Snow Got Mad Skills

After Man is a survival / horror game for RPG Maker XP created by SnowOwl.

Story:

Earth can no long sustain life. Humans are forced to leave their home planet in search for a new home. When you wake up from the cryogenic chamber you find that the rest of the crew has gone missing. The set up for the story is pretty simple, but I think the way its delivered makes it more impactful. And the intro scene with the flying spaceship is pretty awesome. In addition there are 3 alternate endings, depending on the DNA sequence you choose. I sort of wish there was a warning to save here so that you could potentially play all endings without replaying the whole game though. I would say overall the story is slightly above average.

Graphics:

Well its obvious that SnowOwl has some pretty mad skills in this department. I think for the most part I enjoyed the graphics. I thought the starting area with the checkered hallway was a bit odd, but when you get to the furnace room and some other areas in the ship its like "Hell Yeah." I would say overall that 85%-90% of the graphics are in the excellent department.

(One of my favourite areas in the game.)

Sound:

To go along with the atmospheric graphics you haves some pretty good background music. The important aspect is that it all fits together well. I was also pleased with the sound effects. The sound the character makes while walking through the water is probably one of the best used sound effects I have heard in a long time. I have no complaints in terms of sound in this game.

Gameplay:

Imagine something like Deadspace and Metroid mixed together... Your on a spaceship and you need to progress further. But in order to do so you need to collect items and avoid dangerous monsters. There's a lot of backtracking. And as you start to get closer to your goal more dangers appear to get in your way. You need to know the layout of this ship pretty well. Knowing where to go when you get an item is key to completing this game. What makes the gameplay interesting is the atmosphere that is set by the graphics and the sound. Without that the game would be just a list of menial tasks. During the gameplay I did encounter some strange events / bugs, but there was nothing that really broke the game. I think the worst thing about the gameplay may have been the character's movement. I found it to be a tad slow. And in instances where you need to avoid monsters it can be difficult to maneuver.

(This monster starts a bit to close to this door in my opinion.)

Overall:

If your looking for a short game with good atmosphere this may be the game for you. Game players who enjoy horror games will love this game. And even players who like RPGs should find something to appreciate about this. I think this game is worth anyone's time, even if it is just to enjoy those awesome graphics. I have no problem giving this game my approval with a 4 / 5.

I'm glad you liked this ol' classsic of mine, especially since I made some upgrades to it just a year ago. That proves it was worth it. Did you play through all the endings despite having to replay the game? I guess most people will have a varying impression of the ending, depending on the ending they get.

I choose the cave man guy (who ended up being eaten.) I thought that since you spend a lot of time underground it might be the appropriate choice. I watched a bit of the lets play so I know the other endings are different. It would have been cool to have an option at the end to transport back to the DNA room to choose a different ending. And whatever happened to the main character?
What happens to the main character is left to your imagination. One ending hints at what happens, and in the others...
Also transporting you back to the DNA room would indeed have been a neat option, I didn't think of that.
