Scourge Reviews: Hero's Quest 2

I'm just going to say it straight out: this game is arguably the worst thing I have ever played. I'm sorry I had to be so blunt, but it's true. The lack of effort put forth by the creator is extraordinary and I can honestly say this game has almost no redeemable qualities. If this is ever going to be a decent game, or even a barely passable game, it's going to need a lot of work.
Let's break it down:

Presentation: (Graphics, Music, Difficulty, and the Little Things)
As I mentioned before, this game shows an astounding lack of effort on the part of the creator. I mean, take a look at this title screen.

The title screen is the first thing a person sees when playing a game. It needs to be crisp, sharp, and inviting, not blurry to the point of illegibility.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
To say the graphics clash would be an understatement. The game uses a mixture of RTP and the graphics from Enterbrain's Japan pack, which do not mesh well. It's also worth mentioning that the Japan Pack graphics are included with the game and anybody can rip them from the graphics folder and use them without giving Enterbrain a cent. Last time I checked, that was illegal. PurpleBall might want to take care of that soon.
And then we have the music, or lack thereof. None of the maps I played had a single second of background music; the only things to be "blessed" with generic RTP tunes were the title screen and battles. Not having music in the majority of the game felt strange, and I literally jumped in my chair when a fight kicked in and the battle music came on.
Speaking of fights, they're a joke. If you look up unbalanced in the dictionary, it would have a picture of this game. Your "characters" are absurdly overpowered, items heal the entire party, including the two 2500 point potions you find in the first "dungeon," and battles give incredible amounts of exp. The first battle, which was also a boss fight, shot my characters up two levels each.
Why is dungeon in quotations marks?

That's why.
To say the mapping in this game is bland would be an understatement. Maps are huge, undetailed, and a few seem to be made while under the influence of controlled substances.
Oh, and one last point. The lag in the first "dungeon" is insane. My laptop is only a year old, and it threatened me with suicide when I entered that map. The amount of events on that single map is incredibly, and needlessly, high. If you must have a hundred individual fires on a single map, track down an anti-lag script. Anaryu has an excellent script available for download from this very website.
Presentation: 0/5
Story and Characters: (Or Lack Thereof)
Let me make this clear: THERE IS NO STORY.
The basic plot of the game is explained in a single dialog box at the beginning of the game: there's an evil war god named Hiver and your sister killed him, but he's still alive. Then some Captain fellow comes downstairs and tells you to follow him upstairs, where you meet Bland and Blander, who are apparently soldiers in your tiny squad. The best part? Every single one of these characters, including the protagonist, is introduced with a dialog box, a biography, so the creator never has to show you anything, only tell you about each character and leave it at that. Hero's Quest 2 falls victim to the most basic writing error of all-time within ten seconds of gameplay.
And the story? Oh, don't get me started on the story. Your little squad is on the way to kill some barbarians, who never show up, and a mage named Bennet, whose sole line when joining your party is "come on," has to tag along. You're too late to save the village, but end up fighting a Hooded Man From Nowhere, who may have been a Giant Space Flea in disguise, and teleport away to meet the king. Upon meeting the king, he asks you how things went, and Bennet zaps him with lightning. No, really. The king asks you how things went, Bennet says "It, is time," and all of a sudden lighting and betrayal and laughable spam-attack boss fight. The king's sole line after you save him from this assassin is "Amazing!" Then he orders you to escort his invisible son to a town and I quit the game because I was laughing too hard over "It, is time."
Story/Characters: 0/5
Systems:
There's really not much to say here.
KGC's parameter system makes an utterly useless appearance that adds nothing to the game, you are, strangely enough, only allowed three party members at a time, and there's a completely unnecessary caterpillar system. Save points are almost nonexistent, not that it matters considering how easy battles go. The sole redeemed quality here is that save points fully heal your party, which is nice, as items are rare and shops rarer still, and there's a surprisingly decent tutorial on saving for the first time.
Systems: .5/5
The Verdict:
King's Quest 2 is a boring, bland, WTF-inducing game with no characters, poorly executed story, and laughable difficulty.
This could one day be passable, but a lot of work needs to be sunk in here before anything remotely enjoyable emerges.
Final Score: (Not an Average)
.5/5

To Purpleball:
Play more RM games and work on your mapping. It needs help. A lot of it. Consider typing dialog in Word or a similar program before putting it in game and try to eliminate needless added systems. Finally, have people play-test your game. Not your family, not your friends, but people who won't be afraid to criticize. I'm sorry if I came across too harsh, and I hope you can some day improve this game and make it enjoyable.

Thanks :)
For taking the time out of you life to play this horible and game and taking even more time to review it thank you very much but you did get my hopes kinda up and I think my brothers disapointed in me but still thanks scourge thank you very much. :)

Ps. It's Hero's Quest not king's quest thanks anyway :)
Pss. Why if it is sooooooo horible why play man why? 481 people have played this give or take and none of them have been this rude just plain mean to me just why?

Sorry I didn't mean to be rude I am so sorry :)
I'm just going to say it straight out: this review is arguably the worst thing I have ever read.

Only kidding. You do make a few attempts to give some actual feedback here.

Honestly though, this is your only written review for the site and it gives the worst possible score, not to mention the repetitious idea of "lolz it sucks". Most people will probably look at your profile and figure you just like to bitch, or that you just love to advertise the fact that an inexperienced author made a really poorly designed game (Omfg, really?!?!). Anyone can look at the game's profile and realize that it's made by an inexperienced developer, there's just no need to pour salt in the wound. If you really want to encourage someone to improve their game, it's sometimes better to take the few suggestions you have for them and post it to the game's wall, or even shoot them a PM.

Anyways, I do look forward to reading some more positive reviews from you in the future.

Dude I like you. Thank you soooooo much :)
Can't say I personally agree with this review, mostly because I haven't played the game myself~ xD
But, judging from the screenies, there's plenty of work to be done on 'em..

I've offered to help out over on Pokemon Violet, so yeah I can't say I'll be able to make a diamond out of a turd. (Excuse that..lol :3) But, I can at least offer up the assistance I'm able to put out~ :)

You can help on both if you want
Ugh, I'm having painful flashbacks to my "The 7 Dragons" review from late 2010... Remember that? How it was overly insensitive and insulting, trying its damnedest to point out every single flaw while throwing 'lol u nub bro!' all about? Remember the shit-storm that ensued? I believe I gave it the same score (might have been 1 star, actually) and spent the following pages trying to explain (or excuse) my wafer-thin 'desire' to see the designer improve and that my review was solely made to express such.

History has a tendency to repeat itself, yes; but so soon?

If I could quote myself:

Corfaisus
You say that this review is supposed to give the designer good feedback and not to be taken as anything discouraging, but I didn't see a single line of good, useful suggestions in there aside from "practice, practice, practice." I knew a kid like this before that would tear your art to pieces for a few paragraphs and then say "sheesh, I was only trying to help."
To be honest, I did come across too strong on this.
I feel a little ashamed that my first review on this site was so harshly-worded, especially since it was directed at PurpleBall's first game. I apologize for coming across like an insensitive jerk, and I'd like to try and fix that.
If you want to improve, my original suggestion still stands: play more RM games and learn from them. I can honestly tell you that my first games were weak too, and it was only through playing more games and practicing that I improved at all.
If that doesn't work for you though, there are a boatload of handy VX tutorials for you to use here.
The same thing stands for writing solid dialog and believable characters: read, read, and read some more, and listen to people talk as well. A lot of your dialog came across as wooden and stilted. Real people have chemistry when they speak, but I felt like none of your characters had any. While this can be understandable with characters who don't know each other, your soldiers have been serving together a while. Have them make jokes, references to past events; show us that they are a unit, don't tell us.
The second most important thing to do is to let your project sit. Like almost any other creative endeavor, your game isn't going to be perfect when you first finish it. Let it rest for a while after you put the finishing touches on it and then come back and see where you left off. A fresh mindset is important when bug-fixing and clearing up errors. Obviously I should have let this review sit before submitting it, as it's pretty mean-spirited and rude. With that in mind, I'll be changing the score from this review to 0/5 stars, not to reflect any change in the quality of this game, but to reflect that I was a douchebag. Giving your game a 0/5 rating will, probably, just set your game profile back to how it used to be. I won't be taking this review down, as a lot of what I said still stands. Although I was a jerk about it and failed to give you any really useful suggestions on how to improve, your mapping is still bland, your characters are still bland, and everything could really use some polish. That link of tutorials above will help you immensely with all of that. I will put more helpful links here in the future, but I'm running late for work now.
I'm sorry I came across as being so rude and I honestly hope you can make this game a really impressive one. If you want help with VX, please feel free to contact me. I'm no expert, but I promise I'll provide actual, meaningful aid, and not the kind of jackass "help" I gave you in this review.
EDIT: I'm also sorry that I forgot the name of your game. That alone shows that I should have spent more time on this review.
