The information below is for testers, but anyone with bug reports, suggestions, feature requests, etc is of course welcome to post here.

Thanks for offering to help test the game. I hope you enjoy playing it despite it's imperfect state! I'm eager to hear feedback and criticism on pretty much every aspect of the game, but especially the following:

1. Gameplay
I think this is the most important thing, because if the core gameplay isn't fun who will care that the characters can be customized? Testers, please play the game and tell me honestly what you think. What aspects are fun and what aspects could be more fun? How is the difficulty? What things would you do to improve it? Of course please report any bugs you encounter.

2. Customization
Please mess around with the customization features; there's bound to be plenty of bugs and issues I haven't considered. You don't need to create content you would ever share with others. Just play around and see if you can do the things you're supposed to be able to do. Try creating a character or two and writing a little bit of story for her. Again, what you write doesn't have to be anything serious, but see if things really work.

3. Story & writing
Please give me constructive criticism on the story and the writing for the built-in characters. What do you think of the characters? If there are bits that you think should be rewritten for any reason, please don't hesitate to tell me. I realize some of the story (including the premise) may be corny, so maybe you have suggestions on how it could be better? Of course also report any bad spelling or typos or anything else that's off.

4. Documentation
Is the help file which explains how to do all the customization stuff easy to read and easy to understand? Please tell me if any parts aren't clear. I want the customization process to be easy and fun as much as possible.

5. Any other suggestions you have!
Don't hold back. If you have something to say which could help me improve the game I want to hear it.

Well it seems that nobody yet has gotten a good ending (a non-generic ending). This tells me that it might be too difficult or maybe unfair?

A good ending requires:
1. The character is in a state of Love or Lovesick
2. You have completed her story route

Everyone seems to be doing well with the first requirement.
The second requirement is tricky because you have to make some correct choices along the way AND some of those choices require that you pass an attribute check. Attribute checks are in multiples of 10; either 20, 30, 40, or 50. (So if you get an attribute up to 50, you'll pass any checks involving it in story events)

I suppose the problem is that it's not clear what attribute checks are coming up for a given character. Also, with the longer stories, you might simply be running out of time to complete them.

For the next release I'm going to make it a little easier to pass attribute checks by making it easier to raise attributes. I might also add a means of getting in-game hints for characters.

I didn't intend to put out a new release so soon, but there really have been a sleugh of bug reports and changes in the last two days. Testers, please grab the new release (v0.4).

I should have mentioned this earlier but if you encounter a serious bug I'd be greatly appreciative if you can send me a save file prior to the bug's occurrence. The game autosaves each day during the status screen where you can spend orbs so you can use that file. There are a few bugs that have been reported now which I've not able to reproduce and seeing the save file could help me out a ton.

I can see myself tweaking this game and adding new features for awhile to come, or for as long as people are interested in it, but I'll stop calling it a beta when we get to the point where any new releases will not render saves and records incompatible. There are still a few changes I'm considering that could possibly do that.

Here's some of the ideas for new features in consideration:
- "mental notes" about a character can be reviewed
- generic event for walking to school together
- support for BxB (only if there is interest)
- support for dual character endings
- Mouse support
- additional mini-games

The top two of those will likely make it into the game in the near future.

The new version, among other things, finally fixes the "script is hanging" error which people with slow computer sometimes encounter after the ending before or during the credits roll. Well, I think I fixed it. If anyone still gets that error at the end of the game, please let me know! I don't have any older computers around the house with which to test it on.

I found an error with Profiler v.2 Well, not so much an error but anyway. Relation ID is set to default to "classmate" and there is no option to clear that selection. So this profiler version forces you to create a relationship.
That was deliberate, but on second thought it makes more sense to remove that field from the window entirely unless a relation ID has been set. I also found a bug that prevents a profile from loading from a file with multiple profiles. So....

edit: never mind, more recent version up ahead

You guys both get tons of awesome points for doing this testing. As to how many points I mean by tons, I dunno, I'll let Drew Carey decide.

A million points is the number that's sometimes thrown around. Though, even by having this much, we're still tied for last.

I know a Who's Line is it, Anyway? reference when I see it.

*Edit: I didn't even get version 0.2! Oh well.
Aw crud, v0.3 is broken too. Hang on....

edit: I'm gonna cheat and say that last post wasn't really v0.3. This is: Character Customizer v0.3
Sorry for the carelesness. (can you tell when a person wants to go play his ps3?)

How's it broken? It worked fine enough for me! Well, outside the fact that I still can't listen to theme music still. Though the program auto closing after saving content is kinda annoying-ish.

what's on the gaming list for the night?
The auto-close was actually a fatal error that I just fixed it...I hope.

It still won't load music files? Do you get error messages to that effect? When you first launch the program, are you able to play the default music file "happy.mp3"?

@dude
Super Street Fighter IV, probably :)

I used to be getting an error message about "happy.mp3" (as that's the default, and the default action for the app is "new character") when the app was in the "custom" directory. I've since moved it into the base Heartache directory. The "Play", "Pause" and "Stop" buttons are still grayed out, and still do nothing, even when "happy.mp3" is on the queue. I have no clue what's up with that, but I want to take a break from this myself, to be honest.

It stays open after saving, so that's a good sign, at least!
Nothing like the thrill of seeing "Here comes a new challenger" flash across your screen!
I'm replaying fallout 3 to tide me over til skyrim. I'm wondering how they will top their previous masterpiece.

*edit*
a thought of the music issue. XP Pro is using what version of media player? Could their be some type of compatibility issue with win7's media player?

What is this, the what's gaming thread, or the Heartache 101 - Sour Into Sweet Beta Testing thread?

Just wondering.

*Edit:
Could their be some type of compatibility issue with win7's media player?

That's more like it! Er, I mean, I can play a song that I attributed to one of the characters I made in a test profile with whatever version of Media Player I've got. So that's not the issue, at least.
Have you tried the usual culprits of post xp problem makers?
Remove UAC, run as admin, compatibility mode set to xp sp3?

*edit*
norton anti virus also has a nasty tendency of blocking programs.
Actually, upon doing a little research, it turns out there is a known bug in the GUI toolkit I'm using such that the media load event isn't triggered correctly under Vista. Wxwidgets or at least wxruby hasn't been updated since 2009 so only option is to find a workaround for this situation. I can see that other people have found workarounds which is a good sign. I'll probably be sending you a PM later with an experimental build that might fix the problem for Vista users.

@dude
Funny that you mention that because I'm replaying through Oblivion myself right now to try and do all the guild quests I never finished. I want to get this done before Skyrim comes out because I got the feeling that once it does I'm not gonna wanna play Oblivion any more.
Character Customizer v0.4

The only difference between this and the last version is a fix for the media player not working on Windows 7 or Windows Vista. If there's no other bugs reported today I shall release this version.

When I started up v0.72 with Uchioniko, or at least the version you posted, I got the false error message immediately, and when I looked at the code it was obvious what I had done wrong (the wrong variable was used in a comparison). I can't explain why you don't get the same error, but if true, keep using v0.72 then.

Wanna know something humorous? I tried putting in Masako for a test-story with Mayu using version 0.72. The first test was without Masako's files in the main game's sub-directories. The game gave me a warning but ran anyway. As expected. However, I wanted to see the scene, as small as it was, play out. After I transferred in Masako's files, I got the error message that said that ID = 11 in uchioniko_profile.txt had herself as a relation. Which, as one observes the actual profile, is simply not true.

So, now that I've successfully replicated the error message with Uchioniko, I'm going to get the update to see if it's fixed!
It is a very dedicated tester who tries to replicate bugs he never encountered and which have since been fixed :D
(I'm not complaining about having that kind of a tester. Far from it)

I personally thought that the update was a waste of time, but I'm now glad it happened.

Anyway, I'm not getting that error message, but a different one. The game can't find "Masako/masako_profile.txt", nor "Masako\masako_profile.txt". Yes, I checked both types of slashes just to be through. Anyway, Masako's profile was certainly in the directory of "Profiles/Masako", so I tried putting her profile into the base "Profiles" directory. It worked, and I was able to see the test-scene with Mayu.

So, what do you make of this?
It's a bug. Thank you much for reporting it.
I'm having trouble with JUMP a command. I keep getting an error with the Story 102 Branch B JUMP command. Basically the system says it can't find the story to jump to and exits. It's probably something silly, but I can't figure it out.

The error message specifies that it can't find "baconstory.txt" whereas the JUMP line specifies "bacon story.txt". Seems like a parsing error. Funnily enough, clearing off the "IN bacon story.txt" part from those lines removes those errors. However, I would note that having a character have a "IN bacon story.txt" condition would get this error.

I also note that the profiles for Masako and 21 are not included. That makes the game think that all the ID=10" and "ID=21" lines are NPCs with the names of "10" and "21" respectively. The various SHOW commands, therefore, return errors. You'd need to include the profiles for those characters at the top of the file for the game to recognize them as characters that have tachie. Note that making a reference to a character's profile that's not in the base directory will return an error. For the moment, anyway.
Yep, a parsing error. Thank you for that. In this case the workaround is easy since the "IN bacon story.txt" part is unnecessary. As Marrend said, you can just delete that part.
