The year is 2011, and a terrible infection has spread across the United States.

The infection was airbourne as well as highly contagious. Symptoms were similar to the flu, including high fevers, vomiting, coughing, as well as a general weakening of the immune system. Due to this epidemic, the US began to collapse. Hospitals were overrun with infected patients, plants and livestock began to perish, which led to the economy's failure. All of the military bases were facing difficulties trying to quarantine the disease, even failing to stop the infection from spreading within their own ranks. There seemed to be no answer, and no cure...

But the worst was yet to come.

It was roughly a week before those who were unfortunate enough to become infected began to show enormous amounts of hostility to family, freinds, and strangers alike. This single infection brought down the entire USA from the inside, as its own citizens were murdering each other out of an unexplained rage.

It's been four weeks since the infection began. Those who were neither killed nor infected have held out and survived in shelters in cities, towns, and rural areas using any means necessary.

Now, follow the story of two survivors as they attempt to survive Hell on Earth.

Mini-Game or Action Based Combat?

I've come to a point in Infection, where I'm really trying to decide on a gameplay element for Jonathan's final flashback.
I don't want to use the standard turn-based combat, I want it to be different. Because after this point I'll probably implement the same type of gameplay for the rest of the final flackbacks(the third in the character's series)

So, I'm looking into mini-game options that include some type of combat, since you'll be fighting or avoiding infected, and turn based just isn't going to work here because I don't want any stats, level, items, healing, etc to be a factor.
Another thing I'm considering is just setting up a simple action based combat system with melee, all on screen fighting.

I'll be looking into a few different options, and whatever I don't use now I'll probably save and use for another flashback sequence, so no harm no foul at this point.
I'm up for suggestions of what seems like an appropriate mini-game for a game like Infection, and if you want anymore details on what exactly will be happening I'm more than happy to share.

And that leads me to my final point;
What are your thoughts on mini-games? Especially ones that change the gameplay style like it will here?
And are mini-games a must for RPG style games? Do they help break up the monotony of the turn-based combat?

(Keep in mind this is only for a short segment of the storyline, but I'd still like to hear people's opinions."

I originally was just going to post this on the gamepage through a comment, but I don't post that many blogs and this seems worth it. :)
Because this is to everyone on RMN, not just my subscribers.

Any chance of making this available without the RTP?

Any chance of making this available without the RTP?
Like without having the rm2k RTP to play?

I'm looking into doing this right now, so I'm gonna message you to see if it works.

Entire game: Run away from zombies, melee anything that isn't crazed or hulking, big battles equal having no gun users defend and everyone else use crowd control. GREAT GAME

Sounds like a great game to me!
Dude you should make your game independent from having the rtp 2000.

I probably will have it independent some day, but for now I've found it easier and much less a hassle for everyone else when the RTP is included.
This feels like a single player, offline version of Dead Frontier. Subscribed.

Between DF and some other mmos, open world type games were my main inspiration!
Thanks!
I'm going to guess that you're a Doomer, InfectionFiles, because that looks like the often-used Shadow Warrior Uzi I see in so many Doom mods! Looks very cool though!

I certainly do love Doom! :D
And thanks for your nice comment.
I've been notified I don't update often enough(NewBlack :P) and I actually do update the game, I just don't comment/blog about it, felt having the game on the front page was enough.
But to the subscribers, and to all others out there, I just updated the download with a few bug fixes, balancing and even added a new quest!
So, if you played the most recent version lately then this update won't be a big change(besides the quest addition) so it's totally up to you to download.

A big change I did add to the last update that I was excited about was interchangeable items, such as weapons and clothing.
Now this doesn't seem like a badass feature, quite the opposite. pretty standard.
But for those that have played in the past you'll know that item changing was locked and you had set stuff. well, no more!
But what excited me most is that when you change clothes it actually shows on your sprite!
There isn't much clothes or weapons available yet, but they'll come!

Stay tuned, and check for download updates if you are really interested. :)

This looks very cool. My only concern is that the RM2000 DBS may feel a little odd in a game like this. Suppose I'll have to give it a try when I have time and find out!

Thank you!
When you do try it out, I hope you have fun.

As for the DBS, I agree with you. A turn-based zombie game is abit funky in terms of what the genre offers.
But, I think it works good for what it is tbh. :) Maybe you'll agree.
I just really don't have the time/skills to implement a great shooting system I'd like for a zombie game.

EDIT: this is the third version of the game Infection that I have worked on, the first being my very first EVER rpgmaker game, and the second(which used to be here) was my better attempt at the game.
And now this is my third remake, and as I go I just get more educated with the program, so maybe someday down the road I'll have a even better version of the game with a badass shooting battle system. ;]
Very nice game, UPRC! Impressive... :)
Sub'ed btw... ;)

So is Adrian Kessler immune? I haven't played yet, but that's how these games usually work, right?

You're correct sir, those left alive are pretty much either immune or really lucky and were isolated from large populaces.
The infection wasn't airborne though, it is only passed through physical contact, so those who had no contact(of any kind) with an infected will be safe.
this is like the millionth time i've seen this on the frontpage.
