Please read the Demo Notes before downloading! They'll give you some hints that will come in handy.
Eric is a sullen merchant who runs a tiny roadside shop as far from his family as possible. Content to work in near solitude, with his biggest fear being a misplaced invoice, he longs for nothing but peace and quiet. However, when an inept pair of messengers arrive carrying a message calling him back to life he left behind, Eric is pulled from his oasis into a world of monsters, magic, scheming nobles, and adventure, something he doesn't want to deal with. He's given what seems like a simple order, to uncover four ancient temples and recover the riches hidden within, but things are never really that easy.

Eric dearly wishes to return to his humdrum existence, but becomes snared in a web of events beyond his control when he learns he's not the only one after these treasures. To make it home and overcome his fear of the unknown he'll journey through harsh deserts, ancient ruins, and lush forests. He'll need all the help he can get and will have to enlist the aid of pirates, goblins, and more to stay alive. After all, Eric only wants to go home, and he'll do anything to make that happen.
Heavily influenced by The Cartographer and the first two Golden Suns.

Estimated play time (DEMO): Two hours.

Work Was Beginning

So, yeah. A New World is finally back in production. I've been fiddling with a few things during my hiatus, but I've finally decided to put some actual work into this beast and bring it back from the dead. During my time away from this project, I learned a LOT about VX and its inner workings, in addition to improving my writing skills about a thousand-fold. When I opened the project file last night, I literally cringed at some of my dialog, mapping, and content, but I'm working to improve it so ANW becomes more than an average VX game. Expect an updated version of the current demo within a week, and a brand-spanking new demo by sometime in September.
Thanks to everybody who has downloaded and subscribed to A New World!

Notes on the New Demo:
Added:
-A brief scene in the introduction where Eric prepares for the journey
-More mature, less comedic dialog
-New area (The Watchtower) to the Greenewood
-More hidden treasure in the Greenewood
-Two new scenes in King's Harbor, which expand on story and characters
-New, hidden areas to King's Harbor
-Skills that actually do something worthwhile
-The Haruma Stone now adds a new skill to Eric's arsenal
-Much improved, more detailed mapping
-Tweaked Orike boss fight to be a little more challenging
-Much improved, more natural looking world map
Removed:
-Some of the more juvenile dialog from the intro
-Billions of spelling and grammar errors
-A few NPCs from king's Harbor, making the city easier to navigate

So your turning this into a game right?

Um... No? That's pretty good though, even if Japanese music isn't my thing! I'll have to take that song and find a place to stick it in the game. Thanks.

Well, thanks for pointing it out either way! I thought it was funny.
Overall, a pretty impressive demo. It reminds me a lot like "The Cartographer", probably do to a bit of the game play and graphics.

There were a few things I came across, some of which may have to do with having the old demo. One is that I got an error for missing file when I first entered the castle (missing Graphics/Characters/Actor3Tan). I just copied a char sheet over and renamed it as such. Also, the jump for the treasure in the wooded area didn't work for me.

I'd also suggest having the initial enemies drop potions and herbs, considering you can't yet buy any restorative items and the nearest firepit to restore is several screens away. For people like me who like to level grind, that means I run out of items before I even knew about the firepit.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll take a look at the jump in the woods and see what went wrong there. As for having the enemies drop healing items, I can do that too. I guess I should have realized that some people might want to level grind. And the missing file issue has been fixed now.
EDIT: Odd, the jump is working fine for me. It may be because you had the older demo.
Possibly do to the old demo, which cut off when you entered the goblin camp. Aside from that issue about no dropped items, I felt the battles were pretty well balanced, though.

Edit: Just saw your Demo notes. That was it, I think. I didn't know to press "W" and was pressing "Enter" I believe.
The old demo has been removed and the revamped one has been submitted. I'll cover the significant changes in a blog or something when it becomes available for download.
