Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

If anyone is looking for a guide, I have one on my website.

I have only Riho Kaneshiro's complete guide, but if anyone is interested you can always ask and I'll make a guide for another girl (:

I think there have been a few questions about a guide, but, I think the only one who even expressed a remote interest in writing it was me, and I've only completed one of the built-in routes?

I totally respect that you're doing this on your free time. Though, I must admit to being a tad worried about the size of the page. I mean, if you write a guide for all the built-in characters (not to mention what requests may be had of custom ones) on that one page? That would just be one gigantic post. I guess doing a CTRL+F to get to where you need to go could be a thing, but, I'm kinda thinking that having separate pages for each route would make things more readable, and generally easier to access.
like the game didn't see all the characters but that's what going back for is.
thanks for the hard work you put into this.

I'm not really sure how to do that. This is my only page and I'm just now starting to upload more things. I suppose it's better than nothing :/

I suppose so. As an aside, I noticed you started a walk-through for Chemi. Seems like a logical next-step, considering her "secret character" status.

FUN FACT: Chemi was included in the game with version 0.7, released August 21 2011. However, there was one custom content made available to the public before her inclusion! Thankfully, the ID that said custom character took up was 10, and flowerthief was able to slide in Chemi in ID slot 8 with no hassles.

Not that flowerthief cared about such things, but there was somebody who did, even back then.
Well, already tried my 101 days once (No harem) got Keika and let me tell you... that ending made me drop tears... the story captured me and that IS rare, only a couple of other stories did that, and the endings to them made me cry, not only because the ending itself was really warm but the fact that it was all over just hit me. So in the end i want to say 10/10. Hell i would say 20/10 since its made with RPGMaker.

PD: If, IF i was to make a story/profile for Heartache, dont expect something light, its going to break your hearth multiple times. It WILL turn you into a rollercoaster, in times you will be down (Sad or something close) and in other times you will be up (Happy, Excited, etc). Btw sorry if i made some mistakes while writting, english isnt my main language.

Thanks for the mini-review, and for playing! Also, for English not being your first language, you did okay.

If you wish to submit your content (if you make it), drop a post on this thread. You will need to provide at least one screenshot, and talk a bit about the character's personality, and what kind of story players would expect.
Having trouble adding in user-created material. Specifically: Yuu Lambaria.

Any tips on how to integrate her into the main game?

Hrm. That's interesting. I downloaded Yuu from the official site, myself, and it gave me an error message when I tried to extract the files. I thought about uploading the backup file that's on my computer into my locker, but, I thought it would be better to replace the one on the official site.

Except that when I downloaded it again out of sheer curiosity, it extracted as normal. I'm not sure what to make of this!

*Edit: By the way, was the trouble you were having getting Yuu to work about extracting the file, or some other issue?
I've had no trouble with the version of Yuu's files stored here. I can't speak for the 3eeweb page, though, as I still cannot access it.
Everything was well when I extracted the files. After I added them in, however, when I open the game, I receive "Error: Image 'Yuu/15-neutral.png' not found in the 'Tachie' directory for the DISLIKE field for character ID=15 in file 'yuu_profile.txt'" Not exactly sure what to make of that besides an Tachie is missing, although I added in everything that came with Yuu.
...
Nevermind, the problem has been resolved. It was a simple mistake on my end. I had tried adding in each of the file's content into the game's builtin files. For example I copied and pasted all of Yuu's tachie into the Tachie folder which came with the game. Once I just added in Yuu's folder into the game's it ran smoothly again. Sorry for any confusion.

Yeah, the custom content ZIP files are supposed to be (key words, "supposed to", there) set up so that you target the Heartache directory to extract to.
Well this is interesting... Just passing to say to all of you hello for one last time, and found the "End of official support" message from flowerthief. But it doesn't really suprise me, i wanted to say that i will do my best to make custom content for the ones that are still interested in Heartache 101 with the little time i have (If i still have enough strength for that).

PD: The reason i said "hello for one last time" is because i spent around a month clearing my "wish list", because this past 18 of January i was diagnosticated with a terminal illness and the doctors said i only have around 5 months left.

@Belial: Official support may have ended, but, we are always looking for more custom content! It's a bit sad to hear about your illness, though. All I can really say to that is to just do as much as you can, or feel able to!
This is a really good game. I have played through once, and although I had the opportunity to get all the girls 100%ed, I only chose to pursue Riho's ending, which was very touching and well-written. The opportunity to add in new characters is a great idea, and potentially gives it endless replayability. What would be awesome is if there was a huge community actively releasing well-made new characters, but as it is at the moment, I only see a very limited amount on the game's official website's download page, although it wouldn't surprise me if there was an unofficial site somewhere that people had uploaded more to.

I'm not going to deny that the downloads on the official site, or on this site's finished content thread is pretty small. The official site in particular, since content larger than 10MB on the official site had to have a workaround in order for it to be included in the listing.

As for your intuition about there being an "unofficial" place where people upload content, well, all I know is about is the artistic thread, and it's various archives. Most content there is incomplete (hence, why it's not in the finished thread), but, one can get an idea of what people are not working on!

Though, saying that, there's probably a better way to find in-progress custom content. Aside from doing a post-search for character releases by RMN users that do not use their lockers.
Yoooooo, I loved it 9/10, not a tear shedder, but it almost made me cry.
hy, how to save the game? :o
