One rainy day in the industrialized port city of Dejanor, a mage named Moshi Cenalus leaves her dingy hotel room to buy something to eat. It was just a normal day for her, until she has a run-in with some local thieves.

Following that dangerous encounter, she befriends the woman who helped her fend off the attackers, and learns of a forest called "Last Sanctuary" where mages are said to live free from scorn and oppression.

While in search of the fabled Last Sanctuary, her story crosses with those of the people she meets along the way. They come from a variety of backgrounds, from the impoverished worker who seeks a better life, to a disgraced soldier who desires redemption, to a reclusive queen in the snowy north who risks losing her homeland to the spread of industrialization.

Little did the mage know that her seemingly insignificant actions would, in the end, contribute to major changes in the people and places around her.

But would it be for better or for worse?

- No random encounters! Simply bump into enemies on maps to fight them. Most encounters will respawn as in-game time passes.
- Adjust the game's difficulty at any time.
- Light nonlinearity: as the main storyline progresses, you can embark on sidequests that reward you with unique rewards and extra details about the game's setting and its characters.
- Battle enemies whose movesets and tactics change depending on difficulty level.
- Alter dialogue and major plot events by improving--or ruining--friendships with party members.
- Customize your characters' skillsets by equipping them with "Devices" and "Skill Books".

Spring Cleaning ~ v0.19 Release Notes

The download has been updated to reflect the Ace revision of the demo for Release Something Weekend! Version 0.19* is a pretty heavy remake of the game with changes such as:

- A revised battle system in which the Chain bars and Purge skills are more important
- The difficulty can be changed at any time now
- Taller character sprites on the map and in battle
- Custom character artwork
- Some skippable cutscenes
- Pixel art enemies (some by me, others are edits of Milano Cat's)
- Rewritten dialogue
- Talkbubbles for NPCs who have something to say
- New graphics for the Affection menu
- Field Effect system removed entirely (it didn't contribute much)

There's also a readme that's intended to help out those who find this game outside of RM sites.

The demo ends in the same place as the last one because I wanted to clear up the discrepancy between the engine tag and the download right now, and I still wanted it to end on a cliffhanger, and probably get cheevos for effort. But anyway, hope you have fun! :)

Let me know if you find bugs/missing file errors/have issues with the balancing or whatever.
Now that that's over and done with, I think I can finally move on! hooray

There are a couple of minor non game-breaking issues. They're in the readme, but I'll paste them here anyway:

KNOWN ISSUES
- Skipping a cutscene while the map is still scrolling or when a character moves may cause random graphical errors such as misplaced overlays.
- An overlay flashes at the end of the demo when selecting to return to the title screen. It will be gone once more content is added to the game and it transitions to the right place.
- Battles may lag momentarily when using a multi-hit skill for the first time in a battle. It should lag less if that same skill is used more than once in the same battle (the graphics are cached).

The missing teleport was a rushed last-minute attempted fix before uploading the event entry, so I deleted the transfer in the center but not the ones to its left and right.
I've uploaded a new version that has the missing picture and (hopefully) fixed movements. I tested it many times, just to be sure...

Holy shit, how have I missed this? This looks incredible. Your aesthetic is alarmingly pleasant (the emperor is hot, btw). I'd go through and comment on individual pages but each post would just be complimentary gibberish.

This looks like something I'd love to do an analytic play-through of sometime, either via text or video.

Like an LT or something? I dunno if you do those anymore, but I think that'd be cool to see once I get a longer demo completed! :)

I don't seek them out like I used to, but I do private videos still for cool people.

I played this game and I am liking it so far. Until the end of the preview was just on the first town =_=;;

I noticed some game breaking bugs though like in the move events and such with the General and the Rookie talking. But it seems like you fixed it so <3
Game looks good. Havent had the chance to play it yet but Ill check it out after graduation.

Yeah, I wanted to go farther than "game ends here kthxbai" but I didn't have time to re-event a cutscene containing a crowd of people before the deadline :c

No, it's very short. I'm planning on having a lot more content in the next release, though
Okay, soooo just found this today.

1) h-h-h-hhh-hhh-hhhhh-HOT. This is hot. This makes my metaphorical dick rock hard. <3 (oh gosh I hope it isn't too awkward admitting that)
2) I LIKE WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH THIS ALL OVER. The combat looks interesting, the optional tutorials made me cry little tears of joy, and OH MAN THE ATMOSPHERE. <3 I'm legit interested in all the things that are going on here, which is great. <3
3) FFFFUCK THIS IS SO PRETTY HAANGAGHAHGAG <333 Like oh man I see these tiles you're using used all the time and I was so sick of them but NOT ANYMORE. <3 You've done a fabulous job with the mapping here, and the portraits and sprites all look wonderful.
4) Lady protagoniiiiist ;w; <3

I'm subbed, and I can't wait to see what you do next! Definitely looking forward to this~!

Two minor things: Moshi's name was irritating me, but that's just because I'm picky as hell about names and I can get over that. Second, I didn't like that I started the game playing as a bad dude (because I have no real reason to care about someone who is a mouldy bag of dicks and therefore might not be totally engaged with what's going on), but that is also something that is a personal pet peeve of mine that I can get over.

BASICALLY YOUR 13 MINUTE THING WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR ME AND I THANK YOU FOR IT. <3

Okay I'm done fangirling everywhere now

I'm glad you enjoyed the game~

Regarding Moshi's name...um, blame 16-year old me for that. xD The name just stuck over the years, but her full name
(whee spoilers--also tvtropes)
is an accidental anagram that I honestly didn't notice until way later.

I feel that some people may be put off by the "lolanimu" of it, but there's plot reasons (as well as my attachment to it) that's preventing me from changing it to something else. As well as searching for every single line of dialogue and database entry that mentions it ._.

The prologue stuff does interact with the main storyline(s) about a couple hours in, though! Well, it's a rough estimate, depending on how long these dungeons will be
Ah-hahahaha, I know how the attachment thing goes. (Accidentally gave a big tough manly character a chick's name; there's an easy, one letter fix but I can't bring myself to do it. ;__;)

And yeeeeah, I'm just all... I really hate it when games start out giving me control of a character that isn't the protag. XD I hated it in FF12, I hated it in other big name RM games, bluh bluh bluh. Definitely an instance of me being picky with my personal narrative preferences, so don't read too much into it! Ah-hahaha, the atmosphere (especially those watcher robots being everywhere; cannot stress how much I love that one subtle thing) you created more than makes up for such a minor dislike of mine. XD

Wow... I certainly hope for the sake of our innocence (har har) that it's not the 5th to last one... though I would be curious to see that implemented into this game, or any game for that matter.

calunio would like to have a word with you.

Regarding "opening with other character," I actually like it. I'm a big fan of multiple perspectives. Pretty much just taste, so... do what you like.

It'll be my kind of game if it is. B)

JK~ (or am I)

@Craze: Oh, multiple perspectives I adore, just not right from the get go! I'm ridiculously picky when it comes to game openings, though (specifically game openings, now that I think on it, which is kind of really strange?), and defs Melkino ought to do what they like the most.

...really I'm a little neurotic and ought not have mentioned such a personal pet peeve of mine in the first place. OTL
In FFIV did you start as Kain or Cecil? I don't remember.

@emmych
Oh, I don't have a problem with that at all! Everyone likes different things. While starting with different characters is a thing I personally like a lot in RPGs, I think I understand what you mean, though. (kinda like an unintended bait-and-switch or something, maybe?)
Well, the last thing I want to do with an RPG opening is to bore the hell out of the player.
