She's babein' as hell, but I gotta wonder why a ranger would choose to wear baggy assless chaps to go monster slaying in...? Her costume doesn't look especially functional.

She comes from an area where there are a lot of wild chocobos. 'Equestrian' was one of the key words I used when I was designing her.

Functionality is also never at the top of my list when designing (as is the case with many designers), but it is on the list. It seems a lot of people are often split between a greater focus on functionality and aesthetics. I'm in the latter camp. There's no inherent right or wrong to it... It's just a matter of preference.

Unless the setting is heavily grounded in reality, functionality is usually pretty low on my priority list. A lot of the Final Fantasy universe costumes would have to be reexamined if we subjected them to real world setting scrutiny.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks! :)
I think black hair looks great with dark green and gold.
I'm going to be a little blunt here.

This is my least favorite of your normally awesome, perfectly personality fitting designs. The outfit looks like... I dunno, but not anything a Ranger or Hunter would be wearing, especially one who would be totally outdoorsy the way this character is.

Everything about it says military. I'm not a fan of this one. But whether we decide to use it or not, keep it for the art unlocks! :)
We don't have many armored females. How about a light leather armor or breastplate?
Something inspired by the FFXI or XIV archers I think would be a nice alternative.

Why is she showing off her bra?
I just find it sort of suspect when the "aesthetic" for your character designs tend to be interesting for the male characters, but revealing and highly sexualized for the female characters. It's... well it leaves a lot to be desired, I'll leave it at that.

As for functionality and aesthetics: you can actually blend the two quite nicely. I find that a costume that is super "woah" yanks me right out of any suspension of disbelief I had going on, you know? But a well designed, interesting to look at costume is totally possible. Maybe try looking at outfits worn by horse jockeys and the like, then start blending in cultural influence or w/e. I'm not really a MASTER OF DESIGN~ so I can't really offer anything more concrete than that atm, but hey, it might be worth thinking about!

Or not. I mean, I am a stranger on the internet, so if you want to take my free advice and throw it out the window, that is super legit!

@emmych

Nah, you're right in the sense that it can be construed as 'suspect'. That's simply because my artistic aesthetic does revolve around certain eastern media tropes that generally place a lot of emphasis on sexualization. There isn't any agenda behind this decision. It stems back to the origins of my artistic history: drawing anime and mimicking artwork from Japan, Korean and Taiwan. However, whether my male designs are interesting and my female designs are boring (because of the sexualization) is a matter of opinion.

I've spent a good number of years doing lineart commissions for eastern based customers and companies and not surprisingly, my style has grown to reflect the tastes of that clientele. Aesthetics that are common in games like Lineage 2, Aion, Agarest War, Langrisser or any typical eastern CCG is the kind of style that my commissioners wanted. This is simply where my style has ended up after years of working in that particular market.

As far as how people may react to it? I make it a rule to ignore that facet entirely. There is no intent to offend, nor is there any hidden meaning or message that I am trying to promote. It's all subjective (and often polarizing) so I pay very little attention to it. Yuri, yaoi, ecchi... I've drawn it all so there really isn't much I consider taboo when it comes to art. It's just a matter of ensuring you create the appropriate subject matter for the (hopefully) appropriate audience.

This leads back to an earlier post of mine where I discussed how I never extrapolate anything from a piece of artwork that falls outside the scope of the technique and the style. Functionality, history and my own beliefs and principles are left out entirely. What I look at (and judge) is color coordination, technique, the 2d mise en scène, line pressure, line width, etc.

With that being said, I appreciate your advice and input. I actually use real world references quite often in fact. I regularly use Vogue and GQ as sources of inspiration, hah. Real world influences will become much more apparent when we start posting previews of new parallax maps (a lot of people forget how fantastic some of Earth's locales can be!).

I also have a bad habit of getting sidetracked when I'm designing. I'll start a design using a few keywords and then each additional piece opens up a new tangent of artistic influences. Literally, this is how my design process went:

Subject: Priscilla
Keywords/Definitives: Equestrian, Older/Mature, Archer, Green Garment (for cast diversity), Black Hair (for cast diversity), Short Jacket (too many long flowing backsides in the cast)

Equestrian --> (googled equestrian)
----> Cossack -----> (old cossacks too dated in appearance)
----> modern Cossack (military hat + pants)

And then what ends up happening? A design that ends up being far removed from the base character type that William had originally devised. Hah, oh well. I can't get it right on the first try everytime.

@William

Yeah, I get what you're saying. She needs some work. I'll have to go back to the drawing board on this one.

@Avee

You know, I had the same idea a while back. I spent a few days looking at pictures of rpg archers and rangers and nothing really clicked with me. That's why I decided to try something new and I went with 'equestrian' as my main focus over 'bow user'. She DOES need some armor though for diversity's sake. Her black hair and green and gold motif will definitely stay though. :)

@Sailerius

She adheres to the Sue Ellen Mischke School of Fashion. :(

I'm right on top of that, Rose.

Oh, this one's much better IMO! Looks definitely more what a Ranger-type character would wear.
THERE she is! Nice man. Love this design (I hope you kept the old one for in-game unlocks!).

You're magical to me.

Much nicer ^_^
Man, she looks like she escaped from Guild Wars 2.
Ok, now I've two favourite characters <333.
Love the new redesign. But Leon's is still my favourite. ^^

I liked the first one and I like this one too! Very nice work
Aaaaah, this is amazing! I really like this version. She still looks super cool and pretty and babein', but also like she could kick the heck outta monsters. >w>

Great job! <3

You're right, needs more skin. I demand bras that are a couple of sizes too small (for that overflowing butt crack cleavage that makes all the boys go "woooooo") and thongs yanked up to the ribcage. Better yet, skip tight undergarments altogether and just go straight for historically accurate berserker women (no clothes, just a pelt over the head).

Why have you chosen to get yourself stuck in this design philosophy instead of embracing versatility? There's really no other explanation as it's as simple as just making like garments for the female characters as you do the male. There shouldn't be a difference. War knows no gender.

Another thing that I've found with this game over the years - and others where the designer clearly misses the point - is that there's this synonymous quality between "strong" and "exposed". "She gives everyone a show because she knows she can kick serious ass." Ability comes through discipline. Discipline comes through humility.

At no point did I suggest any of what you're assuming in this ridiculous post. In reality, I was protesting the original concept. Not to mention, I have no input whatsoever on the design of the characters in the concept stage, Paul is more than capable of handling it himself. I see these designs at the same time as the rest of you, and I give my opinion just like everyone else does, after the fact. At that point, if things need to change, they do. Priscilla is the third character whose design has changed after their initial concept was shown.

I'm not sure, by putting words in my mouth, what your point is here.
