My newest game! An all original story, with twists.

This contains the first 3 chapters of the Game.

Genre:

Action, dark fantasy, Drama

Setting

-This game takes place in Feudal and in the Sengoku period of Japan. The "feudal" period of Japanese history, dominated by the powerful regional families (daimyō) and the military rule of warlords (shōgun), stretched from 1185 to 1868.

The Edo period, a Period of war, politics and conflict between European and Asian Religion.

-The Sengoku period or 'Warring States period' in Japanese history was a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict that lasted roughly from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century. The Sengoku period in Japan would eventually lead to the unification of political power under the Tokugawa shogunate. Christians and firearms first arrived during this period to Japan.

History

During the Edo period, also called the Tokugawa period, the administration of the country was shared by over two hundred daimyō in a federation governed by the Tokugawa shogunate. The Tokugawa clan, leader of the victorious eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara, was the most powerful of them and for fifteen generations monopolized the title of Sei-i Taishōgun (often shortened to shōgun). With their headquarters at Edo (present-day Tōkyō), the Tokugawa commanded the allegiance of the other daimyō, who in turn ruled their domains with a rather high degree of autonomy.

The Tokugawa shogunate carried out a number of significant policies. They placed the samurai class above the commoners: the agriculturists, artisans, and merchants. They enacted sumptuary laws limiting hair style, dress, and accessories. They organized commoners into groups of five and held all responsible for the acts of each individual. To prevent daimyō from rebelling, the shōguns required them to maintain lavish residences in Edo and live at these residences on a rotating schedule; carry out expensive processions to and from their domains; contribute to the upkeep of shrines, temples, and roads; and seek permission before repairing their castles.

Genesis:

The "Christian problem" was, in effect, a problem of controlling both the Christian daimyo in Kyūshū and their trade with the Europeans. By 1612, the shogun's retainers and residents of Tokugawa lands had been ordered to forswear Christianity. More restrictions came in 1616 (the restriction of foreign trade to Nagasaki and Hirado, an island northwest of Kyūshū), 1622 (the execution of 120 missionaries and converts), 1624 (the expulsion of the Spanish), and 1629 (the execution of thousands of Christians). Finally, the Closed Country Edict of 1635 prohibited any Japanese from traveling outside Japan or, if someone left, from ever returning.

The christian problem reached its highlight under Ieyasu's successors Tokugawa Hidetada and Tokugawa Iemitsu, particularly after the predominantly Christian population of Kyūshū had risen in the Shimabara Rebellion against the shogunate in 1637. The uprising was crushed brutally; more than 40,000 Christians were killed. Authorities of persecution were set up, with the goal of a nationwide persecution and extermination of the Christians. Anyone who was suspected of being a Christian had to abandon Christianity publicly and dishonor Christian symbols, which were called 'fumie', , as well as register in the Buddhist register of faith of Buddhist temples and visit those regularly. Those who refused to abandon their Christian faith were executed, often through public crucifixion or incineration. :)

Shimabara Rebellion:

It is an uprising in southwestern Japan in 1637–1638 during the Edo period. It largely involved peasants, most of them Catholic Christians. The shogun vs Samurai Christians and peasants converted to christianity.

Jubei Kibagami, huh?
There doesn't seem to be anything besides the protagonist's name connecting this to Ninja Scroll. Was the same name chosen for any reason in particular?
:) I believe it's a nice name. Just that.
I will make some chapters in vx and continue on ACE
Feedback, incoming:

-Title screen (the one with the new game option on it) seems to be off-center, with the demon mask being stuck to the left and some black space open on the right.

-Text is nearly invisible in the narration textbox.

-Harvested voice-acting samples are actually pretty nice. At first. And by at first, I mean the very first one is okay. I had my volume up a little high, and the second one yelling "I AM COMING TO KILL YOU!" was not a welcome addition to my gaming experience.

-Dialog is very narmy, and I can't tell whether this is deliberate or not. Sasaki's talking with this woman, and then he yells something about cutting the genitals off some nearby soldiers because they're being loud, and then a soldier shows up and hands him two rice balls?

...and then awkward off-screen VOICED sex happens.

Thanks, game.

-Music and ambient sound effects are actually pretty nice. The rain is good. The background stuff is nice and soothing.

-...and then they started throwing jutsu. For a moment, all that historical information on the game's profile page had me hoodwinked.

-Aaaaaand droppin' the C-bomb. Don't do that unless you can get some actual punch out of it. It'll cheapen a script in a hurry unless you're really careful with it.

-Diagonal movement is really nice. Walkspeed is not bad for the map sizes. Run option is always welcome.

-The Shuha-ken ninpo has a typo in it. Should be excellent vs. dragons, with two L's in excellent.

-Jump spots are really unclear. As in, not marked at all.

-I was able to get to the ledge over the door after the first jumping section, but I think I had been holding a diagonal move while jumping, and I got stuck on the ledge. Might want to do something about this. Can't progress any further.
Hello, Thanks for your time playing my game. :)

English is my second languague so I will appreciate if you clear some things for me.

-Text is nearly invisible in the narration textbox. "I know about this, Will try to fix"

-Harvested voice-acting samples are actually pretty nice. At first. And by at first, I mean the very first one is okay. I had my volume up a little high, and the second one yelling "I AM COMING TO KILL YOU!" was not a welcome addition to my gaming experience. "So basically you mean the problem here is that the volume was high for the voices of some characters?"

-Dialog is very narmy, and I can't tell whether this is deliberate or not. Sasaki's talking with this woman, and then he yells something about cutting the genitals off some nearby soldiers because they're being loud, and then a soldier shows up and hands him two rice balls? "I dont find the definition of narmy. I don't see a soldier showing up, the rice balls come from his wife."

-...and then they started throwing jutsu. For a moment, all that historical information on the game's profile page had me hoodwinked."you dont like jutsu? if there is no jutsu what can a Game have? I mean the combat for rpg makers is very limited"

-Aaaaaand droppin' the C-bomb. Don't do that unless you can get some actual punch out of it. It'll cheapen a script in a hurry unless you're really careful with it. "You mean when the bad guy calls the Sasaki's wife 'Cun$'?"

-The Shuha-ken ninpo has a typo in it. Should be excellent vs. dragons, with two L's in excellent. "i will fix this"

-Jump spots are really unclear. As in, not marked at all. "Jumping is done automaticallly"

-I was able to get to the ledge over the door after the first jumping section, but I think I had been holding a diagonal move while jumping, and I got stuck on the ledge. Might want to do something about this. Can't progress any further."can you post a screenshot? dont diagonal move while on the mountain."
-The sudden volume spike on the second line of spoken dialog was a problem, especially since it was way too hot-blooded for the scene, but I think moderation might be the key with the voice samples. If you use fewer of them, then the ones that you do use seem more significant to the player.

-Narm is tvtropes slang, so sorry for using that. It was the quickest way I could think of to say what I meant. A narmy moment is a moment that was supposed to seem serious, but strikes the player as funny instead. I know there is a soldier that enters the scene before the rice balls are given, and I must have missed the bit of dialog where the wife hands him the rice balls, so when I played it, it seemed like Sasaki yelled at the soldiers to quiet down, and then they gave him some rice.

-Jutsu is okay, but it puts me in mind of things like naruto, ninja scroll, and basilisk rather than feudal Japan. I actually really like the historical stuff, and I think mixing that historical stuff with modern anime tropes could be really cool. I just wasn't expecting to see any jutsu in this game after the profile page spent so much time on the politics and social dynamics of tokugawa-era Japan.

-Yeah, I was referring to the bad guy's brief bit of dialog. I'm definitely not saying don't swear, since there's absolutely going to be times in a script where characters swearing makes sense. My problem was that, when he said it, I didn't care. It didn't add anything to the scene. If you're going to swear, swear strategically. Make it count. Otherwise the player will skim right over it at best, and be offended at worst.

-I get that jumping is done automatically. It's actually kinda nice. I like how seamless it is. However, not knowing which spots on the map lead to jumps could be a problem. Even having a different tile, or some kind of visual marker would make a difference. It prevents players from having to hunt all over the map for them, or from not knowing that they're there in the first place. When I first got to the jumping section, I thought I'd taken a wrong turn or that the map was bugged.

-I didn't save, but I can go back and try to replicate the problem with getting stuck over the door. I'll get back to you on this.
Ok, thanks a lof for your time, I will make the necesary changes to make a great game with your input.

Worry not, beacause the game will have a lot of historical drama. :)
-I figured out the thing with the soldier and the rice balls. The soldier is set to move around on his own during the intro, so sometimes he wanders up towards Sasaki. This happened to coincide with the giving of the rice balls.

-Game End option does not work from in-game menu.

-The jumping problem does not appear to be the result of a button-press during a jump. I think it either has to do with a bad jump spot or a passability issue. I got stuck over the doorway again. Three times. I have never not gotten stuck over that doorway. Give this thing a test play. I guarantee you will find the issue.

Personally speaking, I found the walk speed incredibly and painfully slow. The run speed didn't seem all that much faster. Speaking of slow, the textboxes were pretty slow too. After the text finished displaying, there was maybe a three-second pause, if not longer, before I could press Enter/Space/whatever to advance the text. I'm beginning to think these speed bumps are there to pad the game time to being a certain number of hours, but I could be wrong on this point.

The farthest I've gotten into the game is just above a doorway. If my suspicions are correct, it's probably the self-same place that kumada is getting stuck on.

*Edit: This jumping mechanic somehow reminds me of this game. Only those "jump" points are a tad more obvious. I'm not saying you're trying to steal the idea because there's nothing to steal, but there are certain similarities.
Hello Marrend, thanks for the feedback. I never seen that game you posted a link.

I did not copy any game mechanic. I got this jumping Idea from ninja stealth. What does ninjas do? go through doors? or go through roofs?

About the text of speed, it is meant that you carefully read everything and not skip the text.

I will check the getting stuck part, because I did play it and found nothing. please upload a screen shot or video and show this please, I will test play later. and upload a new version if I find something.

Crap! I already deleted the game from my hard drive! It would take about an hour for me to re-download it. Then I play it for maybe fifteen minutes before I get to where I always get stuck. Then I go through the motions of screen capping.

Whatever. I'll go through the motions because I'm a nice guy.
Looks good and I'm interested in Japanese history so I gave it a try. I like the presentation, music and character portraits. It looks nice (even though I still don't like the chibi sprites in VX...). The voices are a good touch too. I'm interested to know where you got them from (not to steal...) A couple of points:

I also got stuck above the door. This bit.

Should I even be there? If not, you need to make it clearer where to go.

Also, I completely agree with Kumada about the swearing. Mainly because it sounds anachronistic. Especially when the wife of a samurai says "damn". I don't know if you put it in to make the game more adult, or if as English is not your first language you don't realise how jarring it sounds, but I would cut it or at least reduce it. I don't mind swearing in games when appropriate but here it just feels...wrong.

And just to be picky... I doubt Japanese would pray to Susano or Amaterasu in this way, certainly not in the period the game is set in. I would suggest either Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, or a generic "buddha". Of course, if you're setting those gods up to be a major plot point than feel free to ignore me ;-)

Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses. You might want to consider getting someone to check the dialogue too, as I noticed a couple of errors slipped in. Hope this helped you!
+1 to everything papasan said. That's also exactly the place I got stuck, too.

As for the text speed, a lot of rpg gamers are fast readers. We can absorb a lot of words and their importance at a good rate. Speeding up the text is not glossing over our writing. It's keeping the audience from getting bored.

I didn't feel like the text speed was too slow, but I think that picking it up a little would definitely not hurt it.

That's the place I got stuck at as well! If there's three people that got stuck in the same place, there's a very high probability that there's an unintentional bug, or a missed jump point, or something else that was missed.

I also agree on papasan's point with the expletives. I'm not saying that you should take them all out, but they seem to be thrown around without too much care. It totally takes away from their impact.

*Edit: On a completely unrelated side note, Kojiro. Not that I'm 100% sure what I'm trying to say with this particular comment, but there you go.
Hello, Right now I am currently working, I will try to fix the things you guys mentioned. Let me know what grammar or spelling you guys have found out.

"Especially when the wife of a samurai says "damn".

I dont see the samurais wife saying "damn", that is why text is in lower speed, because if its normal or fast you guys skip or wont pay attention to details, it is the bad guy that says damn.

I fixed the bug in the screenshot above, it was weird because the event did not want to work, lol, and made a waterfall at the end of that map, I will upload later today.

thx for your time.
