Do the wooden boxes serve as treasure chests? If so, I think that folks who like to explore every inch of each dungeon will be in for a treat judging by what this one screenshot tells me!

Yeah, the small boxes contain anything optional that you can pick up, while larger chests are essential items.

You'll find the small boxes pretty much everywhere.

Finding items is neccesary for survival. Wandering down every path and exploring every where is a must.
