Game Title: Shattered Hourglass
Engine: RPG Maker VX Ace
Status at review: In Progress/Demo

Background:
The amount of knowledge I had about this game before I downloaded it was minimal, at best. I took a peek (in a rather literal sense) at the game page, but I was curious to see how much of the game explained itself.
I got as far as Icdalen Castle, therefore, not completing the game. I sincerely doubt taking a peek at the Page of Honor would have done me any good.


Graphics:
The pop-up text on entering hub areas was pretty cool. It would be neat if the other areas also had it, but I guess it's okay as-is. The face-sets from the VX Ace generator are not my cup of tea, but they are bearable. Mapping isn't anything to salivate over, but is generally competent.


Audio:
I gave the music directory a listen before playing the game. There was a mixture of tracks I could recognize (Lots of BoF3/4 tracks, here.) and ones I did not recognize, but were still good by themselves ("Icdalen"). For full disclosure, "Icdalen" is my new favorite song from, or in, an RMN game. Don't worry, the tracks from Ghost Shards are still up there!


Story:
Duran is a Time Mage that lives alone in a tower, performing and studying his art. One day, a knight barges into his place, claiming that he must die. The reasoning given was that Time Mages (Magi?) inevitably mess with history/fate/destiny/whatever-you-wish-to-call-it as part of the study of time. Duran claims to not want to do anything like that, but the knight doesn't particularly care, and the two get into a fight. After Duran suffers a mortal blow, he casts Vanish which was preceded by X-Zone, and gets sent who-knows-where with symptoms of amnesia. All he seems to recall is his name and a few of his skills the skills he had in the fight against the samurai.
Personality-wise, Duran comes across to me as all business, though the optional tasks suggest that he is not singular in his purpose. Treephop is something of a comedy relief character. I never took him too seriously, even if Duran did. Juliet is somewhat carefree, but is generally a serious person.
Duran and Juliet have a goal. With Duran, it is to get back his memories, and to return to wherever, or whenever as the case may be, he came from. Juliet joins after being impressed by how the party defeats a werewolf, and believes she can improve herself if she tags along. Treephop? He doesn't appear to have a clear goal, though he admits that he hates his job as a woodcutter, and certainly prefers the adventuring life.
There are several places where the theme of alternate realities timelines come into play. For example, players may find a person frozen by a grave. Duran can go back in time, and is given an opportunity to make a change. Aside from possibly doing exactly what the samurai fears (altering fate), enacting change will allow Duran to "remember" the "old" past, while the other party members are confused when he makes any mention of it. It's kinda neat.


Playing the game:
I started making notes for this game after a certain boss fight, so they are not as complete as they could be. Still, beware of spoilers.

I was more or less fine with the game up to the battle with Zulwhern. Getting Hiban into the party was nice, but, the stun/poison/confusion this guy was sending my way certainly created a hurdle. I decided to get Treephop to level 5, and have at least 15 Potions/Antidotes for the fight. It was close, but I managed to beat it.
Next boss was a succubus that delighted in using Fire Breath and/or Thunder Breath. Oh, she does multiple target stun, confusion, and sleep too. That's a lot of stuff that needs answers. I bought five revive items, so I thought I was okay. I wasn't. Not when the item revives with 1 HP. Not particularly helpful in a fight when all the enemy does is board-wipe, and performs the first action of the round. I did manage to beat her with the one character remaining, but it wasn't pretty.
Apparently, Icywland is now frozen over. The person who gave me the task of finding the ring the succubus had can't be reached. There's a ghost that says that he'll restore the town if I give him the ring, but, to make a long story short, it was the ring that made the succubus what she was. I'm not even sure I would return it to the quest-giver, much less this ghost. However, it's the only viable option, and it ultimately causes a boss fight against a werewolf to occur. So, that's like, two boss fights in a row. Beautiful.
So, that samurai from the opening? Apparently, Duran is able to "see" through his eyes, and is a playable character for a short while. Considering the music of the sequence, I get the impression that this idea was borrowed from BoF4, and the Fou-Lu sequences that occur there. Which leads me to think I might be controlling this guy again.
Speaking of the samurai, every battle in this sequence features multiple attacks per round. I get the general principle behind it: relaying how abusively powerful something is. Yet, I wonder about the game-balance issues this creates. I mean, I assume I have to fight these guys as Duran and company later, and things aren't looking up.
I'm on my third boss fight in a row. Fourth, if one counts the optional fight with the Spider Queen. It's not literally in a row, but I keep expecting a proper dungeon (No, I'm not counting encounters on the overworld map.) to happen before I fight a boss, and it's not happening.
The bad news is that I toned the difficulty down to "Soft" for Zulwern Round 2 (Yes, there's a Round 2. There's probably a Round 3 as well.). It feels like cheating to do this (I'm not sure why), but the game has been testing my patience with these boss fights. The good news is that the open sea is available shortly after this, and I can explore a huge swath of territory. The bad news is the Shagin (Sahagin?) enemies that can be found there. They hit for significant damage. It takes two hits for Duran to go down, and three hits for my other two party members. I don't have mass healing, but Greater Rewind is a decent answer. Unless I get unlucky, and they target Duran. At that point, it really depends on the situation I find myself in. I have to remind myself that this is on "Normal" difficulty. Maybe I should have kept it on "Soft"?
The next plot event involves yet another boss fight? I know I can bump the difficulty down again, but, no. I'm done. I am sooooo done with this game.



General Observations:
The game has scattered grammar issues. Meaning that they pop up every now and again. It's not terribly deterring for me, though the description of the Exploit Powder is probably the worst offender I saw.
I'm pretty sure Slow is supposed to target enemies rather than allies.
I didn't use any of Treephop's abilities except for "Deep Breath". His other abilities had an HP cost, and I was having trouble enough with keeping my party alive.
Most of the gripes I listed could probably be erased by grinding longer, or by altering the difficulty mid-game and keeping it there, or a mixture of both.


Summary:
I can't really fault the designer for stupidly insistent players. Saying that, I can't really say that this game stands out as "good" to me. On the other hand, I can't really say that it stands out as "bad" either.

Well, using haste or even slow (You'll get a slow enemy skill later on) to yourself can improve the potion usage, you can outrun the bosses. You clearly frustrated by the frequency of boss battles, I can understand, not everyone has the patience for that. Chapter I's boss battles never take more than 10 minute, except the Zulwhern (Round 2). Boss fights supposed to be challenging, with minimal grinding you can pass every boss or even not grinding at all.

To be honest grammar is my worst enemy, my native language and English nothing like each other, I'm eating a lot "words", eheh. I'm trying my best to get rid of them.

I don't know about minimal grinding, but, yeah, the bosses could be spread out more.
