Eternal destiny

Eternal destiny is THE classic rpg game: Go out be the hero, defeat the bad guys and save the world from a megalomaniac all before breakfast. Eternal destiny Is a moderately enjoyable and decently executed version of this concept, and for a first attempt highly respectable

Gameplay: 2/5
The gameplay in Eternal destiny is a highly conventional Rpg. You travel around several cities and towns fighting monsters to gain gold and experience so that you can train up to defeat bosses as the story progresses. However a great disappointment to me while playing it was the lack of interaction you could have with items, people, and things not directly related to the objective. In many places there would be areas full of interesting objects but which you could do nothing with. In almost all cases they didn't even display a characters thought on it, something that could be easily scripted and repeated for like objects such as bookshelves or doors. In fact even some of the residents of towns ignored me completely

No wonder business is bad, half these guys are selling nothing but cold shoulder!

Story: 4/5

The premise of this story is quite simple and is executed well. You are a prince of your kingdom who is required to go out and protect it, and indeed the entire world from evil power-hungry queens and the odd sadistic demon. Through your travels you meet up with and are joined by likeminded characters whom are won over by your noble quest (or whom are simply browbeaten into tagging along for the ride!)
Combat: 3/5
Combat in eternal destiny tends towards the easy side during the beginning of the game and can end up totally broken by the middle. It utilises the side on view that most rpg maker games use and the skills/items are decently well balanced (with exception the insane, 750,000+ damage dealing Omni stab!)

There is one horrific problem with it though... vitamins. About mid-way through the game you will reach a port town that sells vitamins permanently boosting your stats, each costing 200 gold and with a cap of 9999 for health and mp and 999 for all other stats. Now the problem with this is that by now you will have over 40,000 gold and a little later on you will get a massive, 300,000 gold drop from a boss! As a result your characters will easily go from hitting 80-1000 at most to dealing over 3000 damage with regular attacks! Let me just make this clear... Don’t Take The Drugs!

While combat is mainly cookie cutter there is one part I really liked: Transformation. Certain characters have the ability to change form into dragons which switches up not only their appearance but their abilities too. Be careful about doing so though, as you can’t change back till you win the fight or die!

Fighting alongside a freaking dragon, How cool is this!

Writing: 1/5
Eternal destiny is let-down heavily by a lack of dialog; and by cheap clichéd dialog where it does have some. This was a real disappointment to me as it meant the story had very little depth to it. In fact, a lot of the time I didn't know where I was meant to be going!

Presentation:

Audio: 4/5
The bgm for this game is very good and well suited to purpose. I also enjoyed the fact that some of the tracks were imported rather than being the normal default RPG maker music.

Graphics 3/5
While none of the graphics in eternal destiny are original they are used to a decent standard and I felt the lack of originality didn't hamper my enjoyment of the game to much.

Summary
All in all Eternal destiny is a nice if simple RPG with a few flaws that prevent it from getting a higher score. If you can get over the lack of interaction and clichéd dialog then I would say the game is definitely worth a play.

Recomendations for future projects:
  • Try to add greater depth to conversation and increase the quantity of dialog tenfold. I'd like to see the characters really develop together over time and reveal more throughout their conversations.

  • Make sure not to add permanent stat boosts, Or if you do be sure that they cost enough gold that you have to grind to get more than a few

  • Increase interactivity. If you walk up to a bookshelf have the character say something simple. Maybe: Its packed with books on various subjects. None of them look very interesting. Or Its full of sappy romance novels… Simple things that drastically increase the realness of the game
