Beyond the Gate
A game made for the RMN Summer Games

What is Beyond the Gate?
Addressing the contest's theme of surrealism, Beyond the Gate sees you playing as a young woman named Claire, who has terminal cancer. Throughout the course of the game, Claire will have to face the reality of her life being cut short as she walks a land existing between life and death, all the while being coaxed by a mysterious voice.

How Long is Beyond the Gate?
Beyond the Gate should take between 30 minutes and an hour for most players to complete.

When Can I Play It?
The game has been finished and has even been uploaded! A mod still needs to approve the download before it becomes available to the public however.

The Game Is Finished!

I have just finished uploading the full game, so once a mod approves it it'll be available for everyone to play! I will admit, at one point I didn't think I'd be able to release anything in time for the RMN Summer Games and almost dropped out, but I'm so glad I didn't!

Please, everyone, play the game, let me know what you think, and enjoy!

Sam, just out of curiosity, have you ever known anyone with terminal cancer? (And I don't mean a grandparent, unless it's a grandparent you're unusually close to.)

I ask only out of concern for the subject matter being handled with appropriate care and respect. Beyond that concern, this is an intriguing looking project.
I think it's handled well. I made sure not to focus on the specifics of the disease and the game deals more with the psychological ramifications of the patient and the impact it has on her relationship with her partner.
It's a very good game. The idea is very daring of the game, but the result is superb.

This game would have been 100x more effective had it not been for the battle system, which was tacky at best and detracted from the seriousness of the scenario (I don't think I was supposed to laugh when Daryl used "Commitment Issues", for example). The large number of encounter-able (is that a word?) enemies didn't help.

I really liked the graphics (originals? I couldn't tell), and the music, while not amazing, did its job. Try remaking it without use of the DBS and it'll probably be a sizeable improvement
Battles have never been my strong point ^^; Originally I was thinking that "Commitment Issues?" would reflect another of Claire's insecurities and that Doubt would be a suitable status effect for that, but I can see the humour in it.

As for the graphics, chipsets were mostly Theodore, charasets were me.

But yes, I agree the battle system could be vastly improved or replaced with something superior.
Downloading now. Read the review and seems like a game I would like to try out. Oh yeah and Kudos for finishing it off.

Very interesting game, here. I didn't mind the battle system that much, and the concept of defeating personal demons (Rather than thinking of them just as "foes that I can grind for Experience and Credits for", thought there was a bit of that line of thinking) worked for me. The rooms with the fuzzy look to them is a neat idea, certainly. However, I'd call this more an existential game (meaning that the game's more about questioning what the meaning of "life" and "death" are) than a surreal one.
