The future of Necropolis:
Jude- 01/01/2013 03:22 PM
You may have noticed that I've recently changed the game status to canceled. This is only true for the RPG Maker version of Necropolis, which I'll leave on RMN for at least the near-term. While it might sound strange, I think I can reach a larger audience if Necropolis becomes a commercial product, so that is my current intention.
To reach this goal, Necropolis production has migrated to MonoGame/XNA and is being re-built from the ground up. Initial target platform is the PC but MonoGame is very portable so other platforms are likely if the PC version is successful.
This does add a lot of development time, but it is also an opportunity to re-evaluate everything about the original version. A lot of sweeping changes have been made to the mechanics and structure based on feedback and also my own hindsight--changes that were either tedious or very difficult to do in RM2K3.
At some point I may post a breakdown of these changes. However, they'll be posted at my new blog rather than on RMN. Given the (appropriate and correct, IMO) policy RMN has on commercial games, I have recently started a Wordpress site. It is still in its infancy as I have zero experience in web design, html, CSS, etc; but it will come along in time. Below is the new blog, for those who are interested:

if you had a tumblr, that would be cool. wouldn't mind following the progress through that. also yeah, stepping stone in progression. i respect that.
goodluck dude. rm community is a tiny pond, and with a game like yours i know it can be appreciated a lot more if you expand it. you have a great little game, and i am glad you're trying to get it to reach other people beyond this very-very small part of the world wide web.
people with a clever and unique game, it is wonderful to see them take it a step further.

I have also setup a Twitter account if you can follow that, although I haven't used it yet: @NecropolisRPG
Glad to hear you are continuing the development of Necropolis. It's certainly better than a lot of other commercial games that I've played so far. Anyway, I fully support your decision and good luck on getting this game the your level of satisfaction.
I can see what you're getting at with the switch to making this a commercial endeavor.
Even though you'll be putting up a paywall barrier, the venues for advertising are naturally larger in the commercial world and many more eyes will be on Necropolis, even if only for a glimpse. Remaining only an RM game, your audience is limited to those who dabble in hobbyist RMing, further limited to those who decide to try your game instead of one of the established staples.
It's an interesting decision, and one I should consider when I get that far down the road.

I IS SO SAD!!!! Not so much that the game will cost something to play now, but more because it's going to take THAT MUCH LONGER to get done!
Good luck though! I'm sure the final product will be worth it!

I really appreciate the work you already put into this project
and dont want to be discouraging, but i like to add my 2 cents:
i can understand the change from rpgmaker to a more mature developing
platform. what i dont understand is the switch to commercial, do you
really think many people nowadays will spend their money on a retro
styled oldschool rpg?
anyway, its your decision and i wish you good luck!

Even though I really liked the Necropolis demo, I have to say that I don't think the game is good enough to go commercial. Yes, I realise that there's a lot of (so called) professional AAA commercial garbage.
The graphics are the strongest point in the game since they faithfully recreate the 8bit NES style and are well drawn. The battle system is pretty fun and allows for some customization (even if limited) and personal strategies, but it doesn't really bring anything new, it's been done before, which doesn't mean I wouldn't happily play 50 hours around it. The music is good and also recreates the 8bit feel but as you said yourself: you are still learning about composing. The story while humorous at times, is one of the weakest points in the game (in the demo at least), it's fun and lighthearted with some classic games references, but there is too much text (for an 8bit NES style game), and it could be better written.
It is a good game by RPG Maker standards, by comparison it's one of the best RPG Maker games I've played, but only due to the ammount of work, details and original resources you made. I don't know if everyone else thinks that way.
Despite what I've said I liked Necropolis, I just wanted to give my opinion.
Will you change some aspects of the game now that it's a commercial release?
Anyway, best of luck out there!

??????????????????
no
the narrative is great and the dialogue is good
it might be """NES Styled game" but i dont think that should put any kind of arbitrary limit on the "text"
PS: it's a good game because it's a good game, and looks/sounds great to boot. it's not good because of the "amount of work put in". that is a really silly thing to say
