Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

By the way, Neok, in case you're interested, this might be the reason why the GRD stat didn't work:

http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/7200/?post=212351#post212351

GRD and MND (which are DEF and INT respectively) are basically incorrectly labelled, so it isn't really a bug. Read the link to understand more about it and maybe try it out :) GRD stat should then probably work, I hope.

(This means Demon King Cradle -500 GRD should work effectively if this theory is true. Mwahaha...)

So that applies to everything in the engine? Even equipment stats?
It's just that tab in the program. Doesn't apply to anything else.

Oh, good. By the way, would someone be so kind as to upload a video showing the all of the exceed abilities in the game?
Yeah, I was waiting for that. I think someone was working on it and then nothing happened.

Go Ness!
Yay! Lavitz has Swallow Dance now.

I seem to have run afoul of that darkside bug though. Sometimes, just before the battle starts, I get an error saying that some module cannot be found (or something like that) and the game crashes. If I reload I'm generally fine though.

(And agh, Kugar's darkside was so hard! Kugar is just such a terrible character in general -- how is he supposed to be used? All of his attacks deal pitiful damage, even Saint Sword (which doesn't seem to get stronger with low HP). I had to constantly juggle SPD Crush, HP Crush, and MND Crush (which doesn't seem to do anything...) on the darkside. Battle took forever. ;_; On that note, what's the difference between Saint Sword and Saint Spear? Does it just deal more damage?)

Edit: About T-Bot II's ultimate weapon, shouldn't the ellipses come before "Peace", not after, since it's supposed to be finishing the phrase from Tinderbot's ultimate weapon? ("Love and...") By putting the ellipses after, it looks like there are two incomplete phrases instead of a complete phrase split into two halves.

Edit 2: Just beat Silvra's darkside. I have now officially beaten everything the game has to offer! I really should have fought some of those battles beforehand, some of the ultimate weapons could have been really useful. Kind of a pity ultimate weapons are so useless, since they're outclassed by dual syncs like CRISIS and Tear of All Ocean. By the time you get them, you'll probably already have those, so they kind of pale in comparison. The "abilities always activated" ones are quite useful, though. (Outer Scripture was the only one I used over Tear of All Ocean for Gray) And yeah, the bonus characters are quite useless compared to the main cast, other than Aila and maybe Tinder. I really think that they should have been unlocked during the main game, since some of them, like a medic with Charge, are very useful for the early/mid-game, but are outclassed by the main cast by the postgame. Also, Lavitz is just far, far too frail to be of any use whatsoever. Violet is better anyway since she can deal more hits per turn on average. Aila's Nova is also awesome but impractical -- even with Millennial Memory, in the time it takes you to do a Charge -> Shine -> Nova sequence, you could have done Pulsar -> Ray -> Pulsar, which does more damage on average. Pulsar and Ray by themselves, however, are quite powerful.

The devices were godsends though, Regen Circuit especially. I hate long dungeon crawls without post-combat recovery, and one of the reasons I liked Erin so much was because she could heal the party to full every random encounter. I can see why you cut them though, some are quite gamebreaking (Energy + Spirit Circuit is a deadly combo -- EX abilities right off the bat)
Whoops! Totally forgot about my EX exhibition after I had basically finished recording all the main cast. Here it is:

Tell me if I screwed anything up. I'll go ahead and get started on the recording for the secret characters' video now. I don't like leaving my projects unfinished, but sometimes things do distract one (stupid minecraft...).

I've been told that I broke your game in the past, Neok, but this time I did it for real. Enjoy those Shooting Stars of Doom at the end. I was quite stunned after the first one.

Otherwise, I hope it meets with everyone's expectations.
First of all... wtf, so many ex abilities I didn't know about and
funny ending, great vid ;)
Fist of all, wow. Just wow. o_o (Also, the ending was hilarious -- what could have caused that overflow error, though? Buster Cannon displayed fine... Perhaps Neok could explain.) What were your levels/equipment? :o Oh and for the secret character vid, what will you do for Tinder? Using the Zero-System would actually be counter-productive, since his EX's damage increases proportional to his HP.

Anyway, why did you include Providence? It doesn't do anything other than give those boost statuses, so it can't be amplified in any way. Or were you just including it because you were including every other EX attack? On a related note, why did you include Sniper, Ravage, and Voltage Dial as well? Were you simply trying to use as many abilities as possible?

Also, if you're just looking for big numbers, I'm pretty sure that First Aid actually heals slightly more than Second Aid...

(Oh, I'm not sure if this is notable, but you have Lavitz in your party while showing off Temporal Stasis, Orbital Assault, Indignant Variati, Shooting Star, and Ether Breaker. Since you split the videos to avoid spoilering the secret characters, maybe you shouldn't have included her...? I dunno if it's really that important.)

@ Sun: Have you noticed how certain characters only have five skills instead of six? They can learn a sixth skill if you hunt down the corresponding Joker (every one will ask for a certain character) and fork over a few shards.

My levels should be largely irrelevant as I just bought enough enhancers to max the relevant stats to 999, though they range anywhere from 25-85. Hell, my main party ranges from about 68-85 right now. My Indy is really low level even though I tried to level her some and my Erin is way over leveled as she was used to help power-level about half of the secret characters before I got access to the devices.

For Tinder, I planned to do it with both Zero Systems and X-Systems in order to see if the passive boost is actually any good or if it's better to just toss it aside for the Zero System.

Finally, as for gear I'll go ahead and cross-post it from the video description:

Sync - Zero System
Sync - Zero System
Armor - Celestial Sphere/Ace Blazer
Gear - *Element* Bolster
Mode - Chaos

For the bolsters, I used whichever one was relevant to the character at hand. WPN moves got Flame Bolster while any moves with inherent elements got a bolster to match.

It's just as you said. By including it, I covered every EX move in the main cast.

I included those, each for a different reason despite the fact that they're not EX moves.

Sniper was included as it was Erin's best damaging move.

Ravage was included because of it getting it's own boosts via Dread's ultimate weapon and that interested me. I wanted a best case scenario to see what it was capable of doing with the best possible base damage +%. Using his ultimate and an X-System, it would be diminished a good bit from what the video shows, but you'd need nothing more than to gain 1 EX & 3 AP per turn to have him use it every round. Not to mention that it would be ideal to keep Dread at full health with that setup as opposed to as near death as you can get him. That also lets you give your good gear to other characters who can actually utilize it much better than Dread could.

Voltage Dial I was just curious about. I wanted to see how that compared to Jake's Temporal Stasis. Temporal Stasis was stronger, but only beat it out by like 40k or so.

Mostly it was just to see if Ravage and Voltage Dial would be a bit more efficient than their EX moves. Which it seems that they might just be depending on the situation.

Gah, figures that would be the case. Oh well. If I had known at the time, then that would have been made an exception as well, like Ravage, Voltage Dial, and etc.

Heh, whoops! Totally missed that fact. Well, I did originally just try to break the damage cap with Violet so that's probably why I left Lavitz in and forgot. I've actually already got a video of her with the above gear doing Swallow Dance. It does seem to take a solid second place so far. If Shooting Star's last hit was basically 100k, then they'd be roughly equal damage wise.
My levels should be largely irrelevant as I just bought enough enhancers to max the relevant stats to 999
o_o

*is speechless*

Ah, yes, I believe I remember you talking about how gamebreaking double Zero-Systems would be, since they effectively triple damage. Interesting.

Oh, and, uh, by the way, GRD Crush doesn't do anything, as far as I know. RM2k3 bug -- the Defense stat doesn't factor in against attack-based skills. In my experience, MND Crush doesn't seem to do anything either. :(

But again, wow. It's a bit of a pity that those setups are too impractical to use in actual battles (though I find the idea of one-shotting the final superboss with a single Shooting Star amusing. :D), but I do find these kinds of "push the battle system to the limit" experiments fun nonetheless. :)

(Still, I do wonder why Buster Cannon displayed fine even though it clearly did over 100k damage, yet Shooting Star didn't despite dealing similar damage...)
Eh, best to cover all bases. Plus, I need something to do to whittle down my HP for Zero System. It's boring just guarding.

I actually think you could get the trick to work on the final superboss. It wouldn't be too hard to get a turn off while near death in that fight. ;) Sure it wouldn't be a perfect attack, but in theory less than perfect would still be totally ridiculous for some characters. Getting the necessary boosts might take a bit of work, but it could be done.
Oh, an idea that just occurred to me: Burstfire Barrage is undeniably underwhelming, but what about Risky Gambit? Like Dread's Ravage, it's boosted by his ultimate weapon, and can be used continuously. Maybe try substituting a Zero-System for Catastrophe and see what happens?

It would be interesting to see Celia's Ether Blast, too, since that can also be used every turn with the right setup. It would be good to compare against Ether Breaker.
i finally cleared the Underwater Facility! Got all the way to the start of Chapter 8.

The Green vs. Blue fights were unexpected, and harkened back to the Blue vs. Green fights from Alter AILA. That was one thing sorely missed from this game, but the fact that you reversed them was brilliant. Kudos.

One thing that bugs me is the constant need to un-equip and re-equip. >< Other than that, I'm almost done with this game!
Hmm, I guess I'll up Burstfire Barrage's dmg count and.. make Kugar stronger?

On that note, what's the difference between Saint Sword and Saint Spear? Does it just deal more damage?

Yeah, mostly just more dmg.

I suppose you have a point. Alright, I'll change it.

I have now officially beaten everything the game has to offer! I

Congratz :). Thanks a lot for playing it all the way through.

I've been told that I broke your game in the past, Neok, but this time I did it for real. Enjoy those Shooting Stars of Doom at the end. I was quite stunned after the first one.

Hahaha wow.. I'm not 100% sure about this, but the most likely explanation that comes to mind, is that the amount of dmg Violet does on the last hit goes over what can be stored in a variable, so it doesn't even register (the maximum dmg is 99,999, but the max number that can go into a variable is 9,999,999. Which implies that if there wasn't a dmg or variable limit, Gray's Buster Cannon dmg count would be somewhere btw 100k and 10 million, while Violet's Shooting Star technically hits for over 10 million on the last hit. :P

Do you guys think I should nerf Violet's Exceed? For balance's sake, that'd make sense, but I'm kinda amused over how she's strong enough to break everything, including the game.

Also, if you're just looking for big numbers, I'm pretty sure that First Aid actually heals slightly more than Second Aid...

Actually they heal the same. Second Aid just adds a revive on top of healing.

Oh, and, uh, by the way, GRD Crush doesn't do anything, as far as I know. RM2k3 bug -- the Defense stat doesn't factor in against attack-based skills. In my experience, MND Crush doesn't seem to do anything either. :(

It works on enemies. It's just when they attack you that it doesn't work.

Story Fights

Back when I wanted to make this a game with multiple endings, I was going to have

Leon VS Erin

be the final battle of the bad ending. Oh, what could've been..

post=ARPerson
Whoops! Totally forgot about my EX exhibition after I had basically finished recording all the main cast. Here it is:

Wow, what the fuck is Gray anyway?
Well for Kugar, how is he supposed to be used, exactly? Is he supposed to be a squishy wizard like Celia and Silvra (whose damage output is also subpar compared to other bonus characters)? If so, he fails at it, since his spells deal pitiful damage compared to them. Tri-Lance and Ether Blast can deal at least twice as much damage as Light Pillar, and Saint Sword's damage seems really random, sometimes dealing less damage than Light Pillar. I suppose he has more health than the other wizard-type characters, but not by much.

Back when I wanted to make this a game with multiple endings, I was going to have
Leon VS Erin

be the final battle of the bad ending. Oh, what could've been...

What could have been indeed. :o That fight would have been so heartbreaking. How would the storyline lead up to it, though, if
Erin's in your party for most of the game?

On a gameplay balance note, however,
Erin as a solo character is really terrible, since she cannot deal any significant damage. Her rifle is pathetic. It worked in the original Alter AILA since she was godly in all areas, including damage, but here, where she's pathetic offensively, it just makes the battle take forever. I mean really, 45000 HP, and your only form of offense is a rifle attack that does maybe 800 damage if you're lucky? Are you really just supposed to chuck Psycho/Lightning Rounds until he dies? Because that's what I did for both fights. So if Erin's playable in Variant, I would recommend against any more solo battles with her. Medics =\= self-reliant units.

Oh, and something that I just wanted to say but forgot:
I'm very glad you made Leon and Erin's relationship much less explicit. I really dislike romance in stories that I read (during lovey-dovey romance scenes, I tend to just roll my eyes and say "Yes that's nice, but can we continue with the plot now please?"), and the relationship in the original Alter AILA was so cliche and romantic that I wanted to gag. I appear to be the exception rather than the rule when it comes to opinion of romantic subplots in stories, though...

Anyway, as for nerfing Shooting Star...maybe? It only gets really gamebreaking towards the end of the game, though. Remember, this is an optimized setup for the maximum damage possible. It only deals around 250 damage per hit, plus about 1000 for the last hit at the beginning of the game, as opposed to, say, Blast Revolver, which deals about 550 damage per hit for a total of ~4000 damage. It only gets unbalanced if you can make the mini-hits deal large amounts of damage, like with CRISIS.
Oh man someone beat me to the punch and I already recorded some of them ahaha oh well xD
Does anyone remember exactly where Tinderbot Mk3 is in the Factory? I'm trying to get the Signal Ring in the post-game; I went through Phase 2 to Tinder's Hideout and then to Phase 9 for the quest, but I can't find it anywhere in the place. I'm wondering if I missed a trigger somewhere...
Did you go to Tinder's hideout in phase 9 again? That triggers the actual quest.

Anyway, he's fought as a random encounter. There's a certain screen where you'll hear mechanical footsteps. Walk around until you get an exclamation mark, then enter battle. You should see him.
