Goodbye, World Map!

So, Paul and I decided on doing away with the World Map of Gaia in the traditional sense of walking around the overworld, getting into random battles, etc. The main reason behind it came from a technical standpoint, as we couldn't do some of the things we wanted to do with a big, 500x500 World Map. The VXA software simply couldn't handle it.

So, we've adopted a similar system to FFX, where players can teleport between locations they've already visited, from any save point (once teleport travel is unlocked, that is). We're going to create some small areas in between existing areas to give players more areas to move through and explore (and all the random encounter parties players have seen on the World Map will be relocated to these new areas).

It's a big change, I know. It also pretty much eliminates the need for Chocobo travel, but I'm working on something to keep our favorite yellow birds relevant (besides racing them).

Goodbye indeed! Its funny how we came to this decision a week ago... and the day the new world map travel system is unveiled is the day the "World map or not?" topic is posted in the forums.

I still wish we could have kept it, but alas... this works too.
That's quite a choice since your trying to keep an old school feel to the games.

That was never the mission statement of this project. It was simply to re-create systems from the console Final Fantasy games and make them work together. The aesthetics of the game are a consequence of the program's limitations and asset availability, at the end of the day.

I'm a little bummed too that we couldn't keep the world map, but it was the smarter choice given all of the factors before us.

There are plenty of old school Final Fantasy experiences available to us as gamers, but a blending of old and new systems is something that hasn't really been explored too much. It makes me excited for what the future will hold for FFD.

Sounds more like White Knight Chronicles travel system which I absolutely adore! Will the party's placement be determined from a locaion they teleported like the layout would be for example:

1
|
2–3
|
4

Teleporting from location 1 to 2 would place the party somewhere at the top of the location 2's map(s), and teleporting from 4 to 2 would place the party somewhere at the bottom of location 2's map(s)?

(Do you need some music search to be done, kupo? ;) )

Ideally, it should be like that, but there are some hurdles that we'd have to work out. Will's in charge of all of the technical work, and I'm sure whatever way Will whips up will work wondrously well (deliberate tongue twister).

Funny you mention music because we happen to be looking for a 'where are we going next?' type of music track. Sorry I can't be more specific, hah.

I do have this "Unofficial Remix Finder" 'job class', right? ;) Hence why I ask, but also because I wanna help too.

For a "Where are we going next?" type of music track maybe this?

or this:
I would have titled it "Goodbye Cruel World (map)!"

Missed opportunity. ;_;

@Noel_Kreiss

Thanks for the tracks! We appreciate it! As you can see from our unveiling of the Gaia map, there's going to be a lot of locations... hence, we're going to need lots of music in the future, haha.

William found a particularly good track for the 'Where are we going next?' theme.
You're welcome! It makes me happy whenever I'm able to help.
Do you have some more info regarding the demo, like which quarter of 2014 (if you plan to release a demo this year) you'd like to release it?

And you have quite a few locations from the Ivalice Alliance, subseries which I haven't really played, and that's counting Final Fantasy XII if it's official IA entry.
Will the Thunder Plains feature the lightning dodge minigame? ;P
And there appears quite a few locations suggesting that there is some kind of rail transportation, but the demos didn't really show anything suggesting something like that. Still, would be nice to have something like that; like i Final Fantasy IX aircabs were used to travel between various districts of Lindblum.

You're asking a lot of question we're not ready to answer yet. We're not going to talk about anything new until we're ready to talk about it.
Sorry, have fun developing anyway! ;)
I'm curious - what were the technical limitations that caused you to shy away from the fully navigable world map?

I'm going to be intentionally vague.

It was a myriad of issues here and there concerning the visual limitations of the world map tileset, the presence of lag, parallaxing concerns and the inability to adequately fit everything we wanted to in one 500x500 tile map. We spent a little time discussing possible concessions and solutions concerning the above.

In the end, we came up with an idea that seemed fair and we ran with it.

Cool with the intentional vagueness - I expected it was something to do with either the visual limits on the tilesets or the lag, so that pretty much summed it up. I'm at an early point in my own decision process whether to go with a world map or another system and looking at the reasoning others have for choosing one or the other.
