Please read the Demo Notes before downloading! They'll give you some hints that will come in handy.
Eric is a sullen merchant who runs a tiny roadside shop as far from his family as possible. Content to work in near solitude, with his biggest fear being a misplaced invoice, he longs for nothing but peace and quiet. However, when an inept pair of messengers arrive carrying a message calling him back to life he left behind, Eric is pulled from his oasis into a world of monsters, magic, scheming nobles, and adventure, something he doesn't want to deal with. He's given what seems like a simple order, to uncover four ancient temples and recover the riches hidden within, but things are never really that easy.

Eric dearly wishes to return to his humdrum existence, but becomes snared in a web of events beyond his control when he learns he's not the only one after these treasures. To make it home and overcome his fear of the unknown he'll journey through harsh deserts, ancient ruins, and lush forests. He'll need all the help he can get and will have to enlist the aid of pirates, goblins, and more to stay alive. After all, Eric only wants to go home, and he'll do anything to make that happen.
Heavily influenced by The Cartographer and the first two Golden Suns.

Estimated play time (DEMO): Two hours.

Work Was Beginning

So, yeah. A New World is finally back in production. I've been fiddling with a few things during my hiatus, but I've finally decided to put some actual work into this beast and bring it back from the dead. During my time away from this project, I learned a LOT about VX and its inner workings, in addition to improving my writing skills about a thousand-fold. When I opened the project file last night, I literally cringed at some of my dialog, mapping, and content, but I'm working to improve it so ANW becomes more than an average VX game. Expect an updated version of the current demo within a week, and a brand-spanking new demo by sometime in September.
Thanks to everybody who has downloaded and subscribed to A New World!

Notes on the New Demo:
Added:
-A brief scene in the introduction where Eric prepares for the journey
-More mature, less comedic dialog
-New area (The Watchtower) to the Greenewood
-More hidden treasure in the Greenewood
-Two new scenes in King's Harbor, which expand on story and characters
-New, hidden areas to King's Harbor
-Skills that actually do something worthwhile
-The Haruma Stone now adds a new skill to Eric's arsenal
-Much improved, more detailed mapping
-Tweaked Orike boss fight to be a little more challenging
-Much improved, more natural looking world map
Removed:
-Some of the more juvenile dialog from the intro
-Billions of spelling and grammar errors
-A few NPCs from king's Harbor, making the city easier to navigate

A whole new woooooorld! A shining place I never knew!...

This game is MAGICAL. I downloaded the demo and smiled the whole time...
But, unfortunately, that wasn't very long. After Donovan goes ahead to scout in the Greenewood--specifically, as soon as Falke says that he's not as thick as Donny--the game pretty much locks. You've got an event conflict of some kind that's not letting the player take control of the character again, so they're stuck just standing there. Forever.

But I am subbing like you wouldn't believe.

I want to add that I'm terribly jealous of your mapping.
Huh... I'll get right to fixing that.
Thanks for the kind words! Also, that demo is supposed to be for testers only... I should fix that.
You've got yerself a new subscriber--me.
Thanks for the sub.
I fixed the problem in the Greenewood and a couple other things I noticed.
I'll have the fixed download up sometime soon.
Right on. Hah, didn't realize we weren't supposed to get that--whoops!
But I look forward to the 'official' demo.
Even without being able to play much just yet, I will say that you have the 'feel' for what a JRPG story/plot/dialogue should be spot-on, and that's pretty exciting.
Hmm... So even though you two have downloaded it, the gamepage says that nobody has.
Can anyone shed some light on why that might be?
The download link goes to mediafire instead of resulting in an instant download.

The download link goes to mediafire instead of resulting in an instant download.

That doesn't affect the amount of downloads it will actually show.
Hurray, it works now!
The download is now gone until I upload a fixed version later. Sorry if you already downloaded the bugged version. A new beta will be made public soon, probably before mid-July.
Download is accepted! Please play and give me feedback!
As soon as I saw this was up I downloaded and played it. I am still terribly jealous of your mapping and also the fluidity of your dialogue. You make it looks so easy!

Ran into an 'Unable to find file Graphics/Characters/Actor3tan' error on trying to enter the town/city after Greenewood, though (I can only assume it's King's Harbor). I also had some issues with the maps in that last screen of the Greenewood (the one on which you meet Sarah)--it seems like one should be able to follow the road either direction, but I wasn't able to follow the road past the ruins into another map, only to go out. You may want to give the player some indicator of 'wrong way' outside of an apparent invisible wall in the middle of the path at the edge of the map.

Take this and copy it into the Demo's Graphics folder.
Thanks for pointing that out! As for the paths, they both lead places, one of them to be added later and the other one to an area open after entering King's Harbor.
Yugh, I'm back. Sry for disappearing, had to go do important thangs!

There's part 1 for you. I'm leaving for the weekend but QT and someone else might pick it up for a part 2.
Thanks! I'm just watching it now. There's an error later on that keeps you from progressing that I didn't find until now. If you want to wait, I can get you a fixed version soon.

So your turning this into a game right?
