Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

Anyone wana tell me how to get to...
No Man's Land 3, Under Stynx 2

Hmm, noticed that Jaymonius managed to get the track into his playthrough. I wonder what he had to do to remove the mute. If it is anything complicated like having to contact the company directly, I probably won't do it just for a fan video on a boss of a non-commercial game.

They probably just missed him or something.

Alternatively, you can download the video and the music won't actually be muted. (if the video is muted).
Hehe, I think the reason was I moved really fast in crediting Avex Entertainment with the other videos that had the same music.

Either that or they're blind as piss, I could just go and re-upload the video I bet they'd not notice it, heh heh.
I'm having a big problem with the game.
After the first fight and the scene following that with the Scott and the Violet and all that good stuff, I get a "not implemented" error. A whole bunch of them, actually.

This shit can only be described as bananas.

I'm having trouble figuring out a reason why. I remember that it worked perfectly for me when I tried out the demo.
Why would I crash for going into the map screen?
'Not Implemented' is usually attributed to the MP3 Music. I'm not sure what exactly causes it though.

Very strange, mine got muted the moment that they were uploaded, and on their "copyright" page it says that just mentioning where it came from wasn't sufficient.

"# I gave credit in the description. Isn't that enough?

No. Giving credit does not give you authorization to upload the content.
"

Oh well, just a bit bummed since the sound does make the Shade Bit ( Shadow Ultima ) better.

I heard Neok mention this when I asked to actually replace the boss music in the folder. However, been trying to do it myself and I can't seem to. A hint would be appreciated.
I think I know the way to change the music in the game. You see what you do is, you have to make a music file in the format Its a WAV in ACM Waveform. I make my bgms in that format when using Cool Edit, if you wanna try that then go ahead, just when you paste the music in his game, the name of the boss theme must match word by word when putting it in.

As for not implemented or whatever, my theory behind that one is because you may have another program that doesn't like rm2k3 when running at the same time. I had that experience when running my zsnes and rm2k3 once and it did that half-a million windows of some error.

I'm not quite understanding what you said here. Guess I should specify my problem. The music file that appears to be the one that's blocked is 'Fgt (Special B) MOVE - Blast My Desire.mp3'. What I originally thought was to rename this to something else (usually adding a - in front ), and rename another boss battle track in its place, and just switching it back when I'm done.
To me what you're suggesting is to create new music files, but that's why I would appreciate some clarification. Thanks for the response.
Use the program Cool Edit to change the format of the wav to ACM Waveform. I don't know where to get Cool Edit anymore, so you'd have to look that one up a little bit.

What if the music file happens to be in .MP3 format?

Doubt it. I tried to play the game without any programs in the background, but still no go.
This is really quite strange.

Either that, or RPG Maker doesn't like the bgm you're using, I recall one experiment I was playing FF8's Edea's battle theme and my rm2k3 freaking hated that thing and gave me the not implemented thing.
Seems like I"m pretty much stuck if the music file is in .MP3. All of the converters from MP3 to Wav seem to only convert a percentage of it unless you buy it.

No Man's Land 3, Under Stynx 2
After you beat the game, return to Stynx and go to the prison areas. Talk to people and eventually you'll unlock No Man's Land 3. Go through that, and at the end, you'll see a man who will unlock Below Stynx for you.

Where do you find the Ultima mode, by the way? Do you get it by defeating the ultimate bonus boss? I'm pretty sure it's the only mode I'm missing...

Anyway, last storyline question I swear:
My previous questions have been resolved, but now I have a new one: What, exactly, is the Orbital Prison, and what in the world is Nightmare? My guess is that, if the previous version's backstory still stands, then it was a colony that, for whatever reason, was launched into space (Why and how is another question -- the notes in level 1 seem to imply that it was an accident somehow), therefore leapfrogging the Altered A.I.L.A. revolt. Aila is the "little girl" that is described by one of the notes in level 1. (Perhaps the other people in the core are variants as well?) When the prison breaks down and crashes for some reason (perhaps due to Nightmare), she fights her way out of the core and escapes into the now-devastated world, and sees what the other A.I.L.A.s were driven to. This sparks her desire for revenge, and the rest is history. I have no clue how accurate I am though; I may have to re-read the notes. And is the person described as having a hideous face and being pacified by darkness Trauma? (What *is* he, exactly? Why does he randomly mutate and sprout creepy tentacle growths?)

I'm also confused as to what Below Stynx and the Controller are, but I'm willing to let that slide as just random gameplay stuff.

Anyway, my thoughts on the postgame is that it felt kind of hollow. I don't know why I felt that way... I guess it might have been because during the actual game, we have tons of interesting plot and character developments on a near-constant basis, but then we never get any of that again. Which is odd, because I didn't feel that way about Last Scenario, which also had massive optional content. I think it's because Last Scenario was more plot- than character-driven, unlike this game, which is very character-centric. Also, Last Scenario's optional content could be explored *before* fighting the final boss, and many other JRPGs I've played use the same formula. I think it gives more resolution, knowing that you'll get the last bit of story after your dungeon crawling. Whereas here, the entire postgame is just dungeon crawling. The main characters never speak again, and there's little, if any, further plot development. My suggestion for Variant is this: Have the bonus dungeons and bonus bosses have greater ties to the overall plot (like with the Underwater Facility and shadow character battles in the original), making them more than just the residence of a Giant Space Flea From Nowhere bonus boss for you to test your awesome gear on. I think that having more of the optional dungeons be accessible before beating the game is a good idea, too, instead of dumping everything on the player at once, which can be a little overwhelming and can get tiring after a while.

Honestly though, I don't know why I got that hollow feeling. Maybe it's just a bout of depression. (I get those sometimes)

Also, why are the bonus characters so horribly nerfed? None of them start with limit breaks, and all of them except Lavitz have only half the total abilities of the main characters. Obtaining them at level 1 I will accept, but giving them a paltry amount of gimmicky abilities just makes them useless. (A real pity, too; some of them look like they'll have great stat growths)

Well, that's all I have for now. Still a great game, I'll probably write a review after I beat the final bonus boss.

Edit: On a completely unrelated note, I found a typo. In the cutscene "Awakened Celia", Celia says "bought" instead of "brought" at one point.

Edit 2: In the secret area of the Jackal Labs (the place with the computer that foreshadows the existence of the Underwater Facility), does anyone know if it's possible to open the two doors that are locked? I wouldn't be so suspicious if they didn't have blue arrows over them, implying that there's some way to open them... (Perhaps the Ultima mode is through there? :o)
Regarding the Ultima Mode, if you check my "Behemoth Hard Mode" video, you'll see that I had it equipped. You can also see that I haven't discovered the Core yet, and my levels were lower than all my other videos. What that basically means is that I acquired it way earlier than Orbital Prison. In fact if I remember correctly, it was one of the first level 4 Modes I got.

Also looking back in one of my oldest saves, I had it even before beating the final story boss of the game, so it could be acquired during story mode.

After the first fight and the scene following that with the Scott and the Violet and all that good stuff, I get a "not implemented" error. A whole bunch of them, actually.

I've personally never seen this error before, so I can't help you. Sorry. The others seem to know what this is though.

If I recall, it should be in Underwater Facility 2, somewhere in that never-ending water maze...

Orbital Prison story

Orbital Prison will be explained more in-depth in AAV. But just so you know,

The little girl mentioned is not Aila. If you want to know the little girl's identity, you can find her cell somewhere in Orbital Prison's core, as mentioned in the notes. As far as I know, no one's ever found her cell, not even the testers. Missileboater knows something about how to get in there though ;).

Mmh, alright, I certainly did let the plot slide in the postgame (mostly because I just wanted to get done). There used to be a side story to Below Stynx as well, but that got cut. I'll try to get more side-quest stuff like this involved in an earlier stage.

Bonus chara's were nerfed to hopefully give an incentive for ppl to level them up and unlock their skills. Guess it backfired huh?
Ugh, Underwater Facility 2? :( Which maze is it in, the second teleporter from the left? I admit that I probably didn't get everything there... (looping areas make me want to pull my hair out)

(spoilers about bonus characters)
Anyway, no, general nerfing doesn't bother me so much as the fact that they have half as many abilities as the main cast (many of which are horribly gimmicky), making them useless. If you game them six skills instead of three, like the main cast, then they would be worth levelling up and using. Being able to unlock them before the end of the game (as well as an inclusion of leaked experience -- not sure if that's possible in RM2k3's engine though) would help too.

Seriously, giving Aila the awesome skills she has when you fight her (Blast and Pulsar, plus an actual Exceed ability) would have been so cool. :o (And Silvra is hardly "a magician who manipulates the tri-elemental" when she can only use one spell)

And that's a pity about the postgame. I don't blame you though, writing is really hard, and I'd know I'd probably be burnt out by that point too. :( Perhaps you could try to pace yourself better next time, and make sure you'll have enough energy to do everything. How you'd go about doing that I'm not sure, though.

(Also, ooh, secret area! Please don't tell me you permanently miss it once you fight Nightmare... ;_; My guess now is that the little girl's Indy, by the way)

....

He did let me in on a little hint after the challenge, however I can't make much of it in the time being ...

If you will allow it to be known to the community, I guess either one of us can say it. But from what I did so far, I managed to get the clue due to I having a save right before the final boss. I think we can safely eliminate the choices (b) and (c) right now, as they don't seem as possible as (a) is. However, the number of things that this clue can refer to is a lot. There are plenty of the things in Orbital Prison 1, and one in Orbital Prison 3. Not saying (b) nor (c) are completely out of the picture, as bizarre things can appear in that area, but it's just my guess for now.

Besides, trying to get to the point where I can record the Orbital Prison bosses ( including the full power behemoth ) at levels 50+, instead of 85+, pretty sure not too many people found those that interesting.
Although, I think I have to play through the game again, because at my current state I just don't have enough credits for the essential battle items, and there isn't a way to make credits without gaining EXP.
Unless I reset my levels with my post super-boss save (675k credits), but I'll think of something about that eventually.

...

Ah, I remember now. I was lost in that damn maze for about a good 20-30 minutes. Although, it was one of the first things I found. At that point I was trying to get to the right and bottom if I remember correctly. I personally won't recommend it that much if you're getting it for real use. Only reason I had that on Erin was because in the challenge, she had barely enough HP to survive a X-Devastation ( she was really close to dying at one point, which would've been bad ). So it was best for me to give her something with +HP/Rnd, and Ultima just happened to be in the top of the list with no negative X/Rnd. But, if you're doing it for a collection, good luck.
Haha Underwater Facility 2 was the dungeon I played yesterday and the maze was the 1st that I wandered to. Was wandering for good 'ol 15-20 minutes and managed to find all the items in there, but just couldn't find the exit. Then when I thought I found the exit, I actually found the entrance instead lol.

Eventually I solved the rest before coming back, in which this time I managed to find the exit within 5 minutes :)
