Unsure of how I want to handle things... (Regarding Story and Characters)

I've been having this debate with myself ever since I started this remake. I toss a few ideas around in my heads regarding the matter, but am never truly satisfied with the choices I make. The story as it is now has a lot of dialogue and character interaction, but I'm not sure if I want it to stay like that. I was thinking about having it take a more simplistic route, with only enough dialogue in automatic events and what-not to move the plot along. Y'know, sort of like the original. So instead of having long and semi-drawn-out cut-scenes, they'd get right to the point and send you on your way in no time flat.

For those who have played the demo, what might you all think of this? Should I keep it the way it is, or simplify it to make it more Dragon Quest-ish?

All depends. If you think you're going to end up padding it with filler dialogue just to match the pacing of previous cutscenes, you might want to go the more simplistic route.
I find myself usually wanting to get to the action. To long of scenes can bother me. Or talking to often.
That's the thing, see. I like to get right into the action, too, and I find that perhaps keeping everything simple would suit this game more. I just may go back in and fix whatever I've made thus far, seeing as how it's not that much at all.

Partially depends on how engaging your action is. With RM2K DBS, I'm going with "probably not very engaging."

Partially depends on the length of the game. Longer games need more stuff to break them up. Dungeon after dungeon starts to feel really samey. Sometimes simple gameplay changes like an event-driven series of battles, or a temporary guest character, or a part with only the main character, etc. can be enough to keep things fresh without needing any cut scenes. But cut scenes can help a lot too.

Partially depends how good your writing is. Make me care about the characters, so I'll keep reading. Then make me care about the events, so I'll keep playing.

Partially depends how long you really mean by "extensive". In a given hour, how much time is gameplay and how much is cut scenes? If it's five or ten minutes of cut scenes per hour, no problem. If it's twenty or more, you probably have a problem.
Now that I've thought about it, I'm going to leave it as-is. If anything, it will be my only full-length game with a proper story and the like. That approach (my original) also works much better with what I'd initially planned for the game, and would require me fixing a lot more things if I changed the story that drastically.

Sooooo yeaaahhhh... I guess it's staying the way it is. Haha.
