A Reason for Arts

♫Get in the Zone♫

So there are many, many days where I have no motivation to work on my game.
Therefore, I open photoshop to get something productive done in my free time.
And why not kill two birds with one stone, and use photoshop to get a few pictures done for the game. Perfect plan!

A Reason for Arts will be a (possible) series of mediatized pictures, with my comments on their creation.
Hopefully, this will allow me to share my ideas to you, without choking my image box with cute catgirl pictures.

Let's start this with a flavor image. This is Ninshara. You've seen her a few times in older pieces:

♫Full Size ♫
This picture is called "Replay New Emotions".
I can't talk about this character too much, without spoiling the world. So let's just say she's a "goddess" like Zirodolla.
This was very much a study on how to use light effects that were given to me by BurningTyger.
The reason I called it "Replay New Emotions" was because the character uses music to develop personality. Without music - she is nothing.

...also, this song is amazing, and you should listen to it.

DO IT. DO IT NOW 8-|

Anyway, here is the next group of pictures:

Tawhiri love <3
Now the first picture was practice. The sword he's using, however, is pretty important to the story arc of his character.
And the second picture was drawn to replace Tawhiri's last picture. It wasn't very good.
Now the last picture was in a unfinished state, before I edited it and put it in the game. Here's how it looks in game:

(Yes, that's my testing center. Shut up.)
I'm not blind- the picture could use some work.
But if the Ziro drawings taught me one thing, it's that I can draw like a boss, only under a blue moon. So yeah...let's move onto a new character.

This was an experiment when it came to how I detail the inner textures. Pretty much ripped from Gankutsuou, only with a different lineart style.
The character is named Eron. He's a hunter who will join your party in the Moonlit Chapter that starts right after the current demo. He was very fun to draw, and allowed me to think about his personality a bit. Always nice!

Now for the last one:

This is "The Sage". He will be a boss battle in the Holy Plains: An area that you go to after the Moonlit Chapter.
Obviously, I followed the same clothes style from the Eron illustration. I also tried my hand at grass; something I haven't done in years. This was a lot of fun to color, and not having to draw the eyes was a breath of fresh air.

And that's pretty much it. These pictures gave me a lot of time to really set down and think about this game.

One thing you guys might notice is the continuation of near-grayish line art. I really like this color, and taking Galv's comment into respect:

Second with the line work...
The lady on the left (in the bottom picture) has black lines and I think looks the best comparing the three.
Your art and game are too colourful to use grey lineart. It washes out the image and drain's the colour.

Perhaps instead of the grey, use a colour of the same lightness? Like for the beast, a dark purple perhaps?

I want to find a middle ground.
I am also looking into a more "painted" style. The great thing about making battlers is that they don't need to follow the general art style.
This gives me a lot of breathing room to play around with new ideas, and add them into something bigger.

With all that out of the way, thanks for viewing! Any C&C is greatly appreciated.

I'm gonna lose my 1666 makerscore with this post.
How unfortunate.
(Thanks for the pic of the moment!)
Damn, your art's better than ever lol~ Although, why's the Tawhiri in the first pic seem so short? Unless he's actually supposed to be that way, oh well. :)
I agree your artwork continues to improve. I know the feeling of having no motivation to work on your game, this is definitely a productive alternative :D

That image of Ninshara definitely deserves the pic of the moment. Well done, keep them coming!
I really like the new drawings.
I'm highly impressed with that seated Ninshara illustration.

i suggest picking up spriting or doing hand drawn backgrounds to compliment your art style.

before you say "lol idk h2 sprite". i didn't either. takes photoshop, careful observation of certain pixel styles and simply practice.

once you get the ropes, it opens a whole new world for you to explore, along with your art.

Most definitely. I don't know if I will pull that off in this project, but I hope to have enough skill to follow this up in the next A.R.F.M.
