Gabriel Landry is on the brink of re-discovering the lost art of White Magic. By simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Gordon Tullet, a young; yet talented Alchemist, learns the dark secrets and dangers behind White Magic. Framed for a crime he did not commit, he sets out to bring sense to the obsessive Gabriel.

Although this is an honest effort, aiming to bring a complete RPG experience, the game uses mostly default systems, and is a relatively short and sweet fantasy JRPG. Set cliché to maximum setting! Full speed ahead, into that forest dungeon!

The current download is approximately 1 hour in length, which is the entire first chapter, and about 20% of the full game.

The demo may not be the longest one around, but since this is my first real release, I wanted to get a grasp on what I am doing right and wrong. The next demo, will be a more complete package. It will include a improved chapter one, and chapter two; which will be more focused on bringing a better experience, based on the feedback I have received. I’m feeling a late September, or early October time vibe (or possibly even later). Thank you so much for reading/playing my game!

I’m really open to advice, and critique about everything, so don't be shy, I promise I won't ever take offence! I can’t keep being too afraid to release stuff. Throw me to the lions!

On the hunt!

Oh, another update! Well look at me, keeping you all informed and shit.

Yeah, I’m been busy. Firstly the Casanero map that I slaved over for literal months has now been scrapped because I lost my sanity completely (though my sister plays her One Direction CD nearly everyday so it could be that). I can’t map cities to save my life and when I manage to, I obsess over stupid little things. I’ve changed the chipset and the city is more of a little fishing town now, but I’ve gotten to a point where I am happy without sacrificing all that good story stuff. Unfortunately the final town in the game is a big city and it can’t be turned into a little backwater village like Casanero, so I’m kind of fucked, but I’ll worry about that later! You may now take bets on which month this year I will cancel this game.

So are you wondering when is the next demo is out? … Very soon! This whole PM is about hunting down some beta testers actually!

I’m only looking for about three people. Maybe. Even if you have never done it before, absolutely anyone can be a beta tester (it’s not exactly a privilege) but if you’re name is cloudstrife4life and you have zero posts on RMN I’m going to give you a resounding no/ignore your PM forever and hope you don’t look at the “Who’s Online” section. So if you’re interested in helping me, make sure you understand what I am asking for:

1) I would love to keep the same testers throughout. Would you beta test not only this release, but all future releases as well until the games completion? If you beta test only one release I won’t be happy! Not even death will excuse this. If you die, you have to come back to life temporarily and finish my notes.

2) If you played the original demo, sorry but you’re going to have to play chapter one again! It remains mostly the same, but many minor things have changed, meaning it needs to be tested. =(

3) I know the original demo had a lot of amateur spelling and grammar mistakes, but I do somewhat pride myself on trying to make an enjoyable polished product. To me, a game breaking bug is just as important as incorrect spelling and inconstancies. If that sounds like something you don’t mind searching for, we’ll get along great!

4) I may set myself deadlines, but I won’t be setting you any, so no worries if you have a hectic life. The demo gets released when it’s gets released, I don’t have a quota to meet, this is a hobby! That being said it’s only just over 2 hours long, so don’t be a jerk about it.

Thanks for reading! If you decide to do it, you will appear on the game page, in the credits and I will also return the favour should you ever need something beta testing, I’m a fucking swell guy, right? Don’t answer that, I already know I am. Also, I’m taking down the current download in one weeks time. You’ve had a whole year to download it, so if you still haven’t yet you should! Unless of course you don’t like the look of it, then I would recommend not downloading it.

tldr the download is disappearing soon and I think you’re a wild animal.

Played the entire first chapter -- which was around an hour in length. It's definitely an interesting little WIP with some quirky gameplay ideas. I might get around to doing a quick review for this game when I have some free time.

Also, there's a few editing issues to be fixed in Gordon's dream near the end of chapter.

Thanks a lot for your comment. Really happy to see it’s as long as an hour too! Miracle sent me the most amazing PM, listing all the bugs he found, so I’ll be looking into them all. Cheers!

also wow theres a download cool, i'll check it out
Oh hey time to check this out. I've always liked your reviews, let's see how the game is.
LWG,

I gave the demo a try. It definitely looks promising so far, with some interesting ideas. The plot, while admittedly linear still left some intrigue, although character development could use some work (I realize that there's not much of a chance to do so in an hour-long demo). I found mapping to be solid and liked the fact you went with non-RTP music. I liked the whole idea of being notified of how many chests you have found and are findable in an area, actually finding them and getting a bonus for finding them all. Also, searching areas leading to finding items or at least interesting messages, which seems to be implemented less and less, nowadays. All those notifications about what to do next were helpful reminders, although the scrolling messages I sometimes found somewhat confusing. Your choice of non-random encounters with an enemies' sprite (with a couple of notifications, the ! is always shown while the text might not be appear onscreen depending on enemies' location) is interesting since it isn't that common in RM2k3 games. The fights I found, overall, to be relatively easy (barely had to use any items in the demo), while some of the messages displayed during an enemy's turn seemed to flash a bit too quickly for my taste or didn't give me a meaningful idea of what the enemy just did. I didn't find any game-breaking bugs and just a few grammar/spelling issues. For some reason, my font wasn't the same as the one in your screenshots and made it hard to read (I've had that issue with other RM2k3 games before!). Overall, I look forward to you continuing your development of this game. Subbed!

Appreciate this comment muchly.

I always knew character development was going to be trouble, I’ve got some cool scenes planned between Gordon and Erika, as they obviously end up travelling together. I’ll look into some scenes and try to get some more standout personality in them. I had a scene planned in the first chapter where Gordon tries to get through Kraylin Wood at night, and ends up having a massive panic attack, and fighting enemies that aren’t even there, but I decided not to. I want to show he’s incapable of dealing with death and losing people, but I see it’s not working yet. =(

The speed of the skill messages isn’t anything I can change I‘m afraid, But I’ll rename them to “Attack Boost” etc, instead of “cryptic misleading skill name”. I’m not overly amazing at RPGs (even though I love them), so I sort of catered the battles to my amateur tastes. I deliberately made poison almost worthless, as I hate that prolonging status effect, especially in 2k3. I’ll give them some more testing, and make them hit a bit harder.

That scrolling message banner, was a experiment, it seemed good on paper. I agree with you it can be quite awkward, especially when your trying to read a treasure chest. I don’t know what I’ll do with that yet.

By the by, here’s the font. Install it, and you’re golden. More and more 2k3 games are using it, so it’s worth doing. Thanks again for taking the time to try the game, and leaving this comment. You’re a cool dude.

That’s a weird one. I didn’t delete anything apart from some sound effects and music, so nothing should be missing. No one else has mentioned this yet, maybe it was a once time error? Oh well, using my incredible intellect, I have deduced that it is indeed this file that is missing. Whack that in your CharSet folder and continue playing if you fancy.

*probably not the correct file*

Yeah, the scrolling is a new idea, but new ideas aren't necessarily always good. I do have an idea on how to fix it. Instead of scrolling, try using different text transitional methods. You could have the text at the top be slowly revealed -- like if someone was writing the text down on paper. Then when the whole message is written/revealed, you wait for a few seconds and then start the next line of message the same exact way. This way it's much easier to read the text and it keeps the same uniqueness the old transition had.

You're welcome. I see you have taken the time to address some of my comments. I hope they serve you to rethink a few things and hopefully improve some of them for the next demo (it would be one chapter at a time, I figure, right?). Regarding the font issue, I probably have it again since I migrate to a new computer. Also, regarding the scrolling text, I forgot to mention it reminds me of what you get in some of the news channels on cable (information overload!).
I have no idea why I am still having this problem, or why am I the only one who has been experiencing it. I put the chara05_r1 into the CharSet folder but that didn't work. I also try deleted the game and extracting it all over but the problem still persisted. I don't know what I have done to make your game angry at me.
Eeeeeeeeeeeee, a game from LWG, yay!
Must download!
hey i haven't played much but i liked what i played. not as much as collision of villnoire but im sure this game is better, i just have weird tastes. anyway here are my indecipherable notes:
- good sense of rpg theatrics, interesting premises
- a million commas missing
- i think you may have daddy issues; this and collision of villnoire had young angsters with overbearing dads; but i kind of like that, like i'd rather play a game based on actual human experience rather than "gary stew" story about some superhuman teenage swordsman with great hair

when i play more i'll send more feedback, in the meantime best of luck lwg

Cheers for playing it, and commenting too. This game is generally a lot more light hearted than COV was, so maybe that's why? I agree with you though, COV would probably have been cooler than this, but I feel like this is the kind of game I need to make, at least for now. After this, hopefully I’ll learn a lot to stop being a moron, and I’ll be able to tackle another beast like COV.

And yeah, good spot! Me and my dad don't see eye to eye. I think I was the milkman’s. Thanks again mate.
I'm curios, all of this sprites is VX sprites, what converter do you use to make it compatible with 2k3?

Oh, I didn’t convert them. The website I got them from has those resources in both; 2k3 and VX style. See the credits section on the game page? Click on Primary Graphics, and that’ll take you to their website. All their resources are public domain. You’re welcome!

edit: done.

Well that was a very nice demo, Can't wait for full.
At the first part of the game, after coming out of the forest to enter the tow, an error popped up and I couldn't advance the game anymore :(

=( You’re the second person to have the exact same problem. Was it the same error as Jakester? And do you definitely, definitely have the RTP installed? I don’t get how it can work for 90% of people, and not the others. Just before I uploaded it, I deleted some music, and sound effects that are played in areas that aren’t in the demo, and that was it. I didn’t delete or change any other files.

I honestly don’t know why this happens. You’d think being the creator of the game, I’d know something, but I don’t. Sorry!
