Lots of little things!

Ahoy there!

So I may change the game over to VX Ace, mainly due to a problem with my VX where it lags for a little while before a testplay can begin (very annoying over time). But I also want it for its databasing options, better scripts and script functioning, how it compresses the game when it's done, and I may possibly use the extra tilesets despite the parallaxing I'm currently working on.

Speaking of, you may have noticed this sudden change in style in the last month from this:

Urrghh, washed out colours and awful tiles!

To this:

We're getting there. Slowly.

As you can tell, the second one is definitely a lot nicer but I'm working on those roofs. Still, anything's an improvement from before. A lot of the grassland will be filled out with crates and other what-have-yous soon, I just wanted to get the base buildings and trees down first.

Moving on, I got a suggestion from Galv to call the sequel "The Only Two Left" and.. it's growing on me, actually! I could work it to fit with Stann and Gillum being perceived as the only ones left, so I think I may change it. It means that every time I make a new title I won't go "Ah, there! The Only One Left! That's a good looking title logo! Oh F*%@, I forgot the 2.."

In others newses, I've changed the character art style again, again again.. again. Please don't hate me.. I'm actually trying to get something I feel comfortable drawing things similar to, so it's a lot harder than it sounds. I'm not sure I'll even use this style, something feels weird about it. But I do need your help regardless of whether it's used or not. I need to know which nose you prefer:

Nose A -

Nose B -

Also, if you've any suggestions for how to make them less suck, that'd be grand. I'd really rather not keep changing art styles because that's taking up a lot of time at the minute. I'm still settling in my new house and other real life things going on which kinda stops me from doing much to the game itself, but it'd be nice to get comfortable with an art style to begin with.

That's pretty much it. If I think of anything else that's going on in the near future, I guess I'll post it below instead of making a new blog. Unless it's huge news or something.. which I doubt.

Improving on your work constantly is the path to an awesome game!

As for your art... it's awesome. You got skillz! They definitely don't suck.
I prefer nose b myself. The only thing that stands out to me is the guy on the right - his head looks too big. Perhaps it's a mix of his shoulder and arm being a bit too skinny and his neck goes from skinny at the bottom to really wide at the top, too.

Just my observations, though. I love the style and colouring is awesome.

I do respect a game with a lot more custom additions to it. Well done, keep it up :)

Thanks Galv! ^^

I'll try giving him a bigger nose/eyes and arm and see if that helps the proportions any.

I think I went wrong because I didn't want them to be huge, fat, muscly people because they're not exactly well off for money so.. I wanted them to look run down or unwell, but I guess I went for "deformed" more than anything else! XD Will definitely get onto those proportions though. Thanks for the feedback and advice!

Did a bit of updating, made his shoulders and arms ever so slightly bigger, but I most importantly shrunk his head.

I'm liking that much better! But I think maybe the neck is still a too wide at the top (where it meets his head).
I think compare it against Dr. Cool-beard and you'll see what I mean :)

Third time's a charm, so they say! I see what you mean, his neck is a bit uhh.. "beefcake" is the only word that comes to mind. I've slimmed it down a lot and it fits in so much better with the rest of his proportions now!

That's it! Third time was the charm :D
Very nice work
Nose A seems much more pointy than B. I think that's the main difference, leaving apart the difference in styles.

Thanks Galv, you've been a real big help! :D

Oro, manga noses tend to be very very pointy indeed! But I thought that much black outlining in nose A really takes up the main attention of the face, whereas B is a lot more subtle. I suppose it really is just a preference thing.

Thanks Clareain! ^^

Made another picture today, but something seems really off. I think it might be her face shape/sizes?

It looks ok, but the head's too big and the arms, the left (on the right) muuuch too small.

I was trying to give the impression that her arm was slightly more behind her back, but I'll try making that bigger and her head smaller. (What is it with me and drawing giant heads? XD)

EDIT: Hopefully a slight improvement!

Another good one! I think with this one, what stands out to me is her left arm still (on the right).
I think the shoulder starts too far away from her torso. Her sleeve (or... whatever you call the part of a shirt where a sleeve would start... haha) is bigger on her left side (the right on the picture) which seems like it would cover the shoulder more than her right (picture left).

Other than that, I reckon the rest is great!

P.S. Am I the only one that I confused with lefts and rights? I don't even know which is which anymore...

We'll go for third time's a charm again, but I can see there's still something wrong with it!

I used to get confused with left and right, but I somehow kicked that habit and started getting confused with east and west instead.. which is actually worse. It doesn't matter, I knew what you meant. :P Just don't ask me for directions.

It looks left to me! I mean right... correct. It looks correct to me haha.

I also approve of the other modifications such as extra hair on the right. (I swear, I'm not going to say 'left' or 'right' for a week...) I think it definitely adds balance to the image. Nice work! :)

Also, I'm in the "don't ask for directions" club, too. heh

Thanks for your help, guys! It really helps me to see what's wrong with the image! (Don't worry about being too harsh, I really don't mind it if it helps me.)

I made a few changes to her sleeve-thingies (what ARE those called?!) and gave her an extra piece of hair to balance her head a bit better, so I'm glad you noticed!

And yeah, I'm gonna stop saying left or right. I'll just point at what I want in future!
Pointing might make this process even harder online :P

Love what you're doing, can't wait to see more

Lol, I would agree with you on improvement slowing things down but it's definitely worth it. I'd rather release this game slowly but make it look nicer than rush it all out now. That's not to say I won't release demos at the very least, because I'd still like to keep people interested. ^^ We'll see how this goes, but I'm *hoping* to keep these current faces and leave them as they are with perhaps very minor changes in future so that I can actually get on with the meat of gameplay in the near future.
I'm glad to hear that. Quality over quanti...err, speed. That's the saying, right?
