Reflections - Enjoying your own game, and thoughts on the craft of Gaming.

I played my own game, and I loved it.

This experience brought me to thinking about the whole mental process of creating new worlds. I think the main lesson I've learned is the last thing I've written in bold below.

---

It is about a year since I began developing Whaling Revolution, and a lot has changed.

Developing a game was something I did with mixed feelings of frustration and excitement. My relative lack of experience in developing held me back, but my desire to spin a tale that was both funny and interesting drove me forwards.

One I finished making it a few months ago I put it aside and moved on. Since then I have written a serious novel that I am currently in the process of editing. But last night a friend of mine started playing the game, and I watched the opening hours unfold with huge nostalgia. I remembered my time crafting the maps, the story and most of all the characters this time last year, and couldn't help but compare it to the relatively more dull process of creating imagery in prose.

Of course most of all I remembered the video review I received, lampooning the game for its story heavy opening, easy gameplay and 3rd party artwork. All completely fair of course, from some perspective at least. Everytime I see the opening sequence I can't help but hear the reviewer's voice building in outrage at each new element. It makes me smile.

Needless to say, approaching Pro Whaling some the standpoint of a gamer is not so apt. Pro Whaling is a story told through a game - a game that allows you to jump into the sea and punch whales. That was the true joy of the whole project: the huge freedom of being able to do whatever you want, and twist the story whatever way I pleased in the knowledge that the mere concept of the game itself was supervening the actual content: people would have liked it to some degree regardless of what I wrote. I believe this to be true of almost any game.

You could argue that this is why games have a lower standard of writing than prose, and I would probably agree. However I am of the as-yet untested belief that a well written game is a far more powerful a thing than a well written book. Once I'm bored of books I might return to the world of games and attempt to do just that: to do what games like Final Fantasy 7 and Bioshock did for me - provide a completely new culture to discover, explore, shape, and generally engage with in a way that feels real and changes my views of the real world just like a piece of literature might.

For me, I would like to conclude, Pro Whaling is that game. I know the characters well enough to feel at home with them on their adventure, but only because I wrote characters very close to my own thinking. To create a world that everyone can feel comfortable in is something else entirely.

I decided to write this whilst the game was on my mind. Now I shall put it aside again and go back to the other fictional worlds I'm trying to create elsewhere. I hope that one day the existence of this game, and the fun memories it contains, will spur me on to make something better.

So here is my advice for people trying to build their skills in creating new worlds: make them to suit yourself at first. Once you're okay with your world, let other people in. You are the god of everything you write, building, draw or program. It will be a piece of you once you make it, but to connect to other people you must leave room for their own fantasies. The more I think about this point, the more important I think it is.

---

Good luck to all game makers out there. I guess this is a tentative goodbye to the game making community for now, but I can't wait to some back.

Thanks for reading and have a good day!

Oh, and long live the Whaling Spirit! :)

So to new players: this is not a serious competitive game! Haha! It has a certain atmosphere of that, but really it's a ridiculous world filled with crazy characters, and all I'm offering is a chance to go along for the ride!

Ah well, that does explain it. When I saw the battlers I was like, ''what the hell?!''. I didn't get it was a joke game based on your description however :-).

I hope you work on something serious in the future with the same artist.

I would just like to say that the title rules. It's bringing a smile to my face every time I see it in the games list.

So is Ben Dowler a fictional person or a real person? Actually, no, don't tell me. It's better this way.

I figured that "Ben Dowler" was proto's true name, but, I suspect that it could be the name of this game's version of Moby Dick. Or, if the game is meant to be humorous, it could the name of the blue-haired girl in the title screen.

*Edit: Then again, the "About/Story" tab kills various theories...
@flowerthief and Marrend

Haha, no I am not the legendary Ben Dowler. If only! Ben Dowler is the person I was standing next to when I had the idea for the game - I think that's the original source of the name. Although of course in the game world Ben Dowler is also an unrelated character to the real person!

@Creation

I think I know what you mean about the description, I think I'll edit it a tad. So thanks for pointing that out! I do work on serious projects with the artist too, but that's mostly prose fiction. Writing a game was like a holiday from writing the survival-thriller thing I was doing before!

Ok, I judged this game by its cover, thinking it would be fairly good considering the art. Once I started playing, I realized I was dead wrong... THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE EPIC! Granted I only played for about an hour, I had chuckled a few times at some of the dialogue and the Greenpeace "leader's" (at least he is up to where I am) name! I'm glad I gave this game a shot; I'm sure anyone with a sense of humor and whom enjoys a good old fashioned RPG will love this game!
Hmm. I'd prefer to actually complete the game before writing a review but I do have to say, that game has the making of being an amazing series(er. if it isn't already.)

Pros:
Goofy storyline. Can't go wrong with goofy storylines, there's enough seriousness to it for most rpg enthusiasts. Plenty of humour from everyone in the game(although I do think some of it IS just a bit too much for the less... internet abused?). I will add that most of the storyline is fairly unpredictable (outside of the spoiler explicitly stated in the title of the game :P)
Balanced game difficulty, this isn't one of those easy rpgs.
You will not end up just tapping Enter to attack and get through random battles, you WILL need to use/abuse items to heal up after battles.
Likewise, stats gained from leveling(and the levels are fairly spaced, don't expect a ton of levels out of grinding) are fairly minute, equipment actually matters a decent bit in the game.
Characters are all fairly unique as well and have their parts to play during boss battles. There's passive abilities as well though I'm unsure how to check who has what abilities.
Between Limit, Overdrives as well as Spirit charge/uses, there's a LOT of options for characters to be of use.
Ease of switching characters both in and out of battles.
Beastiary is fairly helpful though a switch between entries option would be nice(as in to the next monster, not another page of the stats of the same monster.)
Soundtrack was masterfully put together featuring music that i'd say 9 out of 10 times fit the mood well and was memorable. Although RPG freaks may find themselves remembering the games some of the music came from :P

Cons:
Minor spellchecking stuff. Not unexpected given how large the script is/appears to be. Setting text speed to Instant can result in some text being cut off, particularly apparent early in the game and during long cutscenes. Not game breaking but fairly annoying at times.
Random battles tend to be quite frequent given the size of the dungeons(i.e the rate is fine. The dungeon's size + the rate is a bit much). Mind this is offset against the price of goods and the amount of exp needed to level up.
Minor grinding(alternatively, getting lost on one of the maps may suffice =D) may be required to get cash as the price of weaponry gets quite high once the game gets started.
Very very minor con, some of the humour does go just a bit overboard methinks. Man chasing the dog with the tag beastiality made me raise my eyebrows to say the least. ... Not to mention half of what Manfred says is just... yeah.

Extras:
I'm quite fond of the artwork in the game, all of the portraits and the enemy bosses are drawn well.(in my opinion anyways.)
@Oblic and mechafanboy

I'm really glad you're liking the game guys! Thanks for all the comments mecha, I think that's a very fair evaluation of it all - the pros are exactly what I hoped people would think, and the cons are things that are going to vary from person to person, but hopefully they are inoffensive enough that most people can enjoy it. And yes, Manfred's opinions on things are usually eyebrow raising, but I've always tried to make the the rest of the crew keep him in check before he looses whatever dignity he has left!
This game seems interesting I will give it a try. By the way, in the town of Ray there is a guy who takes my party to hyperspace, is there anything there? I keep walking around and cant find anything.

Some of the cats drop permenant stat increasing items if you manage to talk to them. It's the ones moving slightly slower than the rest. Eventually you'll just be teleported out, but can go back in indefinitely to get more stat ups if you really want!

Thanks for playing!

Thanks that's very helpful. I assumed it was just a trap. I am now stuck trying to figure out a 3 spaced code for the door where a guy went on a honeymoon and changed it. I am in Pacem Virdis and trying to reach a control room or something. What is the code? I just cant figure it out. (There was also a mention of a musical note to open something later on, which I cant figure out either).

Yeah quite a few people have asked about that. It's possible work it out by looking up some of the clues online, but otherwise here's the solution:

1st: Unbound Oxygen Molecules in a Cummingtonite molecule: 22
Subtract
2nd: First two digits in year of Telsa's birth: 18
Multiply by
3rd: First number with three syllabals: 11
Multiply by
4th: Secret Clue - 'Always Double Up': 2

Final Answer = 88

Hope that helps, you've made good progress with the game!
Yeah it worked. Thanks so much, I guess my mind is not working properly now. So far I like the game, it just some of the puzzles take time (until I realize how easy they are later).
I need help again. I am in the spirit realm number rooms trying to figure out the puzzles. I reached platform three where it says "Every ascension has three sides" and I was able to cool 5 fires by using these numbers (1,3,6,21,15). I am trying to figure out the number for the rest of the fires but none of the divisible numbers of 3 seems to work. Is there a strategy to doing this puzzle?

It's a certain number sequence. Try searching for 'triangular numbers' online ;) that's what the three sides clue was about.
I just finished the game, and let me know say it was fun and interesting. I enjoyed playing the game. The only think that I have a question with is when I viewed the boss list at the end I noticed the final entry is empty even after defeating the final boss, is this intentional or did I miss some boss. Also, is it possible to have different path in the game?(I noticed that in the game pictures you have Raster joining the team and I never got a chance to recruit him).

Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah there is a secret boss you can fight, but it's both very hard to find and very hard to beat so I wouldn't worry about it. And yes there are several non-linear bits where the decisions change which characters you get - you can get Raster if you choose to stand and fight at the command centre on Anemone, and you can get either Mauser or Villiat depending on your decision in the airship towards the end.
I like this game because story and etc very cool.
i hope you will make BDPW 2 as soon .
thanks tom divine. :)
