Reflex Challenge: Press Z to read review!

I don’t have much of an intro blurb here: I wanted to do a review for the December Review challenge and I’d noticed Journeyman buzzing on the front page, so it was chosen to be my unfortunate victim.

I’ll freely admit that this isn’t my usual type of game (what with the collecting and the crafting and the recipes and the OY VEY~), but from what I have played that’s similar (Minecraft, Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing come to mind), I figured I’d enjoy it! Unfortunately, I didn’t really like it that much. I do think, however, that’s there’s enough raw potential in here to craft into a solid game.

Well then, let’s dig in!

Gameplay:

I’m gonna tackle this in pieces, because I have a lot of material to cover here, and I don’t want to leave anything out!

Harvesting:

Harvesting in Journeyman is pretty simple: you interact with an event, and a little timing minigame pops up. You press Z when the cursor lines up with a target in the centre of the screen, and BOOM, you’re in business, item harvested. Some harvesting events require you to have an axe, a fishing pole, or a pickaxe before you can attempt them.

Sounds cute and fun, right? Well, it is...the first time.

Unfortunately, this is the only minigame used when harvesting, and it gets very old, very fast. Not only that, but it’s unnecessarily frustrating for the player when they’re, say, trying to pick something up off the ground, miss the target, and lose their chance at nabbing the item. Oh yeah, also, if you're swapping between fishing and woodcutting, you need to change your equipment around. Every single time.

Get used to this.

I think these issues are easily fixable, though! For one, remove the need to change equipment whenever you need a tool to harvest something like fish, firewood, ore, etc. There’s really no need for this, and it only serves to frustrate the player and add in an extra step to what should otherwise be a quick and painless experience, especially since it uses the weapon slot.

As far as the minigame goes, I recall reading that the game dev found this type of minigame fun and addicting. Now, this can be true, but when it’s used for every single event ever, it gets to be a little too much! Aspects of a game are fun in moderation, but when you have too much of a good thing, it becomes monotonous and decidedly not fun. I’d recommend removing the minigame from most events, and only keeping it for a few, such as fishing. I could see the timing mini game working for that! Flower picking...? Not so much.

Crafting:

I don’t really have much to say about this, so I’ll just leave it as yup, crafting. It’s a thing, you do a lot of it, it functions correctly and isn’t broken. The interfaces are pretty easy to read and navigate, so that’s a plus!

Oh, right – it was a little annoying how, when I was trying to mix me some potions, I had to mix them all individually. Really, I just wanted to make a buttload of potions so I wouldn’t die the second I stepped outside, and having to plug the same ingredients in 10+ times got really irritating. If there is a way to, say, automatically mix the max amount of THINGS~ and I missed it, you should probably leave a little note or something in the Alchemy menu (or any other systems that use the same menu).

Combat/Exploration:

This was frustrating for a few reasons.

First of all, battles ripped me into tiny pieces. I’m mentioning this first as it was what eventually made me give up playing.

Fuck these wolves, oh GOD

The combat in this game is keyboard-smashingly difficult and in no way optional, even though the game dev advertised that it would be. This sucked a lot of my potential enjoyment out of the game! For starters, Gordon was so slow and fragile in battle, it took the weakest enemies literally 1-2 turns to smush him into ground beef. Now, I’m all for punishingly hard battles, but I do think every game needs to give the player the opportunity to get used to combat before shit gets real! I think the best thing to do here is to make the battles on the world map easy as pie, so the player can punch monsters in the face, get some starter items and easily travel between locations. This also has to potential to lull the player into a false sense of security, so when they finally DO enter a more difficult location...well. Shit gets real.

My other issue with combat was... well, lemme just quote Max McGee for a sec:

author=Max McGee
* Monsters outside will fucking eat you.
+Craft some armor and weapons.
+Craft some other stuff and sell it to get some armor and weapons.
* Even with armor and weapons they fucked you up.
+Craft better armor and weapons.
+Craft some healing potions or food to fix yourself.
+Craft some spells to toast monsters or heal yourself.
+Craft some other stuff to buy one of the above.

At first glance, this seems like pretty good game flow, right?

Nope.

See, to get to the supplies to make better weapons, healing potions, spells and what not, you need to fight monsters or go places where there are monsters that will eat your face. I had what I’m fairly certain is the best equipment I could get before I headed out of town for the first time, and I STILL got my ass handed to me. It made for a pretty frustrating experience!

I think changing how monsters are handled would improve this game immensely. This includes altering combat (I really don’t think field map monsters should be sticking you full of harmful status effects before you have access to effective healing items and skills, but that’s just me), and also changing how encounters are approached! If I remember right, someone suggested coming up with a way to trick and trap monsters. I think this is a fabulous idea, and I know sneaking around and luring monsters into traps and picking through their corpses for loose change would be fabulously fun to me.

Finally, there were some issues with lag that hampered my ability to navigate the second town. This would be easily fixed by chopping said town up into pieces or making it a lot smaller. I don’t really see why it needs to be so big, given that there are only a few buildings you can go into. The lag also affected the timing minigame, which got to be super frustrating – having the timing off because of the game randomly speeding up or slowing down was a major turn off.

(And because it’ll probably come up – my computer isn’t especially new, but it’s not freakishly old, either, and can run all but the most event heavy VX games without that much lag.)

Writing:

There’s not really much to say here, as this isn’t a plot heavy game. However, there are quite a few writing related things, so let me quickly address those.

First off, the humor was okay, but it didn’t really hold my interest. I feel like it fell into the trap that a lot of humorous RPG maker games fall into, and that’s resorting to curse words, breaking the fourth wall, Casanova wannabe heroes... you get the idea. I’m not saying these things can’t be done well, but I do feel like they’re overused, and Journeyman didn’t really put a fresh or interesting spin on any of them. This was especially grating in item descriptions – while a couple of them were cute (the rope, in particular, stands out in my mind), I feel like actually describing what the items do or what they can be used for in crafting would be a better use of the space.

The books were... well, I wanted to read them, because I’m sure they were filled with great info, but after button mashing my way through the weapons one, I didn’t want to risk being there for hours! I think an image based and/or easily escapable way of handling the books would improve this a great deal.

The plot was simple, cute, and made sense. It tied into the gameplay, which was great! I didn’t really care so much for the main character, but he doesn’t talk enough for this to be a big deal.

Finally, I guess this fits in here – the pacing of the intro is bad. You have difficulty settings, then the fake loading screen, then the opening credits, then the opening cutscene... it takes entirely too long, and ended up irritating me more than engaging me. I say cut the loading screen and opening credits, and let the player jump right into the thick of it instead of forcing them to sit through a bunch of stuff they don’t need to see to understand what’s going on.

Aesthetics:

The first thing that really comes to mind here is audio. I’m not a fan of the RTP music, but if you’re gonna use them, I say keep it consistent. Either use only RTP tracks, or none at all. Journeyman has an awkward blend of RTP music and songs from elsewhere, and it was very noticeable. As far as sound effects go, the text blipping noise got ridiculously grating after the first five seconds of hearing it. Either change it or get rid of it, because it’s not doing the game any favours. Other than that, there were a lot of RTP sound effects that, again, clashed with the non-RTP sound effects.

For visuals, I was a little disappointed that the original art work wasn’t being used in game at all. I say, if you have original art, use the heck out of it! There weren’t really enough sprites to judge, but they seemed pretty standard RTP fare, and the animations were clean, so no complaints here. I liked the battler graphics, though – they were very cute! (Although, the wolves didn’t really match the rest of the monsters…? That may be the blood dripping in my eyes and paranoia playing tricks on me, though.)

The mapping was okay – it was easily navigable, but there were minor errors here and there, and the second town (as I already mentioned) was too big.

Conclusion:

Overall, I didn’t have fun, and this didn’t end up being my kind of game! Like I said, though, there’s a bundle of potential here and a bunch of great ideas waiting to explode all over the place.

I'm going to leave this unrated for now, because there's so little to go on, but if this was the quality of the finished product, I'd give it 1/5 stars.

I hope this wasn't too discouraging! Keep at it, and I look forward to seeing how this develops, and if I end up liking it next time. :3

Great review, you pretty much echoed my experience on this demo.

The behavior on display within this thread is unacceptable in a community that has been trying for quite some time to have higher behavioral standards than most video game-related sites. This goes for several people who have commented. Consequently, this review may end up being locked for an indefinite period. I do appreciate the posts by users like Creation, who maintained a level of calmness and civility throughout the discussion.

Max is at fault for instigating the mud slinging, but several others are equally at fault for taking the bait.

All the negative comments are the inevitable fallout of years of disrespectful behavior and quite frankly it's good to see that kind of person brought down a few pegs. There is no need for arrogance on that scale.

I don't think its "immorral" as what you seem to be suggesting. If a bully at school is picking on a little nerd with glasses for no reason, that's immoral and you should stop it. If your peers are picking on a guy who (for years apparently, I haven't been around all that long) has been acting as insultingly immature as this and has JUST TOLD ALL OF US TO GO FUCK OURSELVES, that is not immoral. It's justified. And he is now fair game whether you like it or not. Life isn't all holding hands and sunshine. People are gonna speak their minds when they've been insulted and argue.

This kind of behavior is unprofessional and is not acceptable. If you would like to discuss the merits of this game or this review (as DE and Creation were doing), you may do so. If you are just here to fan the flames, please kindly click the back button.

*Heh, what can I say? I can't help myself in these situations. I'll just cut that out.

I swear, this is why we can't have nice things.

Everyone, chill the hell out.

It is a game. On the internet.

Chill the hell out.

Let the flames die on this one before the mods pop in.

demonlord, thank you for your level-headedness. You're a testament to the community at its best.
The Holidays bring out the better (or worst) in all of us.
Guys, this is getting out of hand. Sauce has his valid points...this whole mess is just adding fuel to the fire...and de...while I can understand what your trying to do, emmy can handle herself.

Here's my opinion to turns things around (hopefully). While I've been watching the game. I havn't really played it yet since it's not my style of gameplay. I rarely comment before playing...but seeing this whole mess...I'll make the exception.

Emmy wrote a well written review, who max took out of context because it was an outdated demo, but it was probably the only demo up when emmych downloaded the game. Am I on the mark so far? Anyways, emmych did her part and even left it unrated knowing it wasn't the final version of the game, and seeing it looks like any of her reviews, I seriously doubt there was any conspiracy as it was put.

Max wrote a raged induced essay on a whim (I don't know him personally, so I could be wrong about the whim), because either he didn't like the review, he had a bad day, or for some other unknown reason. Now I admit it was uncalled for, I don't think all the negative comments helped toward his response.

In the end, I don't presume to know max's plans (though I would enjoy seeing him do another story based one, but people change, so I won't hold my breath), but he should probably comment on this whole mess when hes more calm. I'd advise letting the flames die down a bit, and hopefully max can respond in a more rational manner. Otherwise, if the fights continue to get out of hand, then a mod would have to get involved.

The comments on the game itself...that will wait till I actually play it (which could be awhile). Max, whatever route you choose to take, I wish you luck with your game. I probably won't be replying..cause that'd ruin the whole point of this post.

Edit: Also on a less serious note...this is coming from a demonlord of all people. What is the world coming too?

I'm not saying you're defending Max, I'm countering your point about people being tools to Max just because he's Max and tricking him into flipping out. They're simply tired of Max acting the way he does and react accordingly.

The popcorn bit is meant to be ironic, I doubt anyone is really entertained by these... events.

EDIT: what does "your demographic" have to do with this review or Max? It isn't your game that generates such comments, so... why that bit?
Please stop acting like I'm defending Max. He's a tool. Wow I've said it a third time now in here? You don't need to explain to me how big of a tool he is. I get it.

My point, AGAIN, is that it's turned into an exercise of getting the tool to act a fool. Hell, some people here have admitted that, and they're "gettin' their popcorn ready' for it. And that's fucked up.

Which is why I said this:

"Aw hell yeah, it's another bad review for Max. I gotta see what happens! HAHA, yes he did it! Shitstorm incoming! Let me egg him on!"

"Oh god, Max's game was awful. What's that? A review for the horrible game? Let me check it out. Huh?! How dare he get upset! Ingrate. Let me show my moral superiority!"

Let me tell you this - if one of your friends is being a douche to another one of your friends, at some point you say "fuck it", stop being passive, and confront him. I used to defend Max, or at least not participate in these quarrels, but his latest behavior was the straw to break the camel's back. He's been shitting on people giving him honest, good-intended feedback for years (although there's been some spite in the past, I admit - hello, Karsuman!), is it a wonder some got tired of it and threw the shit back at him?

If he doesn't like this place, if he feels he's being persecuted and treated unfairly, why does he choose to stay and be part of the community? I don't get it. If he's after hosting space and downloads, he can just pop from time to time to drop a new game and quietly retreat to the shadows. And yet he argues with others all the time. Is he a masochist? Does he enjoy it despite what he says?
Michael Bay is. Just a really bad one.

Anyway, Max is a pretty big tool. I've said this before and in here. My point is... don't pretend you're not. This is directed at the people piling on. I didn't say a word about the reviewer. Or about how bad Max's reaction was. You're egging him on intentionally.

Your reaction to criticism entices other members to press your buttons. They’ve probably noticed you reply to every single comment and that you takes things very personally which makes you an ideal target. Just letting you know from an external point of view.

This pretty much sums it up. I'm on the flip side saying... so you acknowledge that people target him. For the reaction, of course. And somehow you think that's okay...

The point of reviews is to present pros and cons of the game. If he doesn't care, he shouldn't read reviews or at least refrain from commenting on them. Furthermore, if he didn't want feedback, he wouldn't have released a demo and went straight for the full game. I never said I don't acknowledge the existence of the percentage of RM users that only want to fool around in the program and don't expect to spend hours on end making a good game, you're pulling this out of your ass. I actually like such people and have nothing against them, but the problem is Max is not one of them. On many occasions did he say he wants to make a popular game, and yet does all he can to NOT make a popular game. Then jumps at reviewers.

Max, obviously, does not fit into this category.

Reading comprehension. Try it.

So, it's back to "I do it my way even if it sucks and everyone says a simple alternative would be better, just because?" Cool.

This ignores my demographic. You said. Hence, I'm not "pulling this out of my ass."

No one is calling Max names, nor is anyone jumping at him for no reason. He's always the first to fling the stone. Max deleted his first comments to this review, but there are some juicy bits in his last one:

"(...)I found this review disingenuous and disrespectful. The former because it gives a rating in spite of claiming not to (merry Christmas to me, lol, 1/5 stars)."

He responds in this manner to every single less than 4-star review. When he constantly questions reviewers' qualifications and objectivity, yet he thinks himself the perfect designer, how are you supposed to react?

"That's borderline trolling, to me. It is obvious that the reviewer was obscenely prejudiced against the game before they even gained control of the character, because they gave the character a grotesque non-name."

Which was in fact not intentional.

"If you want the Trade Skills submenu to be scripted, then script it in a way that is currently better than it's evented."

What to add, what to add... I got nothing.

"Everyone always has complaints, no one EVER takes even a second to post any kind of positive acknowledgement or encouragement when one of their complaints has been corrected or addressed."

As if he expects the person to send him a card or something. Max himself never thanks for feedback, even if it leads to changing the game for the better, but he complains about it a lot, as we all well know.

"This particular aspect of the game has reached the point where further discussion is no longer productive at this time."

In other words, I have a 4-year writing degree and am the only person even remotely qualified to discuss this. Thanks for the quote, ghost, I remember this :)

"It is excruciatingly obvious the degree to which the success or failure or popularity or lack thereof of any game on a site like this is fully unrelated to its actual quality or merits."

Keep on slandering fellow developers' works, I'm sure Neok feels the same way after pouring thousands of hours into AAG. His game is shit and is only popular on RMN 'cause he's part of the coterie, he knows it full well and can't sleep at night.

Dude! How can you not be angry at a person who says things like these every single time he releases a game and gets a review? Max becomes hyper aggressive every time someone disagrees with his design choices or criticizes any part of his game. Is it a wonder others respond with aggression? Are you not seeing this?

A person who practices any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, novelist, poet, or filmmaker.
Right off Merriam Webster. Creative arts, writing, film? You know like how musicians are called artists? In no way, shape or form, is RM not a creative work.

I get it, Michel Bay is an artist. I don't think there's any point in discussing this matter further, especially since it has nothing to do with the matter at hand.

Personally, I won't care to make much any changes to my game if criticized. If you don't like it, too bad, try another one. I'm not here to make the perfect game, or even a great game. I'm here to learn a few gamemaking tips. And a medium to release my game on the internet. If I don't like your tips, then I won't use them. Pretty simple stuff.

The point of reviews is to present pros and cons of the game. If he doesn't care, he shouldn't read reviews or at least refrain from commenting on them. I have no idea what it is that you want to say. A weak game got an appropriate review. What's strange about that? He didn't write it out of malice. He didn't even give it a star-rating PRECISELY not to anger Max. And yet he went berserk anyway. Other people added some of their own thoughts on the game that didn't warrant separate reviews, and then some other people got irritated at Max for his usual behavior and defended the reviewer.

edit - eh sorry double
Let me use a real life example. There's no bigger tool in sports than Lebron James. That kid feels so entitled to a championship and praise and all the comparisons to previous greats while choking away his limited finals opportunities. "Why people criticizing me? MJ took 7 years to win a championship!" As if he has the right to compare himself to MJ.

I fucking hate Lebron James. I say to myself, man if I ever met him, I'd piss on him multiple times "Not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6..."

THAT being said. If I ever met him and said this to his face "Haha Lebron, you douche, you deserve to lose you damn choke artist!" I'd be a bigger tool than Lebron James. And I don't mean fun heckling from the stands. I mean like, he's signing an autography and I just blurt that out.

Anyway, moral of the story. Yes yes Max is an idiot, egotistical, blah blah. Nothing new to me or anyone here, apparently. But don't pretend like y'all aren't tools for coming at him.

This attitude seems to be prevalent in RM circles, it isn't, and shouldn't be this way. Indie game communities actually pursue feedback like this and when someone complains about something that serves no positive purpose in the game (like the fake loading screen or the rod/axe/pick hot keys), they change it. Same with pixel art communities, they want others to point out weak parts of their work! Yet some RM users think they're all-knowing and don't allow others to point out the obvious flaws in their work and advise them to change it for the better, because THEY DON'T MAKE MISTAKES! EVER! I can get it when someone gets angry when people whine about the fact that the guy had the gall to include random battles in their game (seriously...), but flipping out because of someone criticizing the obviously flawed aspects of the game?

News flash! Michelangelo was an artist. Milton was an artist. Mozart was an artist. Max McGee is not an artist, he's a game developer making simple games that entertain. Heck, I myself am an pixel artist, but the "artist" part is misleading. I don't create art, I create pixel images. I'm not an artist, I'm a graphic designer. Are you saying that a person who fools around in VX, makes maps out of RTP images, and designs a very simple, almost plot-less game creates art? Not every creator is an artist! Art's become cheap these days it would seem...

The fact that you don't account for my gamemaking demographic (which is probably 95% of all gamemakers but less than 5% of active rmn forum people) is why I said your reality's warped.

Max, obviously, does not fit into this category. But think about this for a second.

This would apply to any person but Max, he's unconsciously stirring this shit up himself. You think throughout all these years, starting back at GW, there's been a conspiracy against Max and all the comments and reviews of his game were biased? How is that even possible? I reckon dozens of people have had a bone to pick with him, people unacquainted with each other, are you saying that all of them were vultures preying on poor Max without any reason whatsoever?

Man, I hate to get involved with this kind of crap, but I might as well go all out. DE, you're one fucking moron. And having to explain why you're a moron would be an insult to anyone rooted in reality. Boom. I'm done.

Thank you for that. You've convinced me to change my ways and become a better person, thanks!

Actually, I'm not done. "I do it my way even if it sucks" IS THE CORRECT WAY. And anyone who truly thinks otherwise has their head screwed on wrong. Really wrong.

I have always been willing to put up with the rough gameplay in exchange for a nice story. However over the years, Max's gameplay have become less and less story focused and the unforgiving gameplay had become more prevalent. I can't fault him for this but I always thought the story was his strong suit.

You know what, this is exactly what I told Max when he sent me a rage PM after my first comment to this review. You don't want to know what he responded with. All I can say it wasn't nice.

I'd love Max to go back and start making story-focused games again, like, you know, the ones he owes his popularity to (Iron Gaia, Backstage, etc.), but he's hellbent on producing these awful gameplay-focused games in his quest for downloads. Which is a shame, and yet he doesn't want to acknowledge that the quality of his games has been slipping due to this. His loss, I say, although it's shame I'll never experience another good story from Max at this rate.

I've always been a fan of Max's games, up to To Arms! I guess which marked his change of attitude towards game design, I consider him to be one of the best indie RPG designers, but I must admit based on his recent comments and the PM's he had sent me I came to the conclusion that as a person he's obnoxious, self-centered, quarrelsome, and bitter. Simply unbearable.

So, it's back to "I do it my way even if it sucks and everyone says a simple alternative would be better, just because?" Cool.

I'll be sure to remember this and point out whenever you make a review of someone's game or partake in a discussion on game design.

You're not an artist, you're a craftsman. A game developer.

If only you were to realize this...

All I can say you're a goddamn hypocrite, you know that? And your attitude is starting to grate on my nerves.

Your games aren't manna from heaven and you aren't the next Leonardo da Vinci of game design. Yet you continue to act like a prima donna, seizing every opportunity to complain how your games don't have the download count of Hero's Realm, that RMN hates you (are you a masochist?), how your games aren't popular, how people don't give your games a chance, and so on, and so on, boohoo, incessant whining. And then you release another flawed game and wonder why people say it's flawed and don't want to play it. A vicious circle.

Man, I hate to get involved with this kind of crap, but I might as well go all out. DE, you're one fucking moron. And having to explain why you're a moron would be an insult to anyone rooted in reality. Boom. I'm done.

Let me make something clear. I don't like Max either. His priorities are all screwed up, and I'm not the first person to laugh about his whining or hypocrisy or what have you and I won't be the last. But ganging up on him is downright pathetic. "Heheh my turn to take a swing hehehehe what a chump"

Why do I say this? I've seen his other reviews, and y'all gang up on him in those too. You're all like the fucking media clowns that keep badgering people like T.O. cause you know he's gonna say something stupid. It's really really sad. I won't bother telling y'all to grow up, cause a douchebag doesn't have a conscience.

I don't give a damn what kind of a tool he is. I don't care if he deserves it for his reaction. Every person here piling on is just as bad. Or worse. His overreaction is because he's hurt that his project wasn't liked. Y'all piling on is because... taking jabs at him sounds like fun. OR you think you're on some higher moral pedestal looking down upon the sinners. Which is laughable.

Everywhere I go, all I see is "but but, we're allowed to be assholes, that's our job as critics." If you happen to have a brain or a heart or anything resembling either (first off you're in the minoritiy), think about that mentality. Then... let the word "Hobby" enter your thought processes.

Now I'm done.

Y'know, I've seen bad games and egotistical jackassery before, but most of the time, you could write it off as youthful inexperience and arrogance. These people get older, their skills improve, and they're not so full of themselves anymore.

Max McGee doesn't have that an excuse. He's proven (again, apparently) that he's an egotistical, talentless little prick who refuses to learn anything, and I regret ever being a fan of the son of the bitch.

These reactions are great. (Although I'm enjoying them a little too much?)

Honest enough!
