The download will take you through to a rapidshare page. Hit the middle of three big options you see to start the download immediately. Once you have it, extract the rar, run the blue exe inside it, then move the Audio file into game files that appear, overwriting anything that's already there.

You need to download all three parts here before the extractor will work.

Reflections - Enjoying your own game, and thoughts on the craft of Gaming.

I played my own game, and I loved it.

This experience brought me to thinking about the whole mental process of creating new worlds. I think the main lesson I've learned is the last thing I've written in bold below.

---

It is about a year since I began developing Whaling Revolution, and a lot has changed.

Developing a game was something I did with mixed feelings of frustration and excitement. My relative lack of experience in developing held me back, but my desire to spin a tale that was both funny and interesting drove me forwards.

One I finished making it a few months ago I put it aside and moved on. Since then I have written a serious novel that I am currently in the process of editing. But last night a friend of mine started playing the game, and I watched the opening hours unfold with huge nostalgia. I remembered my time crafting the maps, the story and most of all the characters this time last year, and couldn't help but compare it to the relatively more dull process of creating imagery in prose.

Of course most of all I remembered the video review I received, lampooning the game for its story heavy opening, easy gameplay and 3rd party artwork. All completely fair of course, from some perspective at least. Everytime I see the opening sequence I can't help but hear the reviewer's voice building in outrage at each new element. It makes me smile.

Needless to say, approaching Pro Whaling some the standpoint of a gamer is not so apt. Pro Whaling is a story told through a game - a game that allows you to jump into the sea and punch whales. That was the true joy of the whole project: the huge freedom of being able to do whatever you want, and twist the story whatever way I pleased in the knowledge that the mere concept of the game itself was supervening the actual content: people would have liked it to some degree regardless of what I wrote. I believe this to be true of almost any game.

You could argue that this is why games have a lower standard of writing than prose, and I would probably agree. However I am of the as-yet untested belief that a well written game is a far more powerful a thing than a well written book. Once I'm bored of books I might return to the world of games and attempt to do just that: to do what games like Final Fantasy 7 and Bioshock did for me - provide a completely new culture to discover, explore, shape, and generally engage with in a way that feels real and changes my views of the real world just like a piece of literature might.

For me, I would like to conclude, Pro Whaling is that game. I know the characters well enough to feel at home with them on their adventure, but only because I wrote characters very close to my own thinking. To create a world that everyone can feel comfortable in is something else entirely.

I decided to write this whilst the game was on my mind. Now I shall put it aside again and go back to the other fictional worlds I'm trying to create elsewhere. I hope that one day the existence of this game, and the fun memories it contains, will spur me on to make something better.

So here is my advice for people trying to build their skills in creating new worlds: make them to suit yourself at first. Once you're okay with your world, let other people in. You are the god of everything you write, building, draw or program. It will be a piece of you once you make it, but to connect to other people you must leave room for their own fantasies. The more I think about this point, the more important I think it is.

---

Good luck to all game makers out there. I guess this is a tentative goodbye to the game making community for now, but I can't wait to some back.

Thanks for reading and have a good day!

Oh, and long live the Whaling Spirit! :)

Really? You just need to hit the 'save to my computer' button that comes up when you click it and it should start straight away. I can potentially provide a mediafire link or other alternative if nothing seems to work.
yes but it keeps saying rapidshare inactive for some reason :( I would appreciate a medafire link it's what I normally use and never had problems so far. thanks alot

Okay, I'll see what I can do. I'll send you a message when it's ready and if you're still interested you can give it a go then.

Thanks!

Other people might have the same problem, so it's a good idea anyway. Should be ready in half an hour or so.

You're right, because the cover(title screen) doesn't seem to resemble the game at all. Like I brought this up before but lol I see this picture that screams "WOAH WHALING SIMULATOR THERE SHE BLOWS FUCK YEAH" yet in the other screenshots you're fighting ff8 soldiers? idk I feel like your game would have been more appealing if you just narrowed the concept down to a very simple idea "a game about whaling, where you hunt down whales!" Not all this comedy rpg satirical war against greenpeace stuff with the occasional battle with whale.png monster graphic.

It just seems like another "Cop Dog" bait and switch thing to me.

Haha, yes I see exactly what you mean, but I think that may be due to misleading choice of screenshots more than anything else! I'll see if I can get a few more ones that aren't of random moments.

I have actually made a more pure whaling game, Ben Dowler's Pro Whaling 2010; this game is the third incarnation of the idea. The earlier two were much less story based, but they didn't really elaborate on the basic RPGVX engine so weren't all that interesting to play.

And rest assured, battles with soldiers occur very infrequently. This game is actually about whaling fundamentally, and everything you do is related to it in some way, but it is also about revolution, and the people who make it happen - thus it does have a substantial story.

Thanks for your thoughts, I think I should be able to make things a bit clearer.

353 MB, that's pretty huge. Anyway, I'm downloading right now and I'll test it out as PoF. I hope it's worth the wait (and the bandwith).

Whoa, I wasn't expecting video, very nice! I guess I should try to clarify you questions from the video. I guess the main thing is something you very nearly concluded yourself: this game is a joke! Moreover it is aimed at people who have little to no gaming experience, and hence is extremely easy and hand-holdy to begin with. ATB is very intimidating for people not used to it, so I wanted to start off very slowly.

Perhaps it was just the initial artistic presentation that raised expectations for a semi-professional game! This project is a farcical story told through a game. It's not a game designed to please people who want hardcore gameplay. Hence the relatively easy combat and occassional makeshift battler.

But of course you are absolutely right if you look at it from an experienced gamer's point of view, and in the context of this forum all your comments are absolutely fair. I can't do any better though, as I have very, very little experience with coding and it took everything I had and hundreds upon hundreds of hours to make this game.

So to new players: this is not a serious competitive game! Haha! It has a certain atmosphere of that, but really it's a ridiculous world filled with crazy characters, and all I'm offering is a chance to go along for the ride!

Thanks to Creation for an awesome review, I was really just expecting a few sentences in a message!
Haven't gotten very far in it yet but I have to say this, you need to have more text breaks I think, I set the text option to instant in the options menu and I'm getting a lot of text not being shown(or rather, being shown too quickly.) due to your dialogues not fitting into one text box.

You may want to look into fixing that, it's fairly annoying.

Edit: I should mention though, that parody games of serious games are always fun to play through, what does ruin it somewhat is having played VP quite extensively, it makes me find Urrsa a bit odd(not to mention, the voice contradicts her ingame character imo.) thus far though, i'm looking forward to being entertained throughout the game

You're absolutely right, but I hope you can deal with it. I became a lot more careful with regard to long texts as I went along, but I know you there are certainly bits you can miss in the opening sections. I don't know if there'd be any easy way to fix that, another than using the non-instant text and just reading it as it scrolls past - it scrolls fairly quickly I'd say (too fast some people have said.)

Haha, I apologise, the voice acting was chosen assuming people would not have played the games it 'borrows' from (this game is basically aimed at borderline-casual gamers). You're right about Urrsa, she was always my least favourite voice part, but I couldn't find anything else more appropriate so I just rolled with it. You'll be able to switch her out of the party early on to avoid any future annoyance!
No worries, I've had funkier experiences with RPGMaker2k games.
