Link is an archeologist. His goal is to explore the untouched caves that are scattered all throughout Hyrule.

There isn't much laid down for story as the bulk of the work is creating a bug-free ABS. It will feature gobs of custom graphics and possibly even some new music.

Some features include:
Upgradable equipment.
NPC helper fairys.
Jukebox functions(make playlists).
Usage log. For using items, swinging sword, etc. With rewards.
Achievements. For spending rupees and the like. With rewards.
Detailed Bestiary.

Officially on hold / Future plans

It's been unofficially on hold for months now. Nothing much has been added since the last blog so I'm going to switch it over to hiatus. That way I can indicate when I'm working on it again by putting it back into production.

I wish I could change the status of the game to "Long overdue vacation" :3

My "tastes" in game design have changed a lot since I first created this project, and even since I started making serious changes to it. Back then I really wanted to make a Zelda game, now not so much. (Hell, I haven't played a Zelda game since Wind Waker) It's not even just cause people still say "lol fangame" and pass it by for that reason alone. I've even contemplated redoing all the graphics to not be direct copies of Zelda. Still NES, but not rips. Heh, the thought of adding a "Copyright infringement" option that you can turn off to change the graphics crossed my mind. I already have the Zelda graphics, if I created something else I could leave both in and you could switch any time :P That would be a...unique feature, I would say.

The biggest change is my ability to make graphics, which came directly from working on this game. Like, I can actually make stuff now so I really want to start making 100% custom games. Which is exactly what I'm doing right now! On overdrive, I might add. I have 2 games actively being worked on that use all custom resources and there isn't a triforce in sight.

I'm still sticking with 2k3, it's all I know! Plus DynRPG has awesome new features so it's really like 2k3.5 xD

One game is set in the old west. I have immersed myself in old west material like images, wikipedia stuff, and moves. So it will be pretty authentic to the time period. As for gameplay, you will use the arrow keys to move your hero while at the same time using the mouse to target and shoot stuff. The details of gameplay are still being developed so even I don't know how it will turn out. This time around I'm setting a realistic goal and making a short game. With plans on making a story driven, RPG exploration type dealy using the same gameplay and setting.

Here's a couple videos showing what little is created for the mouse shooting game mechanics

The other is set in The Magical Third Dimension(heh unknown reference right there ;P) and uses autostereogram techniques to create real 3D effects. Sounds crazy! I know, but I wouldn't put so much effort into it if it didn't work so well. It's not perfect but when you focus on the right things, it's pretty rad.

I hope to get feedback from people in order to provide useful instructions on how to adjust your eyes to this. I have no problem with it, so my current instruction methods might be lacking.

I only just figured out this technique so it still needs to be perfected. Right now I have 5 levels of depth. Levels 1(furthest away) and 5(up close) are a little blurry so I'm trying to fix that. Next I will try and create different layers within the same object. So instead of the flat cube image moving along the Z axis, parts of it would occupy different depths of the Z axis. That would be epic! Dunno if it's possible, but I'm gonna try. This whole endeavor has been a great exercise in graphic design, so either way this will be a success.

The gamepage for this 3D game has already been created, but it's hidden for now. Again, I'm aiming for a short game. One that uses the 3D effect in very simple ways. I want to test the waters and gauge the response to it before going crazy. Plus I want the game to be available right away when the profile becomes public.

Look out for these games soon! Should be done both by the end of next month, if not the end of the year for sure. Also, keep an eye out for my animated Christmas card entitled "The Twelve Days of Triforce" ^.^ I made it last Christmas Eve but didn't get to release it in time so I decided to release this year at the start of December.

This looks really cool!
Brings back memories of when I was a kid and sucked at games.

EDIT:
Top of page three, sweet.
I liked it. Can't wait for the full release. I can't wait to see how big the full world is when done as your demo was actually pretty big.

Well, I didn't encounter any big bugs while playing, and I didn't do anything to really provoke them. I do have a complaint although it could just be me and my computer, but it opened up in full screen but the bottom half was black for some reason.

Again, good job.

Zelda FTW! Been playing LTTP so im in a zelderis mood. This game dosnt have Wall masters does it? I hate them things.
Hmm, well this demo doesn't have the Wallmasters but I did have them return you to the start in one of the other demos. I could make them bring you to a random place in the dungeon. That might be fun :P

Thanks bro. I have fond memories of the original Zelda days myself. It's something that needs to be replicated, there was never any question ^.^

Thanks man. The world will be huge with tons of side quests for equipment upgrades.

That issue with going fullscreen is your PC. I've gotten that on some video setups and a few times it fixed itself as I tried going in and out of fullscreen. It works fine on my PC 100%. Windowed mode isn't so bad, reduce your desktop screen resolution for a bigger window!

This may be the last demo of this game for a while, maybe even until it's finished. Writing story will be hard, so I might even skip a story.
Do people want a story in this game?

Also: wallmasters dropping you to a random place does sound pretty good... much better then the LTTP ones.
I think even the simplest story would suffice for a Zelda game, so to answer your question, yes I think people will want some form of storyline to follow.

And after playing through this I really enjoyed it, the bridge puzzles are clever and made me actually think for a moment.
It is really staying true to the original series in all respects, while adding its own twists.
Keep this up, this project is really awesome. :]
I have nothing more to say.

Dude, give it a rest.
Link has created something far superior than you could ever hope to make.

You really must be an angst filled teenager. :\

Hmm, yeah. At first I had pretty detailed story in mind but I think I'll try and come up with something simple that isn't cliche. Probably won't even have Ganon. His NES pig graphic is kinda lame anyways haha but thanks for your kind words :) I will most definitely keep this up.

And then there's Davenport, don't pay any attention to him. I sure don't. Anybody can clearly see he is wrong therefore his attempted insults mean nothing. There's no getting through to people like that and more hate/insults will just fan the flames. I'm not so insecure that a comment like that will have any effect.
You're quite welcome!

Also, as long as he doesn't bother you, it won't bother me.
He just really hit a nerve with me, especially after seeing his games(lol).

Jealously at its best!
The Blue Candle isnt burning anything and I cant get further into the demo.
Did i miss something?
I managed to play to the very end of this demo.
Impressive work. This demo has potential to be a great game.
Keep it up! To summarize there were lots of simple and elegant puzzles.
Some of them were block activated, others involved a wide spectrum of candles.
No glitches using the raft. Sailing went pretty smoothly. The flute part where the
lake drained to expose a hidden entrance was cool. A hidden store around the
corner sold many interesting items. What purpose did the book have?
In the last dungeon room you had to defeat a series of monsters that would appear in addition to some moving spikes. Why not convert that into a minigame? Upgrading items and equipment {Tunic, Caps, Blades, Shields, Candles, and Wands.} enabled Link to become much more powerful against new elemental types. Welldone!

I never had any problems and I ran through it several times, it's probably just a fluke. So you got the red candle and was able to burn the red bushes, and now that you have the blue candle you can't burn the red bushes? There is only 1 place to burn blue bushes and they blend in with the other blue ones. You didn't miss anything, if you got the blue candle it should work. I'd say either try a new game or send your save and I'll fix it. Please PM me for further help on this.

Thanks.

The book is used to summon a fairy NPC, it's one of the cooler new features. You have to go into the Sub-Menu and go into the Fairy section to choose a fairy(once you find one). Then when you use the book it gets summoned. It works like the summons in Castlevania Curse of Darkness.

The last room is something I made up in a rush. That type of puzzle will show up again. Also, I didn't even put much focus into making puzzles. They will be much better and more inventive(i hope) in the final game.
I'm looking forward to this one's completion. The Zelda games were the best of the NES/SNES era.
Are you still looking for testers?

Agreed. 1000%

This game is over half done basically. All the hard work is pretty much complete in creating the mechanics, now I just gotta make some kind of story and stitch together some dungeons.

Maybe I'm mental, but I can't figure out how to leave the first overhead map screen. I tried to bring up the status screen again to see if there was something I need to do there, but it seems I can't bring up the status screen once I leave the initial cave. Btw I recommend not having SHIFT bring up the status screen; keep things joystick-friendly.

Hmm, I'm trying to think of what version of the game is up now. Is it on the beach? after you pick up the bombs? If so, you have to bomb the wall between the two statues near the top-middle of the map. There's a crack in the wall if you look close enough. If you need any further help just PM me and I'll guide you along!

What do you mean by status screen? The main menu? or maybe the status section of the sub-menu? Shift isn't used to bring up a menu or anything. On the field it's used for items and once you open the menu with 1 it's used to switch between the main and sub menus. There are times when you cannot open the usual menu(with 1) but instead you get a menu that allows you to changes weapons/equips. There is never any need to go into the menu to progress in the game. If I remember correctly, this is the demo where you find an item and use it on the map to progress. That's about it.

As far as (not)having Shift bring up the status screen, well, it doesn't exactly do that. It's a main button in battle and a secondary button in the menu. Are you suggesting that the buttons used in the game should be available on the joystick? is that what joystick-friendly means? I think I've done that. When you use a joystick(well, when I use a joystick) with RM2k3 the buttons are predefined. On my joystick it sets 2 buttons as accept and 3 buttons as SHIFT. Even if you use a program to map keyboard keys to the joystick you would still have to use the keyboard a little bit for this game so the way it's setup you will have have quick access to all necessary buttons in battle.

Ah, sorry, I meant 1 to bring up the status screen (not SHIFT). On my joystick, no buttons are mapped to that by default.

It turns out I was mental after all. I didn't see the bomb bag there on the screen lol. After that, no major problems getting to the end of the demo. Although I lost the ability to use my sword somewhere along the way. I think it was when I equipped the first fairy? Not sure. Had to rely solely on the candle for combat from there on out.

Anyway, cool stuff! It definitely preserves that old-school Zelda feeling, and it's refreshing to play an action adventure once in awhile instead of all these slow-paced RPGs. Also, I commend you for adding in your own ideas instead of just doing a remake. If it were only a remake, I wouldn't be interested in playing it, but since there are brand new maps and brand new puzzles etc, I am.

edit: I was gonna suggest a way to fix the problem of how when the player is at the edge of the screen and turns around, the new map doesn't get triggered (he has to step forward first, then go back), but the fix involves editing RGSS...and it looks like you used RM2k3 for this! That's crazy.

Good to hear you made it to the end! About how long did it take you to reach the boss fight?

There are some things that aren't 100% stable yet. Having your sword disabled being one of them. Usually you can fix that, though, by changing to a different sword. I'm not sure it it's in the demo, but you can press * on the keypad to run an event that should enable the sword again. With all the of the events going on it's hard to figure out why it does that some times. All I can do is give the player a "cheat code" to reset some switches.

I actually considered making it a full RPG, or even just RPG boss battles. I still might do that in some way. I like the idea of turning Zelda1 into an RPG. Your items and heart containers would be your RPG skills/stats; your tunic is a "job" and alters your skills/stats.

I agree about remakes; they should offer so much more than the original :D

I would like to encourage people to submit their own ideas for puzzles/dungeons. I could use any help in that area!

The problem you mention is fixed, I think, in the current project. That's an easy fix anyway ^.^:

Thanks for all your comments! Let me know how the new demo plays when I release it sometime soon(less than a week?)

I think it took me 45 minutes maybe? Or maybe it was longer. I did get stuck temporarily here and there, but eventually found a way to progress.

One suggestion I have is to make the enemies flash red (or any color) when they are hit. That was the one obvious thing lacking from the good ol' Zelda feel. I'm excited about this project :)
