During a 3-day workshop in Australia, a girl named Kana discovers a dark secret hidden beneath the manor she is staying at. Now she must work against time to save her friends from a fate worse than death. There are two objectives: Solve the mystery behind the existence of the wraith, and live to see the morning sun. Dawn is only a few hours away..

Wraith is the first game I ever built using RPG Maker 2003. The total gameplay time is about 4 hours. There are multiple endings depending on how many people you manage to save, and whether you ultimately solve the mystery of the wraith.

Just wanted to give a heads-up, Mountain Eye (or B-GEE~ as she goes by on youtube), is almost done her LP of Wraith! There's only a couple videos left to go, so now would be a good time to give it a gander. If anything, be sure to check out part 10 and 14. You'll see why ;).

I've done my let's play for this game!
Charstray Plays: Wraith

Really Awesome game! The story and battle system is really new to me! Why I didn't find this earlier? :(
Yeah, every artist makes mistakes in their first project. It's a learning experience for everyone, I suppose.

By finding all the cutscene CG's.

Ah. I'm missing the one between "Lily slaps Kana" and "Martians". I assume it only appears if you let everyone die.

And I could have sworn I saw the menu code reference "the making of Wraith" at least once while I was pawing through it in the Maker trying to find that darn cutscene so I could place a save prompt after it. Ah well, maybe it was just my imagination or something that got axed midway through development.

Anyway, I'm going to try and contact MountainEyes about the TVT thing. Hopefully she's a better writer than me.

Edit: Tropes page is finished! See it here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/Wraith

Anyway, I managed to get the best ending, yay! Very interesting (and the backstory is quite sad). Again, though, it didn't feel particularly horrific -- I guess a big thing about horror stories is that you're never safe, and have to constantly watch out for danger. If there's an impenetrable sanctuary, that feeling kind of wears off. Especially if the main character has supernatural powers specifically tailored to resisting the danger. Sometime I'd really like to see a story where the undead are not inexplicably hurt/repelled by light, and people who try to use that trope do nothing but make a shining beacon for the undead to come kill them. I kept expecting you to do something in that vein...and I guess you kind of did with the power outage, but I was wondering if the wraith would be able to put out the fire or something, since characters mention that it's really cold whenever it shows up. But alas. I imagine the story is darker if you don't rescue everyone in time, but it takes so long for them to die that you have to do it on purpose, pretty much. Also...

I was a bit disappointed that there was no way to save Cyrus or the scientists, in a game where you can choose whether everyone else lives or dies.

Haha, you might be expecting a bit much from me. I did this about 4-6 years before AAG came out, so of course it's gonna pale in comparison (for a time, I had actually removed both it and Sainth cause I didn't really wanted people playing it anymore since it had so many flaws).

I know what you mean about it not really being a horror story. I guess it's more that it has horror elements to it, but was still light-hearted enough to keep the mood up? I dunno. Sainth in comparison goes in a completely different tangent (not sure if that's good or bad.). Well if you're gonna play it, let me know how it goes :).

I still haven't unlocked all the "meanwhile" scenes, or the "making of" file, though. How are they unlocked?

By finding all the cutscene CG's. You need to get them all to unlock all of them. I'm not sure if I made any 'Making of' files though. I don't think that became a habit for me until my second game (Alter Aila).
Does it have to be a certain length? You can use the one on this gamepage if that'll work.

I've seen descriptions that are literally only a few sentences, so I don't think there's a rule for length, no. They do prefer it if people write their own descriptions rather than just using the creator's, though, and the description on the gamepage isn't terrible descriptive...

Nice cliffhanger at the end, too. I'll just have to hope that Sainth both adequately explains it and doesn't drop any more mysteries.

It's cool that you're still willing to perform bugfixes on such an old game! A lot of developers seem to want to distance themselves from their old work, and refuse to touch any of it once they've moved on to greater pastures, in my experience. I'll download the bugfix and see if I can finish the game tomorrow.

For good reason! Honestly, I pretty much took a completely blind shot in terms of fixing that bug and somehow it worked. The code is so shoddy that trying to figure out what's causing it really is trying to find a needle in a haystack.

By the way, I was thinking of making a TV Tropes page for this. I've already thought of a number of tropes that would fit, but I cannot for the life of me think of a good description. If anyone's interested in a TVT article, I'd appreciate it if they could write a description for the game!

Haha really? That'd be neat to see. Does it have to be a certain length? You can use the one on this gamepage if that'll work.

Heys, thanks for the feedback. Yeah since it's my first game, there's a lot of really glaring issues and bad designing decisions that I'd know better than to do now (gotta start somewhere right?).

I have no idea why that game-breaking bug occurs, but I applied some kind of fix and it seems to work so hopefully that problem can be considered solved. I've uploaded a new version so try that (also fixed the lab door opening sound to be less grating). For some reason it only seems to occur in that room (at least as far as I can tell. Let me know if it happens anywhere else).

For your second point:

Nah, it only affects the CG that comes up if you get through the fight (there's 2 CG's that can show up depending on whether you did or didn't use the Soul Mirror). It's mainly in case you didn't have enough lightstones/ soul to get through that part, plus its obscurity seeing as it's hiding behind the Hand tool, which is more or less useless the entire game.

And on your last point, Kana'll still use a lightstone anyways (so nah, I didn't make any alternate cutscenes in case that happened :P)
*apologizes for necroposting*

Well, this is an interesting game. I didn't find it particularly horrific (at many points it felt more like black comedy), but the storyline was definitely well-done. I also like how the choices one makes and the branching they cause actually feel meaningful here, unlike in AA where it was kind of undercut by the whole "LOL your previous choices were meaningless, now play the true game" thing.

It would also have been nice if you had put a save prompt before the final boss, though, it really sucks to watch the ~10-minute cutscene marathon every time you fail. -_- (I tried adding my own, but it didn't work for some reason. Probably because I have no clue about the intricacies of RPG Maker.)

I'm currently trying to get the best ending, but I seem to have encountered a game-breaking bug; if you try to access the menu after

you leave the wraith cell

then the game crashes. It's just a black screen for a while, then says, "Event script referenced an event that does not exist." Do you know how to fix this? Or is accessing the menu unnecessary, so if I just avoid pressing X I'll be fine?

Edit: Oh yeah, a question:

Does using the Soul Mirror during the final battle have any ill effects? It makes it trivially easy, since it's basically an infinite-use lightstone, so I assume there's something up with it? The only guess I have is that it damages Kana's soul, but due to the aforementioned menu-crashing bug I can't check... Does something special happen if you don't use it?

Edit 2: Oh dear, I have another question. I may unleash a flood of them now that my mind is going. Apologies in advance in that is the case.

Anyway, I noticed that, during the cutscene when Kana uses a lightstone (avoiding details because of spoilers), the amount of lightstones in your inventory actually does decrease by one (a nice touch; it's unfortunate that such a simple thing is so often forgotten even by commerical games). I was wondering, though: what happens if you have no lightstones at that point?
Did you just ask me why they're short? o_O
i dont meen to be rude but y is this game and sainth say they r so short in theyre description?
Glad to see that you fixed it~
Going to try to get the good ending now if you'll excuse me :3.

I got ... frozen crabs, but they don't seem to be enough.

I'm sorry... I laughed at this one for what should be an obvious reason. XD
Nice looking game btw... :)
Oh okay, yeah that's pretty close to the end. If you're interested, one of my earlier posts shows you how to get the good ending, so you can check that out after you've beaten it.

That computer actually doesn't do anything. Sorry, it's just for show :P.

I'd be all for your doing a let's play of it :). I use to have a walkthru for the game, but I'm not sure where it is anymore...

EDIT: Oh wait, I found it: http://rpgmaker.net/users/Neok/locker/Wraith_FAQ.rtf

Thanks :). Wraith was my first game, so the coding and design can be a bit lacking at times. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.

If I recall correctly, all of that is part of getting the best ending. Where are you in the game? There's an earlier post that details how to get it if you want to check.

2nd Floor blocked area:

The blocked area on the second floor isn't significant until you're well into the good ending path. There's a secret passage on the third floor in the angel painting room that'll take you down there.

The lighthouse

This becomes relevant also on the good ending. You'll know when you need to go here.

I'm not sure which password protected computer you're talking about. Where is it located?

I'd be glad to listen to what you have to say about the game. If you want to post spoilers, you can use hide tags:

Wow, thanks for the help! At the time in the game I asked that, my save point is up to the part where you can bring Cyrus soap. But the game's good enough I don't mind doing another playthrough.

The Password Protected computer is on B1, I think, on the first room at the top left in the area with the scientists. It's in the topmost left corner of that room. When you click on it, it temporarily becomes something similar to the elevator button on floor B1 with a message box that says, "Password protected" or something along those lines (I can't remember the exact wording).

EDIT: Oh, and if you don't want to do a walkthrough, I'm willing to do a Let's Play. Only if you are ok with it, of course.

Uh, sorry to be a spam messenger but...Is there a way to open the blocked door on the second floor of the mansion and after you get into the lighthouse...what significance does that have on the game's outcome? And what does that Password Protected computer do--is there a password for it? Many thanks.

Beat the mutants! Haha!

>Neok, just want you to know...
Your game nearly made me CRY from the sheer awesomeness! I haven't played a game with such a storyline in ages! I can't say much on it since I don't want to give out spoilers, but you are just...you totally rock, man. Not many games have a female lead, either, which --as a girl gamer-- was another thing that I appreciated about this. Seriously, great everything about this. I've already recommended it to one person, and there shall be more.

You rock. Hands down.

One of my bugfixes ended up making it impossible to save them in time. I've uploaded a new version which fixes that issue.

Thanks for reminding me. I was suppose to have fixed that long ago.. -_-;

While you're at it, think you could make the mutant/spare parts side a little easier? ^^; I must have tried 30 times by now to get through there, but even with the Friendly Mutant in your party, it's insanely difficult to get through that corridor (and, even if you make to the room and nab the spare parts, you're toast on the way back).

But for the record, the fact I've tried 30+ times to beat that one spot shows you've made an addicting game! Congrats for that! ^-^

I can't seem to make it back in time to keep the servants and Kana's classmates (save Lily) from dying. I don't understand what the problem could be, as I have gone straight to and from the rooms before, or I have just stopped to get the matches or see the fireplace (or both). But by the time I get back upstairs, it's too late.

Mind shedding a little light on what I'm doing wrong?
