Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

It's a damn shame that Variant wasn't made...

Parts of Variant were made (and the story was conceptualized at least partially, possibly moreso) but the project was halted due to excessive morons yelling at the dev and making demands on how he should make the game.

Sometimes a game dev needs to 'filter' feedback somewhat so they aren't driven to madness by the trolls.

On that note:
It wasn't mentioned in the RED CAPITAL LETTERS on the main page, but if you make any edits or even open the game up in the RPG Maker 2k3 editor program, then the game will have some map freezing issues on the world map. Specifically for me, saving the game on the world map and then later loading it from that point would have my cursor 'frozen' with the map options window open.

The trick to fixing this is simple. You only need to do this if you've opened up the game in the editor at any point.
-Open up the game in RPG Maker 2K3
-Press F8 to enter 'Database' mode. Or go to Tools Menu, then Database.
-Click 'Common Event' tab.
-Scroll down to Common Event #425: Remove Save Freeze
-At the end there will be a line that says
Switch Operation 0441-0460 OFF
Switch Operation 0460 ON

Get rid of the line that has 0460 ON.
Once that is done, hit OK and close the project, then you won't have any more save/load freezes (hopefully). This worked for me :)
I hope the author can upload this 'fixed' version for people to easily use. :)

It is possible if you're loading a save game that is 'frozen' even after this 'fix' so you may need to do a 'Test Play' in RPG Maker 2k3, then hit F9 to open the debug menu and flip switch #113 to OFF. That'll unfreeze your cursor and let you do stuff. Switch #112 only controls the World Map Options menu and doesn't need to be turned off if you don't want to do so.
It's a damn shame that Variant wasn't made but hey I could understand, with an engine like rpgmaker2003 it's alot of work and time consuming.I just finished replaying this and it was a ton of fun playing through it again, hell I enjoyed Vanilla(Plain) Alter A.I.L.A since that game did have alot of replay value despite it being very item spammy none the less all i can say is good shit neok and do what you can.

This seems like a promising game, but before I consider getting into it, can anyone give me an estimated numbers of hours that this game will require?
About 7 to 10 hours or so.

Don't consider, mate. Just play. This is one of the great RPGs of the RPG Maker RPGs. One can even consider this a legacy game now.

That was a great way to put it, I agree with you. I didn't reply because I actually haven't beaten it (relatively new to RPG Maker Games, was here a long time ago and heard a LOT of hype on this, fell off the RM world, now I am back with a new account) but if I thought to say something like that I would have. The hours in this game don't really matter, it's awesome (my one and only complaint is that it isn't always obvious where to do, but then again that could just as easily have been Neok's intent, but it got really annoying when I couldn't tell where to go because I didn't see there was, say a bridge above the latter because it blended in so well. Nonetheless, GREAT game so far, I think I'll go play it now :D)

When I am supposed to engage the 1st battle(with punks stopping you) it tells me that file anim-005-battle01 cannot be opened or something..

How do I solve this? Oo
Okay, so I just gave it another shot, so I thought I'd update anyone who's been deeply moved by my struggles, as to my status.

I re-downloaded the game, set it to run in compatibility mode, and ran it as an administrator, which I overlooked last time. Anyway, no AVG hissy-fits today, so I guess that's that. By Odin, computers can be awkward XD

--Update--

In case anyone's paying attention- just finished the game today! By which I mean everything except the bonus character mirror battles. Really enjoyed it, so thanks to you guys for the help last week, and a huge thank you to Neok for making such a fun game :)
Well that's what I thought, but safety, as you said, is key. It is odd though, I actually have another RPGmaker game (the JAN Realms demo), and AVG was nice and sweet with that one.

Thanks for the reply :)
I can guarantee you that the file is safe. The creator has not changed the download for more than a year now, and I downloaded this file around that time.

Some antivirus programs tend to act that way, so yeah, but of course, it's always good to be safe.
Yeah, I used the Download link at the top of the page, next to the rating display.

Just checked my event history as you suggested, all it says is 'Process RPG_RT.exe was quarantined' I suppose I should add, it wasn't explicitly referred to as a virus, it just told me 'threat detected'.

That's really all the info I have. I mean to be fair, I'm assuming that whoever put up that link (the creator, presumably), wouldn't throw in a virus, judging from the comments on this page. But I just want to be sure, since I don't have much knowledge about these things. AVG decided that I absolutely had to reboot my PC once the file had been quarantined, so I just wanted follow up on this before I gave the game another shot.
Did you download it from here?

Also, check your AVG log. What was the virus called?

Sometimes anti-virus software will act shady around rpgmaker games because they haven't been verified by a lot of users. That could be what's happening here, but I can't say that definitively without having some idea of what you found.
Hey, I need to ask you something...

I'm interested in trying this game, so I downloaded it. However, when I launched it, my AVG (paid version) popped up and reported a virus in the exe. file, and quarantined it. Sooo... my question is- could there be a virus in the game? Or what exactly could be going on here? Anyone else know/have the same or similar issues?

Thanks in advance :)
Hm...
Any clue on getting extra character Tinder?

Edit: Never mind. Forgot one's Joker.
Kinda hard to tell if you're missing a Joker when you don't know what Ability they give you. =/

Hah! The little beeps during the battle transition really makes this.
Just gonna leave a small story here.

So there was a time where I wanted to beat the next boss in AAG. Then, what seemed like it was Fate's doing (and later did I learn that it was Fate's doing), the boss gave me an error that was completely hard to understand. Over. And over. And over. And it was all mumbo-jumbo numbers that made no sense.

Cut to almost six months later, I got back to it in boredom and in hopes to see if it actually worked... the boss battle worked. Inexplicably.

So, out of rage, I threw in this music in the battle.

In the end, I never really knew what the hell caused it. .-.
BTW Here's what I found so far in the Face Maze of the Orbital Prison Core:

NPCs

2 Punks around door 5

Hoodlum near door 1

Old man near door 4

Rebel near Door 1

Beggar near door 6

Red Tuxedo Man near Door 3

Corpse in Front of Door 6

Soldiers

Backgrounds seen through doors:

Harbor, Stynx Prison, Underwater, City

Others:
Foggy Room
Red Mist Room
Glowing Eyes

Maybe the NPCs can give you an idea of your location?
Good News: I just finished a guide for the Shard and Joker Locations. MASSIVE SPOILERS abound, it is suggested that you finish the game before even reading this. Do not blame me at all if your game play experience is ruined.

If you go on a ladder when an enemy goes to attack you the enemy can longer attack you. Also i'm not very far yet but if the government has the ability to delete memoris why lock people up? Wouldn't it be better to erase memories causing them to do illegal things or the act of doing what was illegal instead? That seems like a much more merciful and just punishment to me. besides that the story seems good.
