I don't really object to what he's doing. He also created some trading cards I believe at some point. Not everything needs a specific purpose really especially since he's enjoying himself and giving out free stuff.

If you think about it, he's getting something manufactured and distributed, that's something he can apply elsewhere.


Yeah, I was thinking more in terms of promoting one's game, but I suppose if he's enjoying it, that's enough reason to do it. The pictures themselves are pretty killer.

EDIT: Not sure if you noticed, DHD, but the picture of the stickers on SU's site seems to be missing the eyes. o.o

Yup that's the old version. I never updated it, d'oh!

why do this? I don't really see this helping promote your game. Nice art, though.
And as to why I'm doing this... well SU has been a part of my life for eight years now, and it wouldn't be where it is without all the feedback from the community.

I said I'd give something back when I reached 1000 fans, someone said "SCRATCH AND SNIFF!", and then I got really nostalgic and thought it was a cool idea.

In short, I'm giving back. This really isn't for promotion because the game is kind of broken and messy right now actually. :)

EDIT:
Also I am reminded of the scratch n sniff stickers that came bundled with Earthbound. It probably didn't drive sales (in fact, if I recall the game didn't do very well in the states), but it was unique and memorable enough to have intrinsic value even decades later. Who knows? To me, not everything is about getting more visitors or finding ways to get more people to click the "download" button on my site. *shrug*

Maybe you could also sell some limited edition clay figurines. Rock on DHM, Starless Umbra's come far since its early days..

Apparently, Earthbound sold 150,000 copies in North America, which actually makes it a game with a cult following (and not a flop), much like Dragon Warrior II. Even in modern day, Dragon Quest V for the DS didn't even hit 150k. 90k seems to be the high water mark for JRPGs that aren't named Final Fantasy or a new (not remake) Dragon Quest.

Note: Is Kelarly on YouTube a fan of Starless Umbra, I wonder?
