A Very Simple Question:

So in your personal opinion, do you care how many playable characters there are in a game? If so, what is your limit?

Thanks!

It depends on the writing, but I've not played many games where there's been a mass of characters that all feel different. The Suikoden series, with it's 108 Stars of Destiny, does it's best. As does Radiata Story with it's list of 144 friends. However, I've found that, 90% of the time, once the characters join the party, they loose all the charm/personality they had before they became party members.

So, in the end, I would recommend a relatively low number. The most I've tried to write for is six, and even then, I firmly believe that only one of those characters was written particularly well.
I enjoy a massive amount of playable characters. I agree with Marrend though, if you try for to many they can come out bland or not well written in.
How do you two feel about 7 permanent characters, but with optional characters available?

Sounds real good to me. Optional ones are always a plus in my book. Since they are in fact optional, they are just for fun and dont require as much story.

Nine total with seven permanents and two optional. Okay. Though, if one of those permanents isn't so permanent *cough*Aeris/Aerith*cough*, oh, excuse me! These allergies are quite a nuisance!
