So, Lyra Needs A Command Ability
WCouillard- 05/23/2012 09:58 PM
First off, welcome. Didn't do any "welcome" blog before this, so now that's out of the way.
Lyra, the Red Mage, needs a command ability. Now, in the history of Final Fantasy games, Red Mages have always used White and Black magic. What I decided to do was create a new set of magic spells, containing a mix of classic Final Fantasy White, Black, and Time Magic spells, and just call it "Red Magic." Simple enough.
Here's the one thing I'm stuck on with the character. She needs a unique Command Ability. Every character has one (see Abilities page). I'm unsure of what to give Lyra. Most of the characters are a mix of two classic Final Fantasy job classes.
Red Mages have used X-Fight as a command in the past, but I won't use that for her since a) you can obtain X-Fight through Relics and b) it's one of her Limit Breaks already (along with Quickening which acts exactly like the Quick spell from Final Fantasy VI).
So, any suggestions? Please don't create some flashy new command for her. I'd like to use pre-existing established Final Fantasy series skills and commands. That is the entire basis of the project, after all.

As Lyra can use staffs (according to "Characters" page), maybe make something like elemental strikes from Final Fantasy XIII? It's like dealing elemental damage, but its formula is calculated from user's physical strength. Or maybe let her use En—spells (they give elemental property to the weapon of a target).
Well, those would then be classified as Red Magic, then. The way it works is, each character has a Command Ability and then a Skill Subset consisting of multiple skills (i.e. White Magic, Black Magic, Tools, etc.). The Command Abilities are things like Jump, Steal, etc. that don't require a sub-menu.
There are exceptions, though. One of the characters has no subset and has two Command Abilities (Slot/Gil Toss) and another has two subsets and no Command Abilities.
I was flirting with the idea of giving her Sing, but most of the known effects of Sing can be achieved through her Red Magic in the first place, so it seemed to be kind of a waste.

How about Geomancer's Gaia? Magic Sword? The "Peep" command? Mimic? Kick? Mantra? Build Up?
I think it should be something related to her sword. That would be nice C:!

Gaia may or may not be the Command Ability of one of the secret characters.
Dajh has Observe (Peep).
Mantra was a Blitz, and remains so.
Beclem has Chakra, which acts the same as Build Up (Attack Power buff).
Kick would only fit a Monk, unfortunately. :/
Magic Sword COULD be a viable option, but I think there's so many other elemental attack options with the other characters (plus some weapons that automatically add an element to an attack). It just seems like it'd be a bit of a waste.
I was hoping to incorporate Mix. That was the only other command besides Sing I really wanted to include, but I haven't found a script for it. Another thought I had was to use a common event for a "Conjure" command (acting the same as Tellah's "Recall" command, that would cast a random white or black magic spell. It'd fit with the classic Red Mage scheme of being able to cast white and black magic.
The only problem is the "Force Action" event command doesn't seem to work, ever. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong, but I've never seen it work when I've used it.
Lastly, I was also hoping to find a script that would add the functionality of Runic. That'd be perfect for her.
So, possible winners...
Mix
Runic
Recall
Any other suggestions?

There's always Dualcast...
Thought about it, but one of her Limit Breaks gives her an extra turn, so I figured it'd seem redundant. Dualcast isn't outside the realm of possibility, though. If I can't decide on something, it's a candidate.
author=WCouillardThat's not redundancy, that's synergy. You'd be able to stack them and get three or even four turns at once. There's FF5/FF9 spellblade. It enchanted attacks with a magic spell, so that every normal attack also casts that spell in addition to the physical damage. FF9 only did it for damage spells, but FF5 let you use status spells with it too.
There's Image, from FF5. Creates a decoy that takes a hit for you. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for it to also cast spells, either mirroring your actions or uncontrollably. Was originally a ninja skill in FF5, but the theme of duality fits a red mage too.
There's Twincast, from FF4. You'd need a second character. Maybe let it work with any other character? Maybe give her both Image and Twincast, so she can split in half and then twincast with herself?
You could do FF11 spellchains, but you'll need someone other than me to describe how they work.
Dualcast could work as a kind of Magic Mix, letting you combine two spells into a different one. Fire + Ice = Antipode. Unfortunately, once you get past how cool Antipode is, you realize there aren't really any other combinations in FF source material to draw from.
Haha, good suggestion. I already decided on her Command Ability and went over it on a differnt blog, though. She uses Treatment, which works much the same way it always has. Free status healing, but it can't heal every negative status.
I like the Magic Mixing, though...
It'd work awesomely with Oil + Fire, or Zombie + Fire. =P
