Your name is Rubi. You are a child, in the family of the Mountain Shrine. Here, they honor the spirits. You are part Spirit, having the power of fire and the power to see the spirits roaming around the world as well.

You get a message from a fellow spirit that they need your help, so you go see what could be the problem...

This is a small 3 day contest game for the RMN Weekend Gamemaking Binge event! This is a simple Action RPG.

Controls:
Z- Attack from 2 spaces away
X- Spell ring menu
Numbers 1-3: Item
Shift: Use when your attack gauge is full to get a boost in power temporarily

Video tab added

A very simple update, I added a gameplay video onto the Rubi page. So you can see a sample of how the game is like.

As for the future, I am getting together plans to remake it. I will likely start working on that a lot more in March, where I'll start making full custom graphics and music for the project. It will not be in RM2k3 either. I hope to expand it, continue to make it fun, and have an interesting world to go along with it. In the mean time, I am still working on Azulea. You may see some progress on that soon.

Also, thank you for the 100 downloads! :D I hope you all enjoyed it.

Yeah, ran out of time so there's still things in it like you facing the wrong direction at times and some menu delays. Glad you tried it out though!
Awesome, the battle system is really good for a 3 day entry. Of course it can be polished, but it's very good for 3 days! Very SOM hehe. The ring (or supposed ring) bugged out at the first battle and started scrolling right lol. This sort of fixed itself though. The enemies took quite a bit of hits to kill until you started to get items + lvl ups. After that it was a breeze. I like how you have automatic regen on both your mana and hp. I would have died facing that kid as I bought no "1s" and "3s" and didn't clear maps of mobs so much. I got all the items you can equip though.

Maps were nice with nice variation between town, beach, forest, and cave. I was sort of getting into the items as well. Music was pretty good! Dialogue was very entertaining. It's a short game, no need for dramatization.

This was cool Ocean.

Nice feedback, thanks for trying it out!

I will try out the ring menu in the first battle then, perhaps I just did something silly in it. Really I noticed a problem with the menus partway into making the game when I made maps bigger than 20x15, so I had to go back and change it, so perhaps I messed it up in the first battle. Sorry about that!

Making enemies a bit weaker to start with... sure, I can do that. Might as well ease people into it.

I meant to make a wider variety of items to get, but again, ran out of time!
Funny, in the boy's batle, he used a healing spell on me twice, so the low 1s and 3s was not a problem.. ><'

Not that it would, 190Mp + Fire ring make you practically invincible, since enemies can't harm you anymore if you fire them out. :D

This was a very fun and amusing little game, full of small buggies (such as a passable wall at "beach 3"), normal for a 3 days custom system game (or any game for that matter) and also a game that could make it into being an awesome game. :D

I liked how you could only attack on 2 directions, but I thought Bandages could recover just a percentage of Hp instead, same for energy drink, if you eventually expand this game in a bigger game. Also, make DMG numbers pop out so you know the average of your attacks could be nice, since doing this with battle animations isn't this hard... Unless of course the output damage is big enough, if it is it'll be a pain since you'll have to use pictures instead of battle animations. :/

Also, you know, the game'd have looked nicer if you used your own, much nicer and awesomer(???) battle animations. Such as the ones in Paradise blue. Those random Charasy Mugen-y battle animations were kinda ugly... D:
Especially compared to your own. (And making Fire Line actually a fire line by using a sparkle in a direction that disappears in 5 tiles away, for instance. Tough that could be hard due to the timing of the spell, but you could make it just very quick so the player wouldn't notice)
Well, that's just a very nitpicking me talking, I actually enjoyed this game a lot, and the shark made me have flashbackasms about Legend of Mana's "ship" level enemies. :D

I can pick more bugs and stuff that could be changed if you want, but I guess you'd feel better if you did it yourself? Anyways, great game Ocean. :D
(I was thinking on writing a review, but the game'll change and I won't be able to change the review now, will I? :I)

No that means you lost 2 lives! I guess it's my fault for using the heal animation for it, but yeah if you look at your lives counter, if you lose all your lives you get a game over.

Yeah it has a bit of bugs, tried to avoid it and fix some but there wasn't enough time for that.

I could consider the percentages for a full length game, yeah. It probably wouldn't be massively big, perhaps doing it by using your Spirit stat could work too... I will think about this!

Damage numbers would be a pain, but I could consider stuff like an enemy HP bar.

Hah, I had no time for animations so I just used what was available. That said, yeah that's definitely something I need to replace. Fire Line in particular. I was thinking of doing more spells, and having you learn more over the course of the game.

Well it's fine if you go over more of the bugs/stuff to fix, I actually won't get around to fixing it yet because of all the other things i have to work on now. I'd like to work on this more in the future though. Maybe taking the concepts from here and making it in a new engine, maybe fixing up and expanding this version, I am unsure! Thanks for trying it out.

Cool game, best ABS I have played in RM! The only problem was the balance, the fire line skill was so strong and you could use it a lot without running out of FP. Of course I don't expect fine tuned balance from a 3 day game though. :D Having the regular attack reach 2 spaces and adding knockback when enemies get hit were good choices and solved many of the problems other RM ABS games had.
whoa wait what is this ??

Awesome thing! Yeah, I think it was too strong a spell. I wanted to give you some reason to use the spells and not just make it more efficient to keep attacking, but yeah I think I will raise the MP cost!

It is released! I didn't quite get to make the map fixes that you pointed out before but I ran out of tiime
This was pretty awesome! How much of the graphics were made by you? Like, I spotted a few SoM rips, but I don't think I've seen those tilesets or alot of those characters before.

There were a few glitches here and there, but for the most part the game was pretty neat!

Things I liked:
-Using different abilities in specific situations (line when they were lined up, ring when I was surrounded, slow so I could round them up, etc).
-Beautiful lush scenery. Especially that cave. Everything looked awesome.
-Lots of item drops for equipment and such. Gold wasn't too sparse at all (but not too abundant either).
-Fun playful dialogue. This game made you feel good.

Things I disliked:
-Enemies didn't seem to do much else besides walk into you. expected from a 3-day game effort, but still!
-The attacking in only 2 directions was troublesome at times.. Although it seems to be fine with the Ring skill available. Also, sometimes I'd get stuck only being able to move one direction, for some reason.
-Pretty easy game!
-Bugz

All in all, incredible effort for only 3 days. Really dug it. Hopefully you intend to keep going with this!

I couldn't make the graphics in time, and I knew that, so I decided to use Sword of Mana tilesets, and Seiken Densetsu 3 characters/enemies for a fill in. If I had the time later I would have gone in and replaced them but I was rushing as is. There are a few custom ones though: A shark enemy, Rubis sprite, Mister Mushroom, some of the Shrine tiles, the HUD, things like that.

-Using different abilities in specific situations (line when they were lined up, ring when I was surrounded, slow so I could round them up, etc).

I'm glad that this worked well. I am not a big fan of making spells for people to only spam one of them. I had in mind to make a trap spell, but as time was against me, I opted for the Slow spell.

These are good notes though, I will definitely have to go bug fixing soon then.
D...Damn!!!!! The shmupcrew strikes again! I'll try to do a review for this.

Ah yeah, I was hoping to have it be a feel good type of game... despite most of the townspeople in the first town actually being pretty rude. This will be something I'd like to keep up with the new version later.
O_O I didn't know this game was up! I thought you were still working on it. I can't wait to play ^O^!

EDIT: I love the cave music! ^__^ Where is this music from? Or did you friend make it?

Bug1: The store in the first village you go to, the one that has the items on the table... if you try to exit the store from the left or right by the plants, and move down, it lets you move down through the wall... a simple passable tile error. Just bringing that to your attention if you're not aware. I'll examine this game carefully to find anything that might need fixing.

Bug2: There's a transparent pixel on the top parts of the cliff. The part of the cliff that covers the character. When you stand in front of it facing down, one of your characters pixels shows through the grass.

Bug3: After the first fighting area with the 2 bunnys and mushroom, if you go back the way you came in after the battle, and then go back, it shows the bunny still there, then disappear real fast.

Bug4: For some reason, the 2nd battle reward, the bandage. It won't let me get it! I'm trying to walk into it and press buttons on it, and nothing is happening. v_v;

Bug5: In the cave, there's another tile glitch. Standing behind the walls that you can walk behind, show the character's pixel through them. Lol. Dunno of these are really bugs, just little graphic errors. They aren't a problem, really, it's just silly. xP (Hey, I can see myself through that rock!)
