?". Pulls out my doctorate of liking stuff.
Qualified.
Qualified.
critiquing != thing that is being critiqued.
A game maker makes a game for a wide variety of ppl, ppl in many different fields, who have other talents other than game making. If someone did not enjoy a game, because the game did not fulfill its promise to bring amusement to the player, than that person has every right to voice his opinion about it, regardless if he/she is a developer. And the opinion that would be stated is perfectly legitimate since the game was targeted toward the player, and the player's opinion, say, in a review, would be more relevant the the rest of the game's audience anyway.

You could, but would that be right?I have every right to say the bowl of spaghetti in front of me is shitty if I find it unsatisfactory.
If you cook shitty spaghetti knowing you can't cook any better, why would you eat your poorly cooked spaghetti?I fail to see how this has anything to do with what I said.
If you write a review knowing you can't do any better, why would you bother? To express my opinion.
I kinda relate to the stuff about the humour and how it's written for a core audience and you can't please everyone who reads it or.. not everyone will get the joke exactly the same way.
I dunno though, I respect your difference of opinion but I sort of finished reading that thinking it was more of a annoyed rant than a constructive review on the overall game.

A review doesn't have to be explicitly constructive - I am not going to do favors for the creator, that job is relegated to beta-testers, etc.
My review states my opinion on the overall game - humor, gameplay, etc. My insight in those areas, whether you agree with them or not, is my way of informing the creator and effective, to the community, how this game fared. To the creator, this information could be used to better polish his/her game, and for the community, it could be used to decided whether to play the game or not.

If a game provokes annoyed rants, that's something worth noting.
But yeah, constructive criticism is part of reviews. It's not really a "favor".

People have all their little pieces of advice on the subject, but it rarely amounts to anything. If a review is subjective, there will be those who disagree with it. If it is objective, there will be those who question it.
A review is a review. You play something and talk about it. Throw in a score if necessary. The end.

Wow, what a boring place this would be it it was "the end" and everyone just shut up upon anyone saying anything.

Even with my fair connection, it would take me close to half an hour to download this game. If I get a feeling that it would take me less time to bring it up, give it a shot, get bored of it and delete it than it would to download, that's where I draw the line. How I see it, there's no way to justify any old RM* game being this size. My game used to be roughly 300 MB back in 2006 because I filled it with unnecessary MP3s (Dragonforce, none the less) because I thought it would be "cool". Turns out, that was a terrible idea. So then, over time, I took out as many unnecessary files as I could, using nothing but midis for music, and now I'm down to 30+ MB after sending it through RMTool.
